Making references to video games used to be such a "no no" in the tactical world but games have become more realistic and we all play them.. so I've always made comparisons. Glad to see you are too.
The funny thing is the reason many games started including them was due to players wanting a way to quickly go from a high optic to a low optic for practical reasons, and practical reasons are practical even if the games them self are semi-realistic at best.
You're so right. In the military I trained with a semi-auto pistol and a few variation short/mid range rifles. I was running a red dot on top of my ACOG for a handful of years, (including deployment) and really liked the pact that I did not have to lower my head to aim and shoot. Basically what it did was that I was more prone to look trough the red dot when in a more casual position during stops on patrols and such. Effectively I didn't have to move my head or rifle much, to start firing aimed shot. Felt more natural to me, especially in CQB where one would aim over a sight anyways (no reason to look through an optic at 4 meters ish, but having the red dot on top of the ACOG made it easy to engage a target at 4 meters and then 20-50 meters split seconds later.
Yeah when compared to a canted rds the piggyback placement is better for passive aiming under nv and and with gas masks as well as having an unobstructed fov.
Literally have changed my entire viewpoint on an old school train of thought. Thank you for everything you do Lucas and the whole TRex crew. Innovators like no other. Will be ordering mine quicktime.

TREX et al embodies the “civilian market” of the firearms culture. The civilian market is so biblically and absurdly ahead of the military market that its almost comical. The civilians enjoy the ability to adapt instantly while the military takes a decade to field a dated piece of equipment. I hope that in the future the government can learn to streamline from civilian business and furnish our warriors with emerging technology as it arises instead of as it becomes outdated.
bc5766 the reason government, particularly military takes so long is mainly for three reasons, cost, training, and reliability. Having the newest gear is expensive and fitting an entire fleet with new stuff for training as well as deployment isn’t feasible. Giving guys new gear before a deployment would disrupt muscle memory and potentially create a less lethal fighting force. If the new gear isn’t reliable, it risks lives and the mission.
I suggest you look at the Australian Army's model of procurement for individual equipment. The philosophy is to buy small amounts, often. Usually the units embarking on their readiness cycle receive a new issue of top-shelf, commercially available gear, which carries them through their deployment cycle. After, the gear gets handed to second-line units or reserves and the process begins again. This allows the military to keep up with current trends and improvements. As a member of a normal infantry unit, our gear is streets ahead of others such as the US or UK. In fact, several times our international friends commented that we looked more akin to a 'ranger' unit than anything else. Maybe the US should look into this model?
@@ericwong5207 If I ever find myself talking to an ADF member in town, I'll try and remember this. Already learned that the new uniform is basically procured in the individuals own time, and for the folks at Lavarack Barracks they needed to go into Melbourne to fill their paperwork out. Learned a lot of other stuff as well, but this model actually seems to make sense concerning rotation assignment for costs.
Except in reality, the civilian market is just streamlining and mass producing solutions thought up by men in the field. The civilian market doesn't innovate, it just synergizes.

Lucas Botkin you are the MAN. Excellent video. I am a hunter from Finland. I use FN semi auto in caliber 30-06. I use european 3-12x56 scope and small red dot combination. Here we need a scope that we can use also in very low light time to time also in moonshine. We like to use big and good scopes which are good in low light but not good for short range aiming. In hunting there are situations that you wait to get a moose some 50-200 meters but sometimes they are at 5 to 25 meters. Scope 3-12 is not the aiming tool in that kind of situations. It´s easy and fast to change from scope to red dot just by turnin rifle a bit. When you hunt a bear it is only animal here that can shoot back as we say. Then when the bear is close the red dot is absolutely necessary.
I imagine all the personal shooting vids on TH-cam may do more for gun technology than anything else over the last few decades. It’s really incredible how much info, varying opinions, and testing is available to watch. Very cool vid!

I have been using a 45* offset with a Mini Reflex for a year now. I am amazed how fast and well it works. I zeroed it at 50 and it is good out to 300. I was issued an Aimpoint , EoTech, ACOG and Elcan. This mini at 45 is faster than any of those. I have it mounted even with the shell deflector. No problems of any kind and I find it faster to shoot than farther out mounting. Lucas did a good job on the video and info provided.
Just gotta say that your videos are very concise and conscious. I've started to try apply many of your tactics and think they are tremendous for all levels of shooters. Beginner, intermediate, and expert alike.
@@Evan-Gomes The dude is clearly an instructor/competition shooter tho, they can reload lightning quick. Plus dumping the mag rather than saving it lets you shave time off and get your gun up faster.
I naturally shoot canted 45 so i actually placed a secondary fully enclosed red dot along with one on top as my backup (Sig Romeo 5s) . I’ve found that having a reflex dot installed is a little too volatile to breakage. In training I’ve been a lot faster an accurate at close quarters, I don’t train to be a sniper and justifying a shooting at 600 yards would be tough in any court. I catch a ton of shit from the “experts” 🤣 but it’s what works for me!
With the canted sight the hand is a bit more in a natural position if at a 30° angle and the recoil pushes right into your shoulder, that's probably why you feel like you get better recoil management. Keeping the sight picture at the same elevation is a great tip. Personally think it's a much better option than a magnifier in everything except mounted storage, since it's a "pokey thing on the side" and some rough handling may bend the mount. Overall it just sits in more firmly and switching from magnification to magnification is faster without hinges or having to take your hand off the gun.

If say you have the opportunity to protect your family from home invaders, just as an example, at least you know how to properly use a firearm-since there more to it than just “point and pull trigger”. Man I love how you show what you are talking about with small clips as you explain. Really makes it easy to understand the specific problems that you mention.
Something that could be really interesting and innovative when technology and batteries get a little farther along would be some kind of aiming module that you put on the top rail of your gun that kind of interfaces with some kind of eye-pro and shows you in real time where your weapon is trained. You could collect a dope using a standard optic at various ranges and then key it into your aiming module and glasses so that no matter where you're aiming, you're getting an accurate ballistic compensated reticle thrown up on your HUD. Have it keyed into a button on the grip where your middle finger sits or something kind of like some models of pistol laser. Fuck all the fingerprint scanner smartgun stuff, a smart gun should be something that makes target acquisition and all the admin stuff you have to keep track of easier. Tell your module system how many magazines you're going out with, how many rounds in each, etc and have it keep track of how many times the action has cycled. You'd literally have an FPS-like HUD thrown up on your eye pro. Holographic lasers would be neat too. No need to have a LAM way out on your gun or anything, just have the glasses project a laser from the front of your gun using some kind of IR blipper like in a TV remote. This would make it more difficult for enemies to use your weapons too. If the top of the gun was just flat and all the aiming and stuff was taken care of on the eyepro end, you'd essentially just have a brick of a gun that's useless without the eyepro component. You could be livestreaming back to command as well in real time, so if you're confirmed killed they can just brick your glasses so enemies can't take them off you. Obviously all of this would require thick lenses and a lot of computery shit going on up front, so why not use this opportunity to design a close-faced helmet system as well? They're already talking about exo-suits and stuff to improve troop capability and reduce MSIs from all the shit they have to carry, give them hightech thick helmets with some kind of neck support system that attaches to the exo-suit so they can absorb shock better and cope with their 15lb helmets. POWER ARMOR, MAN, GIVE US THE FUCKING POWER ARMOR ALREADY. Apologies, this happens every time I see a picture of the Laugo Arms Alien. I just want more techno-gats and techno-gat accessories.

Now that I'm out, video games, shows and even TH-cam channels have gotten me into so much more. COD got me into a 44 mag revolver. Took a while but it's my bed side, night intruder deterrent now.
Also I think people have realized that a look large group off people are introduced to guns through video games
