Make it after the kids go to bed. Put it into the empty milk jug. Chill overnight and they will never know the difference when on cereal.

When I was a child back in the sixties, my mother made mixed milk. She would mix up the powdered mik in the blender and then add some whole milk to it. That was the only way she could get us kids to drink it. She did this because as a family of eight, we went through milk fast and the grocery store was far away.

One thing people may consider is the type of water used to mix up the milk. The same powdered milk can taste completely different with tap water vs distilled, spring, purified, or even a home's well water.

I store both nonfat and whole milk powder (the brands I buy come in sealed #10 cans so shelf life is much better). I make my own powdered milk blend by mixing 1 part nonfat with 1 part whole milk (I keep my blend vacuum sealed in a mason jar to maximize shelf life). Making powdered milk taste good is all about ignoring the instructions on the package... Using my nonfat and whole milk blend I mix like this:
    1 cup powdered milk blend
    1 quart water
    SMALL pinch salt
    1 drop liquid sweetener
Whisk well and chill - absolutely delicious!!

If you get a good buttermilk and pour it into silicone molds and freeze (buttermilk pucks)... you have instant buttermilk culture. When you need buttermilk - place a puck in a mason jar and let thaw, fill with fresh or mixed powdered milk, mix well, and let sit at room temperature 24-48 hours stirring once or twice a day - the buttermilk puck has all the live bacterial cultures to turn your fresh milk into a new batch of buttermilk! Once it is thickened and tangy, just put it into the fridge and use as you normally would.

I’m an elderly disabled veteran who because I grew up on the instant non fat milk I prefer milk the liquid form more. However yes income has its limitations and lately I use a food service company like meals on wheels and they send me powder to make milk. I tend to add less water and chill it overnight to make sure it’s thoroughly blended. But if you make too much you should shake it up before each use. My parents used to mix the powder into the milk jug from the store and blend the powdered milk with whole milk or 2%. So that being said I have experience as a chef and I use powdered milk for biscuits and gravy, to make my pot pies have a creamy texture for my chicken and turkey style pies. I make creamy corn and a mean crab and corn chowder. Yeah I’ve learned to improvise if needed. I worked on a cruise vessel and well if you run out of an ingredient you can’t just run out to your local grocery store. So I’ve had to substitute things like leaf lettuce for romaine because the romaine was rotten. Yeah sorry but I don’t trust eating food on a moving Petri dish in the middle of the ocean. Yeah I saw so many violations against health regulations it will make you never eat anything cooked except in your kitchen. And the disgusting content seen on TH-cam about poor food safety and I’m feeling nauseated just thinking about the things I’ve personally seen

Powdered milk also makes the best yoghurt. Make it up with extra milk powder (I use 200g of milk powder for 1L of yoghurt, whereas 1L of milk is 140g of powder - sorry, don't know it in freedom units) and add a couple of tablespoons of the previous batch of yoghurt (store bought the first time), then whack it in the Instant Pot on the yoghurt setting for 8 hours. No need to pre-boil with powdered milk. It makes the thickest, creamiest, most luscious yoghurt I've ever had and it costs me about $2 for a litre rather than $6-7. Add a sweetener if you want. I don't as I like to add a bit on top when I dish it up.

@@litaknowes7294 it’s amazingly good isn’t it! Better than store bought.
For anyone without an instant pot, heat the mixed up milk to about 43°C (110°F), then mix in your yoghurt from a previous batch. Pour into a container and incubate it. Wrap it up in towels and/or blankets and put it in an insulated cooler, or in the switched off oven (turning the light on is helpful) or some other warm place for 8 hours. It’s not quite as thick as with the instant pot, which is almost scoopable like ice cream, but it’s about the same consistency as store bought yoghurt.

Reading about the "medicinal benefits" AFTER, I was thunderstruck to find that all the ingredients have some antibiotic, or anti-microbial, and /or anti-fungal properties! Yahoo!

Add a couple of cookies on the side, or a slice of multigrain toast. Delicious and nutritious too.😊❤

I bought A2/A2 whole powdered milk. The organic stuff from Azure's partner the Alexander farm people. It came in a big paper sack so of course it had to be repackaged for long term storage. I used 5 gallon buckets with oxygen absorbers and food grade plastic liners. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't repackage again in glass half gallon jars. Azure has those nice green tinted jars plus my vacuum packaging capabilities. Thanks for another thought provoking video.

I use powdered goats milk (full fat) because it’s easier on my stomach than cow’s milk. It tastes a bit different than cow’s milk (stronger) but it’s still delicious.

My first child was premature and was allergic to everything they had for babies back them 1978. I couldn't breast feed him because of a medication they gave me. The only thing we found that he could take was goat milk. We were blessed to have a family friend who had milk goats. My son says he could remember seeing the gallon of fresh milk being brought to the house. He is 46 years old now and can still only have about half of cup of regular milk. But, if he finds someone who has goat milk, he will buy some. It's always been the milk people could drink when any other milk hurts them. I totally understand what you mean.

Thanks I usually get whole powdered milk from Hoosier Farm in Indiana. I go through it fast so not sure of the shelf life of it.
I'll have to look into this to be more prepared because I'd like to have more on hand for the future. I have mylar bags if it will extend
the shelf life. I do have a vacuum sealer as well.
I do have whey powder on hand as well.
When I was a kid my mom got powdered milk from commodities and she never seemed to get the lumps out.
Cornflakes and lumps wasn't thrilling but if hungry it worked and we overcame.
I might trying adding some vanilla when I make it if not adding to things I'm cooking that I wouldn't want to have that taste.
In Iowa raw milk is allowed now but most of the farmers are not close enough to go purchase any so powdered milk is a better
    choice.
I may check out your Thrive link

I use buttermilk powder in some of my non sourdough breads. We don't drink fresh milk.
Lately I've been into how to get fresh buttermilk without running to the store. I have been into making clabber milk and it worked with some cultured buttermilk I had left also just purchased the powder to make cultured buttermilk and keep buttermilk going without running out of fresh cultured. Haven't tried it yet..but sounds hopeful and can't wait to make some buttermilk cornbread and my Irish soda bread. The cultured clabber milk I made with some of my left over cultured buttermilk did made terrific buttermilk cornbread..I couldn't tell the difference. Lot's of TH-cam videos showed me how to make clabber milk. Guess I'm behind times CM been around forever :)

I never had to drink powdered milk as a kid, but I have it stored now, mostly Nido, some in orig. cans, some vac. sealed. I also put back evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and this stuff from the spanish section called crema. OMG - that stuff is sweet and delicious, LOL. Just recently, I spied shelf-stable milk. OK - I'd never noticed this before, it's on the very bottom shelf near the pie filling (I make my own pie filling, so don't look there). I bought whole and 2-percent. It isn't bad. A carton of it is the same price as a gallon of milk, but it lasts a few months. I'll remember it next winter (because I wrote in on the calendar, LOL), to stock up on before blizzards. Also, I've always put some milk in the freezer in fall for winter storms. I just wash out the big peanut butter jars. You have to shake it up, but it is fine. Someday....we'll have our Nigerian Dwarf goats for milk and cheese. Edited to add: I keep the buttermilk powder on hand, too. I love the 'real' buttermilk in a carton for biscuits and stuff, but I may be positive I'll make the item that uses the buttermilk, and then life happens......

I was curious about the whey so I Googled it... nine to 19 months According to the most recent research, protein powders like whey protein powder have a shelf life of nine to 19 months when stored under normal conditions. These normal conditions are defined as 70°F and 35% humidity. If a protein contains additives, that can extend the shelf life for up to two years. Sep 8, 2020

I like to make nido milk and mix with Ovalinte and then add to my coffee in the morning. I make a quart or a pint to chill overnight. Haven't bought milk from the store in years.
