The AK in Ready or Not

  • The majority of Western law enforcement agencies use some kind of 5.56x45 carbine as their service rifle - usually an AR15. However, AKs remain the most popular rifle across the world, and sees constant use in military conflicts around the world to this day. But how well do they perform as a law enforcement rifle?

One thing to be noted that's interesting is that the reasons why 7.62x39 is not as loved as much as a LEO/Mil round, are that the slow heavy bullet, and generally lower penetrating power are what have given it a new life as a very cheap robust hunting round in numerous platforms from civvie AKs to bolt actions, oh how times change.

Wrong. You’re just incorrect. The 7.62x39 has significantly more penetration than 556. This is verified in numerous tests even on TH-cam. The fact it’s so slow and heavy helps it not shatter apart on impact and allows the momentum to carry it through whatever it’s hitting.

    Super slick vid!
There are some other things that aren't touched upon in Ready or Not:
7.62x39 while very similar to .300 Blackout, might be a tad inferior and a lot of the surplus ammo aren't what you'd call precision shooters even out of an AR in 7.62x39, BUT they are cheap in bulk even with current day events. Helps that it has a huge number of companies producing the round due to its prevalence, compared to 5.45 which is harder to find.
The folding stock of certain models. The one depicted in game uses the left side folding stock with latch, a feature that isn't particularly mentioned but something that may come to use for real life. AKs don't have a buffer in the stock, which allows users to use it with the stock folded in a pinch. It's not particularly as accurate or consistent, though for shooting in a car, or needing to deploy it from storage or slung, it's a quick action. Or if you really have no time to deploy that stock, long as there's a round in the chamber, get it off safe and start blasting.
The manual of arms isn't as fast or intuitive vs an AR, but if you're wearing thick gloves, the big controls are easy to work with and its function is pretty easy to understand. This comes hand in hand with its use in colder environments, where you'd probably wanna stay warm whilst using it.
Nonetheless, while the AK has flaws, it was designed with the duty to be used in combat. Its long time service, huge array of aftermarket support that very few other weapons barring the AR15 can match and proven track record mean that it's gonna be around for a while.

Bigger bulkier projectile that can deliver more energy to the target whilst having less armor penetration than 5.56 (which might be a advantage as main goal of the law enforcement agencies are to arrest people alive rather than kill them) might be more helpful.
also the fact that 5.45x39 ,7.62x51 nato, 7.62x54r, 5.56x45 can not have a good subsonic loads ( the 5.45 subsonic loads were massive failure to the point where it couldn't leave the barrel of AK74 and was only able to be fired from AKS74U with alterations to it's gas system) Makes it even better for suppressing (also the subsonic 7.62x39 was what inspired 9x39)
lastly the fact that you only need 300mm of barrel to get the best out of the cartridge makes it a appealing option and hence you see the AK-103,4 or Bren 2 in 7.62x39 still being in service.

Also, 5.45x39 has superior wounding profile than 5.56x45, it's called poison bullet afterall.
It's one thing to design high velocity rifle round that can penetrate, but AK can also be made to shoot one that slightly slower than AR-15's rounds but basically "flipping wildly" when stuck in flesh.

Fun facts about the 7.62x39 round compared to the 5.56x45, due to the 7.62s fatter round with less powder it actually has a tendency to have less velocity meaning it will penetrate less than the 5.56, in a AK with a shorter barrel you could see how this would be seen as a better round to use compared to the 5.56 in many situations. 7.62 is also worse against armour since the round is bigger but with less powder since the projectile itself is heavier it also drops off quicker, the upside of this bigger round is that it makes it INCREDIBLY effective in terms of lethality, if you can land hits on non-armoured spots with JHP rounds that person is practically dead in 1-2 shots, armour would get hit so hard it would dent or shatter, causing heavy bruising. So this gun would most likely knock most people unconscious or on their ass with 1-2 shots to the plate carrier.

The 7.62x39 just punches harder, but has been proven to do worse against the 5.56x45 when it comes to penetration. It's slower, and heavier. There's not a huge difference; it is very a powerful round. But the 5.56 remains the "better cartridge", on paper that is. I'd assume that in theory, the 7.62x39 is generally better suited for combat (without taking accuracy into account, that is) due to simply packing a bigger punch thanks to the projectile having more mass than the 5.56's, potentially having more stopping power against targets both with and without body armor. Still. There's no question, 5.56x45 has better penetration all around.

Unless you are confusing it with a different NATO cartridge 7.62x51mm which I'm pretty sure will have a greater chance of over penetration?

      @Wrathington 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@fen3311 apparently so I looked into it a little bit more because I couldn't sleep, apparently cover it penetrates better because it is less likely to ricochet which makes sense due to a higher mass projectile and more energy. However if it doesn't ricochet (which it won't on soft tissue or armour) higher velocity and a smaller surface area should over penetrate (the target) better? So I'm guessing if you hit the target and there is a civilian or something you don't want to hit behind the target 7.62x39 is better? If you are spitting lead everywhere fully automatic or are a terrible shot you are more likely to penetrate cover and cause collateral damage through light walls with the 7.62x39 maybe?

@@Wrathington Yeah close enough. Tiny fast bois like 5.56 will use their speed and thin profile to penetrate armour better, but they tend to break and fragment after that. Which goes for any other barrier too, not that they wont fly through a few drywalls. At the end of the day the differences are tiny enough that you're squeezing out tiny tradeoffs, usually 5.56 comes out ahead.

AK’s are just as accurate, the myth stems from a multitude of reasons, one being the 7.62x39 being fired out of a standard AKM 16.3in barrel has a MV of 2,300 Ft/s vs 5.56 coming out of a standard M4 14.5 in barrel at 2,970 Ft/s, reducing range for the 7.62 one of the many reasons Russians adopted 5.45 and giving a narrative that it’s not “accurate” wrong it just can’t reach as far shooter dependent tho, another reason which tends to be forgotten is it being widely portrayed to the the “bad guy gun” and the AR platform to be the “good guy gun” by media and cinema which is plagued with false information about firearms in general but you can see where that goes, and with penetration yes the 7.62x39 has potential to over penetrate then the 5.56 (but only on soft targets in comparison)such as just the human body itself. slower heavier rounds carry and retain their weight upon impact of soft targets, and don’t become fragmented when passing through, while smaller faster rounds such as the 5.56 preform better on penetrating hard targets IE, steel or ceramic plates or points of cover the enemy might take, but for soft targets small spitzer shaped rifle rounds like 5.56,5.45,.300blk become fragmented in soft targets at shorter ranges IE a CQB situation inflicting more internal damage as fragments pass through bones, tissue and maybe arteries. I agree there AKs at least 7.62 AKs aren’t the ideal CQB weapon in a law enforcement aspect because 8 out of 10 times your target isn’t wearing armor at least not plates either ceramic or steel, modern AK-74Ms,AK-105s or even a god forbidden 5.56 AK would be great I do hope to see a 105 in the game seeing as the FSB uses it for their law enforcement and CT operations. Also I’m not being a dick about it just a little correction the Mmmm the “it’s not as accurate” claim that’s already been a debunked gun myth for decades

Good points! Yes, perhaps I should have worded it as that 5.56 is more effective at longer ranges. The one thing I would note is that for 5.56x45 specifically, the fragmentation effect happens more reliably with specific ammo (M193) at higher velocities. Some 5.56 cqb guns like the MK18 may not be able to consistently deliver rounds that fragment.
But of course, this is mostly me nitpicking. Shot placement is the key factor in how effective any gun will be.

I totally didnt get the point about how .223 is better at police operations than 7.62. Well first- 5.56 ment to deal max damage after penetration be it shattering or more violent energy transfer than bigger cal. Its bone blender and police need to arrest, not to execute. They're not counter terror.
And bullets anyways will, if given the chance, overpenetrate many obstacles like dozen of drywalls, multiple doors and if shot too close even a brick wall (go look up how mosin-nagant in 7.62х53 almost shoots throguh rail. AK-74 and AR-15 might shoot through brickwalls).
And main reason why some countries use ak for special operations is that army is traning with it and operators usually chosen from infantry or other branch. With police however its too complicated. Sometimes army trains them treating same as recruits, sometimes its armed forces of state agencies (taxes, border, anticorruptional bodies) and its something inbetween of PMC and millitia. Or its just police officers good enough to be trusted a gun PD can buy and traning provided by same department. Its a spectrum from "alot of funds no fredom" to budget judge Dredd cosplay honestly.

There are AK platforms in 5.56/5.45 cal, especially 5.56 in the usa. I've even seen one in a gun store in 9mm. The issue isn't the caliber with the AK, it's the fact that it's just less versatile and modular than the AR platform. The AK platform just isn't that good at being adapted and configured to most police uses. That and having police trained with a specific weapon platform is very ideal. That's why nearly every police force rifle looks like a AR-15, but with different lengths, rail mount locations, and sometimes different calibers (excluding SMG's).
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though. I don't really know why I wrote this aside from it bugging me that it seemed like they acted like every AK is in 7.62. That's like saying every Glock is 9mm, every AR is 5.56, and every FN is in 5.7
