The Bhartiya concept of Rashtra could be considered a parallel to the western term ‘Nation’ but both are also different on several counts. Indians are not falling into the same trap, Mr. host. They have been forced to react, so as to check certain undesirable tendencies. Whatever seems to be happening in India is not the same, what Pakistan has been doing for decades. This "hindutva" being criticised here is not the same as muslims have been doing forever. Hindutva is a counter-measure to halt certain undesirable changes/developments in India. I'm not sure why, but Mr. Hoodbhoy has changed his usual approach from discussing scientific exploration to more intense and controversial subjects, one possibly because they attract attention. Plus he's talking in a fashion archetypal of Pakistanis(Hypocritical Pro Max). Also he's taking a much stronger stance on these topics, as if he feels pressured to address these personally. I don't know if he's trying to show different viewpoints or maybe trying to make certain people happy, possibly to support the educational spread of his black-hole project and keep Pakistani students and “Jaahil-awaam” informed about something at least.

While a traditional Hindu (really a traditional Indian regardless of religion - caste exists in all of India's religious communities) might be casteist, Hindutva proponents have pretty much uniformly been in favour of caste annihilation. Read about Savarkar's opinions on caste for example - the Seven Shackles of Hindu Society. Hindutva advocates have understood for over a century now that caste only serves to divide Hindus and undermine a common Hindu identity. Abolishing caste and viewing all Hindus as a single community is really key to Hindutva. I mean look at the BJP leadership - are they all upper caste? Haven't they nominated an adivasi president? Didn't they receive very high tribal support during the recent Chhattisgarh election?

I grew up in a Hindu family in South India in the 70s and 80s. I am very secular in my outlook; I believe that good and bad people are in every religion. I am also a non-violent/gentle atheist. Had a couple of Muslim classmates growing up. Can't remember any animosity as "Hindu Muslim bhai bhai" was the popular sentiment at the time. Modi didn't have much effect on me, IMO. OTOH, Pakistan probably did, by design. Pakistan's strategic warfare to rip apart the tenuous social fabric of India involved recruiting Indian Muslims to blow up random places in the country in 90s and 00s. Just like the US radicalized and used Afghanis to fight its wars, Pakistan radicalized, trained, and funded Indian Muslims to attack the societies in which they live. This form of terrorism didn't kill 1000s - it didn't need to. Just the loss of a few hundred innocent lives created a situation where even very meek, very soft Indians (Hindus and others) started distancing themselves from fellow Indian Muslims in their personal lives. This probably made Muslims feel a bit under siege and withdraw even more. Is this fair to the vast majority of Indian Muslims who are peaceful and want to lead normal lives? No. Definitely not. Modi is a bit like Trump in greenlighting discrimination, but he didn't start the fire. He is just happy to supply the fuel because it guarantees his political success. I'm not sure why, but Mr. Hoodbhoy has changed his usual approach from discussing scientific exploration to more intense and controversial subjects, one possibly because they attract attention. Plus he's talking in a fashion archetypal of Pakistanis(Hypocritical Pro Max). Also he's taking a much stronger stance on these topics, as if he feels pressured to address these personally. I don't know if he's trying to show different viewpoints or maybe trying to make certain people happy, possibly to support the educational spread of his black-hole project and keep Pakistani students and “Jaahil-awaam” informed about something at least.

I respect your opinion, but I have to disagree with the "hindu extremist would be casteist" idea. While a traditional Hindu (really a traditional Indian regardless of religion - caste exists in all of India's religious communities) might be casteist, Hindutva proponents have pretty much uniformly been in favour of caste annihilation. Read about Savarkar's opinions on caste for example - the Seven Shackles of Hindu Society.
Hindutva advocates have understood for over a century now that caste only serves to divide Hindus and undermine a common Hindu identity. Abolishing caste and viewing all Hindus as a single community is really key to Hindutva. I mean look at the BJP leadership - are they all upper caste? Haven't they nominated an adivasi president? Didn't they receive very high tribal support during the recent Chhattisgarh election?
The BJP and RSS from the beginning was anti-caste, and still is (I'm not part of either, but have looked into their ideology) . Can't stand so called secular Hindus that don't have the guts to critique Islam and how horrible it has been for the entire world, including India.

I grew up in a Hindu family in South India in the 70s and 80s. I am very secular in my outlook; I believe that good and bad people are in every religion. I am also a non-violent/gentle atheist. Had a couple of Muslim classmates growing up. Can't remember any animosity as "Hindu Muslim bhai bhai" was the popular sentiment at the time.
Modi didn't have much effect on me, IMO. OTOH, Pakistan probably did, by design. Pakistan's strategic warfare to rip apart the tenuous social fabric of India involved recruiting Indian Muslims to blow up random places in the country in 90s and 00s. Just like the US radicalized and used Afghanis to fight its wars, Pakistan radicalized, trained, and funded Indian Muslims to attack the societies in which they live. This form of terrorism didn't kill 1000s - it didn't need to. Just the loss of a few hundred innocent lives created a situation where even very meek, very soft Indians (Hindus and others) started distancing themselves from fellow Indian Muslims in their personal lives. This probably made Muslims feel a bit under siege and withdraw even more. Is this fair to the vast majority of Indian Muslims who are peaceful and want to lead normal lives? No. Definitely not.
Modi is a bit like Trump in greenlighting discrimination, but he didn't start the fire. He is just happy to supply the fuel because it guarantees his political success. It is interesting that from a Pakistani perspective, Modi is just carrying out the strategic plan they made a few decades ago but he is solidifying the majority against the minority, which was not the case earlier. Even ISI couldn't have predicted this trajectory when they were happily getting Indians to blow up other Indians.
