Dr. Asma Faiz is Associate Professor of Political Science at the Mushtaq Ahmed Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences. She did her Ph.D. in Political Science from Sciences Po, Paris (2017) and M.Sc. in Political Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2011). Dr. Faiz’s research focuses on ethnic nationalism, populism, ethnic parties and federalism. She is the author of the book In Search of Lost Glory: Sindhi Nationalism in Pakistan (Hurst Publishers, 2021). Dr. Faiz also edited a volume Making Federation Work: Federalism in Pakistan After the 18th Amendment (2015). Dr. Faiz is recipient of several fellowships including the Fulbright fellowship, Campus France Fellowship and the Rangoonwalla fellowship. Dr. Faiz also worked with international think tanks such as Forum of Federations and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

I am as a south Indian Tamilian feel that most of Pakistani intellectuals knowledge of post independent India is woefully wrong because their source of information is biased (either western media or official Pakistani narrative)I strongly advice that they confine their discussion to Pakistan matters.
that is an accurate statement . most guests have a nuanced view of indian matters which reflects low ground level knowledge.

she is wrong with language arguments from an Indian point of view I am South Indian let me tell you what happened here after independence.
1. Constituency Assembly discussed the language issue and decided to include Hindi and English as official language with English for only 15 year.
2. After prolonged protest from across the country the central government was forced to create states on language basis.
3. Now after 15 years central government (congress govt) decided to remove the English from the official status as stated in constitution but there was again huge protest across non Hindi speaking states particularly in Tamil Nadu then Govt was forced to accept the English as official language forever and made amendment in constitution.
4. 3-Language formula was not created in 1947 it was suggested later which is optional and not all states follow this.
We Indians have different languages and protected because we resist and fought for our rights nobody(congress ,bjp or central govt) gave us anything .
I hope you get your facts correct that to when you are working in language and ethnic identity.

The nation state concept in the sub-continent is not even a century old. Feelings of Sindhi nationalism make more sense for everyone who's a Sindhi, since that identity is millennia-old.

Well, you say that in terms of economy, they(BJP) are better. Well, the economic indicators under the Manmohan Singh government were equal, if not better. Also, it was Manmohan Singh who opened India's economy in the 90s. Also, in India, there are many states(provinces) that don't have a BJP governments and are successful. So also in economic terms, things are not as clear with respect to BJP. Yes, in terms of their ideology, I agree with you. They are extremist.

It is always great to listen to subject matter experts like this guest flex their muscles on a topic like nationalism. Loved this discussion. Made me wiser about the ethnic groups in Pakistan and the approach of smaller states there as they fight the federal system for their rights but also to protect their cultural identities. India appears to be in a slightly better position with its states since they were originally formed on linguistic / cultural lines (and the 3 languages formula in education), but the rise of state parties here continues to underline the fact that at a state level, people still trust their own, homegrown political entities to fight their battles better than national parties.

Correction :Tell her Urdu Speakers were 3-3.5 % in pre-71 Pakistan [Both wings when Bengalis were with us] , with the parting of Bengalis in 71 , this % is now 7.5% , I don't know from where she got this 9% thing

In India 3 language formula didn't apply to most of the North Indian states. Their local languages were undermined and were made to believe that their languages were just dialects of Hindi and not independent langauge. This also ensured that Hindi's number count far outstrips other languages. Which in turn became the argument for Hindi getting tested as the defacto national langauge. This project has by and large succeeded. Having said that, many other languages were saved by the 3 language formula. And the Indian state seems to be fine with that. They want Hindi to have a special place but doesn't mind other languages to thrive "regionally". And now in this era of consumerism, internet and AI all these major surving langauges have great chance of not only surviving but thriving.
Another excellent podcast, really appreciate her insights. The arrogance and hubris of the establishment is going to be the ruin of us all.

It is so easy to blame everything on "Angrez" even when it comes to things like hating people based on language. Just admit that you people hated anything that was associated with Hindus or Sikhs. Hypocrites.
Well interesting is that before partition in Punjab there was a census (think 1941) people where asked to declare their first language. Muslims wrote Urdu, Hindus wrote Hindi only Sikhs wrote Punjabi. So only Sikhs really owned it although ALL three spoke it at home. So the politics of this right upto now can be seen in Pakistan but also in India!

Have you ever considered doing a podcast on how Sindhis who had fled to India fared? They are now a people without land, cut off from their heritage and spread all over India.
Overall Sindhis in India have thrived as business men and professionals even though the spread and retention of Sindhi language has been unsuccessful. Not enough has been done to promote Sindhi in spite of being in 13 th schedule. This has been partially due to elitist attitude of many Sindhis..emphasis on Devanagari has damaged Sindhi profoundly…

Sindhis and Punjabis have been neighbors since long before Pashtuns and Balochis were created in a lab. There are no recorded wars between the two. Has anyone wondered why Sindh went downhill after 18th amendment? It was only when Balochis started calling themselves Sindhis and usurped Sindh's resources when issues escalated. The lowest point in their relations was the Indian Punjabi Zia ul Haq's fascism against Bhutto that helped Baloch dacoits make inroads into Sindh by lending a shoulder and then pulling the cord.
Madam Asma is a treat to hear , articulate and academically sound ! Pleasantries from India ! I wish we also heard our academics more! This is where public policy should start everywhere.
Few centuries back linguistic identity was not as important as it is today. In fact across the subcontinent every region was perforated with multiple ethinic, linguistic, caste, religious groups. I feel for people of that time the main identity was the family kinship. Linguistic nationalism is used to legitimise economic and political units , just like religious nationalism.

12:19 It's true, language issue is extremely important & often people from ruling community either ignore or don't understand its importance. It's not just a means of communication.
15:11 3 language formula was & still is a fraud against non hindi Indians. It imposed hindi as a compulsory languag for the non hindi Indians while giving hindi people a choice to learn a 3rd language of their choice. While many non hindi Indians started learning hindi as a compulsory 3rd language most hindi people continued with only 2 language policy & some adopted Sanskrut as 3rd language which non hindi Indians couldn't within the 3 language formula, so if non hindi Indians want to learn a language of their choice like Sanskrut it'd have to be their 4th language increasing the academic burden unnecessarily.
15:59 Ruling elites in India did try to impose hindi as national language but luckily the backlash was big enough that they couldn't get it done. Also, unlike in pakistan the Indian language movement saw limited police action as Indian military wasn't ruling the country nor was comfortable with taking action against civilians.

27:48 I find the mohajir i.e. the refugee to be the most absurd ethnic identity. They should probably be recognised as urdu ethnicity, I think they're the only ones who speak urdu as their mother tongue or L1 even if their ancestors weren't urdu themselves.

You need the ethnic parties to exist to avoid the existence of ethnic militant organisations & Sri Lanka is a perfect example who marginalised Tamil parties so much that LTTE became the primary representative of Tamils there.

The truth is no Indian or Pakistani will ever understand what 1971, rather 1965 to 71 was like. Yes I am one of the black, 'effeminate' Bengalis whose Grandfather fought as a Muktibahini fighter but you guys won't understand what the feeling is witnessing the extermination of your people. Add to that we are Hindu, so I don't think even I fully understand that sense of hopelessness and desperation as they fought for basic survival against a highly well resourced and well supplied mechanised fighting force. Rapes at an industrial level, dehumanisation, people dragged out and executed on major freeways, the casual racism even today. Being always in a position of power, that is not something you or anyone speaking so casually about Bengal understands.
I don't know why Pakistani people particularly so call educated are prejudiced about india regarding atrocities against minorities with citing any example. They don't talk of atrocities against Hindu community in Pakistan.
We don't have 20 to 30 mass riot's against minorities in our country as compare to India

@@najmarani9493 In india you have to choose an extra language to learn as it is more a state language in private school and government schooll and it depends in which state you live. As i live in delhi, and there is no common language so we have urdu and sanskrit both in most of school as an extra language.

Just want to add an opinion of your question 20:27 Punjabi nationalism become invisible because of being a super power state within Pakistan, the nations which get power and grow rich in economy the issue of language, religion and ethnicity become minor for them. They are in the feeling of greatness.

Punjabi is growing and becoming stronger in Pakistan. Punjabi music, sufi poetry, idioms and movies are popular in all other provinces too. All the kids even in Punjab big cities speak Punjabi, even those of non punjabi family. Are punjabi youth multilingual ? Yes and good for them! Of course Urdu is the lingua franca in all parts of Pakistan and Punjabis do business and work all over so they make sure all punjabis speak urdu. Plus Iqbal and Faiz have made Urdu a language owned by Punjab.
Even the Sikh Guru sahiban chose urdu type bhasha for the major parts of Guru Granth sahib instead of Punjabi because they wanted everyone in North India to understand their universal message. So they chose urdu type bhasha which was, is, and will always be common lingua franca of South Asians everywhere. Punjabi in Pakistan is stronger than in India and expanding its reach and growth.
The risk to Punjabi is in India from Modi, RSS, and traitors to Punjab and Golden Temple like Gen. Brar and murderer of Punjabi youth KPS Gill.

Well, a big part of the Sindhis that migrated to India were from the business community. Also, when one looks at the Sindhi Hindus, who remained back like in the Thar region, were from the peasant community. Btw also true the other way round, many people who migrated from UP to Karachi, Sindh were from the Indian Civil Services or on average (of course not all) were from a more educated background. So context matters a lot..

PPP is in no way a Sindhi Nationalist party . They are anti Sindh in every manner . They have destroyed Sindh from Karachi to Kashmore . They only use Sindh as a card when their power is in threat .

Nice discussion but one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb. Lady said people have to step out of Lahore and Islamabad to understand issues better, but when commenting on India, her statements are as sweeping, broad brushed and prejudiced as any guy roaming the streets, absolutely devoid of nuance.
Despite the education background of the guest, she made some factual errors regarding language in India. Only reason, I writing this is, hopefully, that might help those who are seeking some solution to the issue that they think are facing and also to set the record straight.
First of all, it's being made out as a huge language problem exists in India and it's all because of current ruling party, both of are incorrect. In fact today, in the opposition party (INDIA alliance) alliance meeting, DMK member (from Tamil Nadu) said he did not understand Hindi, for which leader from his alliance party Nitish Kumar (CM of Bihar) lost his cool, expressing his displeasure of someone not able to understand Hindi. Such incidents occur sometimes in same party or alliance. but it's a minor irritation and sometimes politics behind it.
1) Pre-independence, Gandhi, Patel, even southern leaders like Rajaji (Rajagopalachari) felt Hindi be encouraged and could emerge as uniting factor.
2) However, in 1950s, Potti Sri Ramulu fought for a separate Telugu speaking state, which by the way was opposed by Nehru, Rajaji and also RSS on right. anyway, states were organized along language. that's how Gujarat for Gujarati, Tamil Nadu for Tamils, Andhra for Telugu etc.
3) In 1960s, central congress government's policies led to Anti-Hindi agitation in Tamil Nadu, (which was also exploited politically regional party) and finally Congress loosing power in 1967 over language issue. all because of 3 language formula. today, situation is different as economic opportunities and other factors are making people gain some working knowledge of Hindi
4) In other states like Karnataka or Kerala etc, people study some third language like Hindi.

Finally, I used to think, there was a possibility of united India and it might have had a bright future. PM modi is himself always start his speech from the relional language, it might be tamil, bengali, Bhijpuri etc. Likewise he also prerfer to where cultural cloths. Sindh is the land all along the banks of River Indus and its tributaries، right from Kashmir to its Delta.
Not only present Pujab and KPK are parts of it, but Punjabi, Sraiki, Hindko, Kashmiri... are dialects of Sindhi Language like Thari, Kachhi, Lari, Lassi..
Whereas Pashto and Baluchi are alien outsiders belong to invaders and land grabbers.

Bcz they migrated from one city of Punjab to another City of Pakistani punjab. They all are Punjabi ethnically, they don't belong to any other ethnic group whereas Muhajirs of Sindh Belong to various ethnicities historically but now they all call themselves Urdu.

Well it is true that India recognised many languages which is a good thing. But the REAL! question is how vibrant a language remains. I mean, how many NEW books, new music, TV, News etc.. is done in Sindhi in India. I'm not saying it is zero in India. But the number of Sindhi TV channels, news, music, and literature are on a much bigger scale in Pakistan than in India.
@@user-rh5jp2sh4s yes after urdu literature sindhi literature is prominent in Pakistan. In Pakistan newspapers are written in two languages Urdu and Sindhi. We have a lot of Sindhi news, TV channels. After urdu dramas, books and literature Sindhi literature, poetry and content is the big thing. So sindhi still remains a big culture in Pakistan and obviously Sindhis in Pakistan are in a better and bigger place in terms of culture, language, identity and historical knowledge than Indian Sindhis. Indian Sindhis cannot read old and great sindhi literature which is written in Arabic writing script because indian sindhis were forced to write sindhi in devnagri writing script which killed the cultural and literary values in indian Sindhis. Also indian Sindhi's are trying to teach their kids Sindhi because sindhi is no longer important for sindhi indian youth. While indian sindhis community is in far better financial state than Pakistani Sindhi's.

Well, as said, the economic state of people depends a lot on their background. Sindhis living in India belong more to the business community. They are somewhat / a bit like the Memon/Gujrati or Ismaili community in Karachi
Btw just for information, there are also newspapers etc.. in Pashto, also it is there at a primary school level. But all not to the extent as it could be..
