India (Republic of India) didn't exist before 1947. Italy didn't exist before 1860. Turkey didn't exist before 1922, Germany didn't exist before 1871, Saudi Arabia didn't exist before 1932 and so on. Concept of Countries was invented in Europe in the 18th century. Before the invention of the concept of countries, there were only empires and kingdoms everywhere around world. Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Denmark, Poland, Switzerland, Slovenia, Netherlands, lechesiten etc were created after fall of Holy Roman empire and subsequent kingdoms in Europe.
After the fall of the Ottomans empire in 1922, many countries were created based on their nationalities.Saudi Arabia didn't exist When Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca.Turkey was created in 1923 and Saudi Arabia was created in 1932 after the fall of Ottomans Empire in 1922. Europe and Middle East was united under various empires and kingdoms for most of the history just like India. India was the name for the region east to river Indus. It was never a country before 1947 but a region or subcontinent where various empires and kingdoms existed just like in Europe, Middle East or other parts and continents of world.
Now the question is what is nation and nationality? A nation is a society that shares a common language, culture, and history and has shared interests. For example English, German, Italian, Turkish, French, Russian, Dutch, Spanish, Arabs, Persian, Kurds, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, kashmiri, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Malyalam, Thai etc are nations and a country based on single nation or nationality or where a single nationality dominates culturally, politically, in economy and military is called a nation state. Most countries in Europe or 'civilised world' are based on single nationalities and are nation states or simply called nations.
There are dozens of nations within India and Pakistan. And hence India and Pakistan are union of nations or multinational countries. Nations are Punjab, Kashmir, sindh, Baluchistan, Gujarat, Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu etc. And in modern civilised world countries are created on basis of nationality like the countries in Europe (England, France, Germany, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Croatia etc) or in Asia (Korea, Japan, China,Thailand, Philippines etc) and Bangladesh etc are countries based on nationalities.
Among the 650 major nations in the world, the nations in the union of India are one of the largest nations in the world. After Han Chinese Mandrain, Spanish, Anglo Saxons English, and Arabic
      Bengali - world's 5th largest nationality
Punjabi- 10th largest nationality in world
Marathi- 13th largest nationality in world
      Hindustani- 14th largest
      Telugu- 15th largest nationality
Tamil- 17th largest nationality in world
Gujarati- 24th largest nationality in world
      Bhojpuri- 25th largest
      Kannada- 29thth largest
      Malyalam- 30th largest
      Oriya- 32nd largest
      Maithili- 40th largest
      Awadhi- 46th largest
      Assamese- 65th largest
Haryanvi, Marwari, Magahi, Deccan, etc in top 100 nationalities of world.
(Hindi, Urdu are not nationalities but artificial languages developed from Hindustani language and imposed on some nations in some regions, with only few native speakers. These regions have their own nationalities and languages. Hindustani is a nationality in western Uttar pradesh with Hindustani as native language).
Republic of India was created in 1947 out of the British Indian empire on the basis of two nations bogus theory. Two nations were assumed as Islam and hindusim. But in reality, Islam and Hinduism are not nations. India and Pakistan were not created based on nationalities but on two nation (Islam Hinduism) bogus theory. Hence, these countries are based on religions. On the other hand, Bangladesh is a nation state which was created on the basis of Bangla nationality in 1971 (5th biggest nationality in world). British empire changed ownership rights in 1947
Three predominant civilisations in Republic of India, Indo Aryans, Dravidian and Sino Tibetic ( North East nations in the Republic of India) don't share anything although the first two civilisations share religion hence religion is the biggest binding force of the country followed by Military Power which is used to occupy non Hindu nations (Punjab, Kashmir, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya) with the country. Most of Hindus in Indian subcontinent prefer religion over their nationalities unlike muslims (Kashmiri, Bangla, Baluch, Sindhi, Pashto) who identify themselves with their nationalities and even support nation states like Bangladesh.
According to research, Higher ethnic or national diversity within a country negatively affects economic growth through conflict between interests of various nations or ethnicities (Don't confuse the ethnic or national diversity with the multiculturalism in west due to migration, the migrants mix with diverse society and become part of nationality of the host country and work for the interests of the dominant nationality).
High 'nationality or ethnic' Diversity correlates with low GDP per capita.
Strong democracy correlates with ethnic or national homogeneity.
Punjab and Kashmir should be a free countries based on Punjabi and Kashmiri nationalities like Bangladesh. But Hindu Punjabis, Hindu Kashmiris and Muslim Punjabi don't want to leave unions of india and Pakistan, so Punjabi Sikhs, or Kashmiri muslims can't force them to follow to support the idea of Nation-States. Hindu Punjabis, who had deserted Punjabi language in 1951 and 1961 census by declaring Hindi as their mother tongue would never support a Punjabi nation state. They support a Indian state based on the Hindu religion. Similarly, Punjabi Muslims of Pakistan dont support Punjabi nation state either. They support Pakistan state that is based on Islam religion.
Similarly, Bengali Hindus and Kashmiri Hindus don't support Bangla nation state Bangladesh and Azad Kashmir and want to live in India which is based on Hinduism. So Punjabi muslims, Punjabi Hindus, Kashmiri Hindus and Bengali Hindus are free to stay in their respective countries based on religions. But similar to Bangla Muslims of East Pakistan, who created Bangla nation state Bangladesh without Indian Bengali Hindus, Sikhs have the right to create Azad Punjab (a Punjabi nation state) without Punjabi Hindus and Punjabi Muslims (and Azad Kashmir without Kashmiri Hindus). As simple as that.
We Punjabi Sikhs have no problem living in a Punjabi Muslims or Punjabi Hindu majority Punjabi nation state but non Sikh Punjabis don't support idea of nation-state unlike modern civilised world but a state based on religion.
The Punjabi speaker population of Muslims is around 10 crore. Punjabi speaking population of Hindus is around 3 crore (Punjabi Hindus in Punjab, Himchal, Haryana, Jammu and Delhi). Punjabi speaker Sikh population is around 2 crore. Hence Sikhs would be minority if both Punjabi muslims and Hindus or either one of them come form a Punjabi nation state with us Sikhs. We Sikhs have no problem living as minority in Punjabi nation state among majority Punjabi muslims and Punjabi Hindus, But their radicals minds prefer religion over their nationality and they love to give up their Punjabi nationality and adopt Hindi and Urdu nationality in order to create a state based on their respective religions.
So when Sikhs alone form a Punjabi nation state, it would automatically be a Sikh majority Punjabi nation state called Khalistan. What's in the name? We are open to change the name and keep it Punjab instead of Khalistan and also write the word secular state in constitution because it wouldn't change anything in practice. In practice it would still be Khalistan just like India is a Hindu rashtra in practice regardless of its official name or regardless of its constitution..

It's difficult to express how much emotion do Indians have for the land in Pakistan. Entire Pakistan is our heritage site! Keep in mind Pakistan and Pakistani are two different things. Pakistan will have a lot to gain by Indian tourism, just as countries like Nepal, Bhutan, SriLanka, Thailand... are virtually financed by Indian tourism.
For this Pakistanis have to b pragmatic and reconstruct the destroyed constructions as heritage sites. No one is asking them to change their religion but should stop their islamic rhetorism as lucidly explained by Salman Rashid ji in this video.
They should create an environment for tourism on the lines of Indonesia.

@@SatpalVerma000Go and make Khalistan. & stop spreading fake propaganda in the name of nation and national identity, if national identity has any thing to do with religion and language then America, China, Canada, and Russia would not be the successfull nations. You just want to discriminate between Hindus and Muslims and Sikhs. Because no one in Punjab speaks Hindi, they all speak Punjabi as it is State language of Punjab. And if Hinduism had any anything to do with national Identity then Nepal would have been a part of India. Or I think you are saying that Only Punjabi Hindus and Muslims Have a tendency to go towards India and Pakistan, and If this is the case then you just need a therapist, since you are building a very communal mind set which is looking good at this moment but after some time you will realise you mistake. And if language would have been a very true national Identity then there would not be any civil war in countries like Myanmar, Afghanistan, Yemen. And Countries like North and South Korea would not have existed. Countries like Indonesia also have multiple ethnicities and are doing good. Now, if earlier there was no concept of nationalism and only Empire existed ,then now why we see countries/Nations like UK, France and Portugal which do have their overseas territories with no concept of language imposition on their territories and also UK's full name had Kingdom in it and there are a number of countries with Kingdom or Empire on their name and they also have their national identities (dispite differences). And now Comming to your last point, do you know there is a territory of France in South America named french Guyana, now if that country in future became independent then what it would be called??

      Lahore was Muslim majority 64%.
But majority business owners were Hindus. Model Town was the most elite housing society at the time of partition and there was not a single Muslim land owner there. Majority Muslims were poor. That's why they started looting after the partition. Because they didn't have anything. Muslims of Indian Punjab suffered greatly due to the deads of Pakistani Punjabi Muslims. Who looted Hindus and killed Sikhs. Robbing them of everything what they had. As a result same thing was done to Muslims of Indian Punjab. Those who had nothing, got everything and those who had everything were robbed to nothing.

@@MohitGupta-pv2fdThank you for confirming the fact as Muslims Community of Lahore and around Lahore were filthy poor. Huge majority did not own much, majority were "kami kameen". But still why and how, in your case Lahore become part of Pakistan as it owned by minority non muslims back in days. So the reason was the majority of the population lived in this "tehsil" where Lahore was located were Muslims majority. The formula of division was not based on who owned what, the division formula was population of community on "tehsil" level, which community in majority lived in the tehsil. Otherwise if we take your argument true the entire old Delhi owned by Muslims as for your formula the dehli should be part of Pakistan. The whole "Gurgaon" now part of "new Delhi" once used to be owned by my grandparents should it be part of Pakistan?? Liaqat Ali Khan was owner of huge chunk of east Punjab. Nawab Patoodi owned huge part of Punjab 😅😅 so you better learn history and find out what was the formula of division that was implemented for division methodology that they agreed upon, although (Radcliffe of Mountbatten team) did not 100% implemented the formula as is, as many Muslim majority "tehsils" at the last moment got merged under pressure with India, i.e the region next to Kartarpur, Gurdaspur tehsil on the left bank of River Ravi was Muslim majority Tehsil at the last moment got managed to merge with India. If Master Tara Singh listened the voices, Punjab wouldn't have been divided at all. Back in days Sikh purbandh committee chairman (head) was Master Tara Singh who decided to merged the east punjab with India, and that happened, and the same Master Tara Singh after a year of freedom in 1948 raised slogan of independent Punjab in the Indian assembly. Upon that Mr. Nehru responded him ... Master Tara Singh it is too late now..

There can be no hope for these people who are the darkness themselves.
They forget that the women in their ancestral line were raped... men humiliated and these are indirectly products of this evil acts.. compounded with the eating of meat, cruelty to animals and people of other faiths, beastiality ... this community will get their due from Karma... their kids too will inherit this curse... add the illogical hatred fed into this horrible population... and the results of consangine marriages.. kids with horrific genetic defects...

"India" was a Western construct, no doubt, but the subcontinent always had many kingdoms and the concept of India as one country emerged much later. "Bharat" was some land in UP, and it was not used as term for the entire continent until India's independence. Most ancestry countries DO NOT consider all Indians to be of one DNA group.

Those patriot Muslim never left and are happy being Indians and following the constitution. But india do have Jaichands who are neither Hindus nor muslims and use religion as a weapon for the divide. The traitors who worked for the Britishers .Those who were intelligent never supported Britishers.
Pakistanis always supported the Britishers and indulged in cross border terrorism and land grabbing.POK is always a part of India. Pakistanis have thrown out every minority from their country. Temples in Pakistan are either closed or destroyed.

SIkhs were always state beneficiaries and reason behind British colonization of South Asia. Ranjeet and Nalwa shalwa took British help guns bombs, tel;escopes and soldiers to attack Uzbek and Hazara regions of Afghanistan. Afghanistan doesn't;t have only Pathans. Within 7 years Pathans got together and kicked ranjeet back to Lahore. Nalwa was beheaded in Jamrod. Go visit Kandhar museum. You can see the soldier's clothes who came with Ranjeet Singh. There are British pants and dhotis of Sikhs and all British artillery. If Sikhs were able to put nath on Pathans then why were they not able to defeat British? Afghans/ Pathans didn't let British rule them. Khyberpkhtunkhawa was given in treaty and was never under fully control of British. Pathans never stopped attacking British. On the other hand SIkhs fully serviced British for over 120 years and opened up heera mandi to supply women to British. One can see the results of who put nath to whom if you see the British built stuff in Punjab, KPK and Afghanistan. There are no British built English schools, factories, mills, dams, bridges, hospitals, legal system, railways, cinemas, printing press, RAW/ISI in AFghanistan. Kisi aur ko jaa ker bewaqoof banae

This podcast just popped up today on my mobile while surfing the net. Thoroughly enjoyed this session. Salute to Mr. Salman Rashid for being so candid and interesting. My maternal grandparents came from Lahore during partition. I remember my grandfather used to describe the beauty of Lahore. Though he lived in Delhi he would always tell us that there was no place as Lahore. Keep sharing such stories.

Punjab , Sindh, Baluchistan is the real India which history talk about.
The man who is highly intelligent, I really admire his honesty. Very learned and well informed, a man whose words come from experience and not some books or theorey. Clear thinker. To be admired for his truth and honesty.

He is very biased and seems to be a Punjabi nationalist. People like him weaken the roots of Pakistan, and make us all insecure. That's why he is to be avoided.

You are wrong about the present situation in India. We are simply standing up against extremism and terrorism. If that hurts a section of people for whom religion is more important than nation then maybe they chose the wrong side of the border in 1947

As an Hindustani , this might be the best podcast I have heard from a south Asian podcaster. Way better than any podcast in India. Also I completely agree that Indian RW is co-opting the hindutva Idea to gather votes. It will mess India up for the coming centuries. Hopefully this election will be better.
