- I've got so many questions regards bowl turning sets and my reccomendation.... There are few out there however I always suggest to see if you can go the route of buying individually.... And this set is what I would buy if on limited budget and only want to turn cross grain work...
Hope this helps
Enjoy

You’re not a dangerous turner. Matter of fact you’re one of the best, most talented and intelligent turners ive ever seen. Some people are just way too uptight. Thank you again for sharing your expertise with us. Have a great day and Merry Christmas to you and your family. Much respect, Keith.
Thank you Keith very much, I wish Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
Dont let the Utube bullys get you down. Love your videos and Instructional technique
No worries, I find them funny and would like to see how they make work done....😅
No body likes the TH-cam police, a bunch of people sitting at home who can’t even use a three pin plug let alone turning chisels, your videos are so informative and very well put together. I’m a carpenter of some 40 years plus and turner part time and I’ve learnt so much from your techniques, thank you very much and keep them coming and I hope you and yours have a happy new year 😊
Love the socket joke😂 I just find those safety police comments funny as I would not get anything done according to them 😅....
Have a Great Christmas and happy New Year
You show the correct way the viewers need to make sure they follow your directions correctly I very much appreciate your instruction
Thank you for that, 🤗
The safety police!? Probably you mean the safety trolls! 😎
They are after the makers of good content, trying to spoil the pleasure.
Consider them a necessary nuisance and continue doing what you do!
I find them funny as I would not get anything done as they describe how to work... Thank you very much for watching 🤗
You're a great turner! Thank you again. I learn so much from your videos
Thank you very much
Tomislav, not once have I seen you using dangerous practices in your turning, mate. All us serious woodturners (both hobbyists and professional) know wood turning is a potentially dangerous process. You follow in the footsteps of one of the finest turners of our time and he (Richard Raffan) also doesn't work unsafely. The keyboard commandos who set themselves above everyone else as safety police either don't understand that there are multiple ways to work safely, not just their way or they know little about wood turning at all. Now, about Richard Raffan's sock and your bit of old tee shirt...at least neither of them is an old pair of underpants!! Cheers mate, I wish you and all your family a happy and safe Christmas.
Thank you very much, I just find those safety comments quite funny as in my production work I would not done anything, according to there tehnique of course.....
You made me laugh with old underpaints😂😂, I've been getting from my todler his ripped stuff that we don't pass on so those will be in next videos 😂
Thank you for great wishes and Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
The "keyboard turners" have probably never been anywhere close to a lathe, let alone held a bull gouge.
I don't have the cool socks either. I use old dish towels.
Hi Tomislav, I'm just passing by to wish you and your family Merry Christmas! 🎄 And as always, thanks for sharing your knowledge 🤗
Thank you very much, I appriciate that and wish you and your family Merry Christmas ☺️
As a turner of many years, you have to build up your own health and safety / common sense. The safety police's audience are for those incapable of learning and developing their own safety.
Keep going Tomislav, your work / methods and ethos are excellent.
Thank you sir, I just find that funny as I would not get anything done according to them...😅
Very nice work Tomislav. I've been turning bowls for over 44 years now. I am a self taught turner. I really wish I could have had access to something like TH-cam when I started. From my experience you are teaching the correct use of the wood and tools. I can not imagine what the saftey police had to complain about. Tell them to stuff it in their ear. Another excellent job young man. Merry Christmas and may God Bless you and your family.
Thank you very much for watching and support.... I found that safety police comments are funny, as I would not get anything done according to them 😅....
Merry Christmas and happy new year ☺️ all the best for Tomasic family
I wouldn't worry about the safety police, I have watched most of your videos and don't consider any of your techniques to be unsafe. You have tremendous talent and they can't find anything else to complain about 😢.
I noticed a wood collar on your tool rest post. Can you please explain the thinking behind this?.
One of the best wood turning channels on TH-cam.
Thanks for all your time doing these videos and I hope you continue the same style.
Merry Christmas and happy new Year to you and your family.
Thank you very much, That collar is just for a few weeks until I get muscle memorie where is approximate height as its new lathe and it has a lot of travel....but sort of like having it so far so might keep it on😅
Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
Tomislav, I’m fairley new to your channel and I’m a relatively new turner in my 60’s I’ve been teaching myself from watching TH-cam videos. Your channel in my opinion is one of the best out there! Your attention to detail how you present the tool to the wood and explanations are second to none. I think the so-called Police need to go back to school.. I’ve been binge watching many of your videos to get caught up but most importantly I’m learning proper techniques that I did not see on my learning quest. Thank you for being you, thank you for taking the time to plan your videos and thank you for sharing your knowledge! Merry Christmas to you and your family I wish you good health and prosperity in 2024 Take care, Wayne P.S beautiful plate by the way👍
Thank you Wayne for you support and kind words, I really appriciate that and I wish you and your family all the best for Christmas and new year ☺️
Another very informative video. Keep them coming!
I'll do my best 🤗
Your videos are very safe. Keep them coming.
Thank you very much 😀
I only started turning around a year ago and watching your videos has been very helpful. Keep up the good work. I wish you and yours a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Thank you sir very much, Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
Absolutely loved your comment about the “safety sissies “. You have a real talent of simply explaining your craft. I’m learning so much. I’ve been a woodworker all my life, but have only recently delved into the wood turning more seriously and are really enjoying you explaining which tools you use, when to use them, and how to get the best results from them. You make it look effortless. Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas, keep up the good work. 😜😎cheers Y😎RKY
Thank you very much for kind words, Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
🕶thanks Tomislav
Excellent video.
Thank you 😀
Oh my you are obviously more knowledgeable than the safety police!!
I just find them funny as I would not done anything if I go by those rules🤗
I don't see any danger in your methods. Great video ! Merry Christmas and happy New Year
Thank you ☺️Merry Christmas to you and your family from Tomasic family
I think your a great turner and mentor. If someone can't see or tell that your an advanced woodturner, maybe they shouldn't watch your videos. Keep up the good work, your doing a great job on the channel.
Thank you very much 🤗
Dangerous…no,no,no. You are not dangerous. You and Richard are the two most watched turners on my you tube, followed by Ronald Khan and Phil Anderson. I have learned so much from the no nonsense straight forward approach that you all take. I am learning all the time from all of you. I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas.
Thank you sir for watching and support what I do 🤗 Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
As far as safety goes, I've appreciated that you show catches while explaining techniques in your videos. Knowing how to do cuts and what can go wrong if you don't do things right is a big plus in terms of teaching safety. I'm not sure what people say you do wrong, and can't judge since I'm a beginner here to learn, but nothing jumped out at me watching the videos.
That said, I have a questions with respect to starting out. I bought a mid-sized lathe and have been turning for a while with carbide tools because I didn't know anyone to mentor me and figured that'd be a relative safe and easy way to get into the hobby. If I want to proceed, and use more efficient tools like gauges and regular scrapers, I would also need to get some way to sharpen tools. Can I put a CBN wheel on a regular bench grinder, or do they require a special grinder? Do I need more than one grit of wheel? What width of wheel(s) do I need? What grit(s) do I need to keep tools sharp?
Good question sir, most 6 or 8 inch grinders will accept cbn, however you have to check Arbor lenght and diameter, and when you buy cbn it will state which width it is and what bore size, and if you need adapter....
In my opinion you basicsly need only one cbn and one rough wheel, usually I use grey wheel 60 grit to shape the tools and 100 grit cbn for sharpening.... In my mind everything above 180 grit cbn just doesn't make much sense....
I like how you explain there are more ways than one. Do what you are comfortable with is the best way. The plates look great. Thank you for more information, I have my 1st plate chucked up now.
Merry Christmas and thank you for all your experience and inspiration. Thank you!
Thank you very much for watching and support what I do, Merry Christmas to you and your family
Hi 👋, nice job, 👍, MERY Christmas, Happy New Year, Phil,
Merry Christmas to you Phil and your family ☺️
Very good tips on what to get a beginning wood turner, including that you are responsible for your own safety. Also lovely plates. Thanks for another entertaining and educationl video.
Thank you Joris😀
Thank you so much for sharing these great tips. No, you are not a dangerous turner. You are however one of the best. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Thank you sir for kind words 🤗
Great video. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thank you, All the best to you as well and your family ☺️
Tomislav; as an architect who uses his hands to express ideas, I love the way you talk with your hands and fingers.
Have you thought to reach out to the manufacturer XXX of the gloves you use with half the fingers cut off and create a "XXX Tomislav fingerless turning glove" (that has a manufactured "edge" (rather than a really ugly jagged scissor cut))... actually, in your merch drop, I'd definitely buy "yellow".
As for safety, yes ,you are absolutely correct when you say we are all responsible fo our own safety.
Turning wood always has inherent "safety issues"; I haven't seen you do anything really "sketchy" and if you do something "marginal", you make appropriate comments.
Please do not let the neah-sayer snowflakes compromise either your turnings or content.
Yeah, you do things beginners should never do (due to lack of experiance / practice), but you do it well aware of what you are doing and the consequences of a "SNAFU"
Tomislav, stay safe, be well
Thank you sir for kind words and support, Never accually thought of making merch ,but you gave me an idea for future....
Thank you and Merry Christmas
Great as always. Just a suggestion but I would be interested to hear your thoughts on a learning pathway for new turners to develop their skills. I know that would depend on what they plan to turn but for someone starting out they often don’t know.
Good advice, I'll put in on my notepad and try to make video 😀
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thanks
You for another wonderful video!
Thank you,Merry Christmas to you as well 😀
Tomislav, I see noting dangerous in your wood turning techniques. In fact I see an exceptionally gifted turner with an intuitive sense and feel displayed by few others. You accomplish more with one cut than many turners do after 5 minutes of pecking. The Safety Police are likely jealous of your skill and growing subscriber support. The inflexible views of some pompous turners with an inflated self opinion does not appeal to me regardless of their actual ability....I much prefer your "Street Smart" down to earth approach and explanations. It annoys me you need to defend yourself. Don't change a thing....just ignore them. Happy Holidays.
Thank you very much, I just find those kind of safety comments quite funny as I would not done any work on the lathe... Especially production work 😅
Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
Thanks for showing the correct way to turn. Really appreciate your skills.
More great instruction. I’m pretty sure that those same safety police were trolling my channel when o first started. They wouldn’t discuss anything, only pitch a fit and disappear. I ended up blocking them. Thanks for sharing these basics.
I would say that is something similar..... They gotta trol someone I guess 😂
Merry Christmas to you and your family
Merry Christmas @@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
Nice simple design that looks great . Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much for watching
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom on witch tools to have when starting to turn bowls and cross grain work. From your perspective I think I would need a bowl gouge and spindle gouge to get started. You are right about buying a set, you would end up with stuff you wouldn’t use. Thanks again for your advice and video.
No worries, thank You for watching and support what I do 🤗
Merry Christmas to you and your family
Don’t know what problems the safety police have with your technique, I watch a handful turners video including the great master R. Raffan and I see not issues with your work. I am and have even learning much from you. Thank you. Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
Thank you sir, I find those safety police comments funny as I would not get done any work at all according to them 😅...
Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
I wear a polycarbonate shield most of the time when roughing out cross grain anything. Figured this out for myself long ago (large chunk flew by my head), long before being the safety police were a thing. Otherwise, safety glasses, mainly for slight magnification to see tool edges. Happily, this is my choice. The fact is, you have turned many miles (kilometers) of timber and we can count your fingers. You certainly know what's important -- especially the dust collection -- gratifying to see that, especially knowing the cost. I'm sure many older turners wish they'd used dust collection decades ago.
Carry on.
And another wonderful video. Won't be long before we see Tomasic signature tools, and the sets will make sense.
And Merry Christmas, you and yours and all yall!
Thank you very much for kind words and support, I find that safety police comments funny as I would not get anything done in my production work according to them.... No worries,I don't take that very serious, but I have noted as you mention safety is important but woodworking as general has a sense of danger to it.....
Merry Christmas to you and your family from Tomasic family ☺️
Thank you so much for the way you clearly explain the way how to use turning tools. Merry Christmas to you and all your family.
Thank you, Merry Christmas to you and your family as well...all the best
Very nice video, I am new to turning and this video is great.
May I recommend watching Richard Raffan's you tube videos too. He is equally as good as Tomislav and they both have similar styles.
Thank you very much
Thank you for reccomending my mentor, he is better then me and such a expirience of knowledge....☺️
Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas. I have really enjoyed your instructive videos this last year, and look forward to many more. You and Richard have certainly improved my turning, and my enjoyment of my hobby. Thanks once again.
Really appriciate to hear that and Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
Amazing please keep these tutorials coming. They really help out I really appreciate all the work you put in! Merry Christmas!
I'll do my best, ☺️
Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
Thank you for another great video packed with good information and techniques! Very Blessed Christmas to you and your family 🤠🇨🇱
Thank you very much, Merry Christmas to you as well as your family ☺️
Awsome camera resolution! And, thanks sharing your knowledge.
Great lesson on basic bowl turning tools Tomislav. Merry Christmas to you as well and to your family.
Thank you, Merry Christmas to you and your family
Beautiful work, Tom. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge ❤
Please do not spend any of your time or energy on the safety police. Focus on something positive and productive. Appreciate the disclaimer, but it is not necessary. I am really enjoying your content and learning invaluable information. Truly appreciate your craftsmanship and art. Thank you!
Thank you very much for watching and support, and time you took to watch my content.... No worries, I just find that safety police comments little funny...
Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
Very nice another great video, thanks for all the great information.
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
I live near D-way and Boxmaster tool company all M42 member of our local club might be another sponsor!
Thank you very much for watching, I did send email to Doug at DWay, that was long time ago,I should send again , I have heard such a great stuff about there tools and I would be honored to get them on board for sponzorship ☺️
Another great video I wish I had listened more when I first started I fully agree with you it would have saved me money buying good quality tools, not the less expensive sets . but that being said I was not sure how much I would enjoy turning but instantly I was hooked.Happy holidays Tom
Thank you very much, wish you as well all the best 😀
Hello Tomislav,
thanks again for another informative video. I bought the Record Power six-piece premium set together with my lathe almost a year ago. I can work really well with most of the tools. The bowl gouge with standard bevel is actually my favourite for bowls, although I have since bought one from Crown and one from Widemann when the wife wasn't looking 🤣. However, I have never used the 12 mm scraper before. I'm going to rework it, just like you described. I wanted to build one myself especially for the recesses, but it's much easier this way.
Don't take the safety police thing too much to heart. I don't know many channels that refer to safety aspects as often as yours. How often have you pointed out how important the choice of wood is when it comes to cracks etc.? If you look at what dangerous stuff is shown on other channels, it's like baking a cake without an oven.
I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas and lots of success in 2024. I wish myself many more videos like this one.
Greetings Andreas
Thank you Andreas and Merry Christmas to you and your family from Tomasic family ☺️
Just one more great video. I can never get the wispy shavings from the scraper like you do. Can you explain how you sharpen the scraper and make the hook on the scraper? Merry Christmas and happy new year.
Thanks☺️ I have several videos on sharpening and shaping scrapers and I'll do in next few videos as well really in depth about different style of scrapers...☺️
Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
I'm a novice turner. I really appreciate your content! Do you happen to have any videos on what types of hardwood you can recommend for. novice turners? Thanks!
I have in beginners series a video on timber but not for specific timber, But any like domestic hardwood like maple, oak, beech walnut Works great ☺️
I forgot to commend you for mentioning your mentor from time to time. I don't understand why he doesn't have more subscribers.@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
Happy Christmas Tomi 😁
Thank you, Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
Thanks for another useful and well presented video.
As for the "safety police" from what I've seen in their comments on various channels most of them have never used a wood working tool in their lives so what do they know!
The phrase I've heard that I like best is a corruption of Latin. Ne illigetimi carborundum ( spelling is probably wrong but I think it comes through ). Rough translation is "don't let the bastards grind you down".
I presume the spacer on your tool rest is to limit how far down it will go but correct me if I'm wrong on that. If that is the purpose how did you decide on what the size was?
Thank you Randy, I just find those safety police comments funny as I would not get anything done according to those rules.... Yes the collar is to sort of give muscle memorie where is roughly good height, but I started to like having one.... I'll probably make another one more precise and video it....
Merry Christmas to you and your family
I Tomislav, firstly Merry Christmas, Sretan Božić i Nova Godina. Was the Beech dry or green? Whenever I use a scraper I can never achieve the shavings that you do. The wood I have is very dry, is that the reason?
Sretan Božić i Nova godina Vama i vašoj obitelji 🤗 Thank you very much and I like how you took the time to translate it😀
Merry Christmas
The beech was bone dry, it was on the shelf for years, My guess on why you have shavings different is the differnce in hook or burr on the scraper, now you accually gave me an idea for next videos on scrapers how different burrs give different shavings.... I hope that video series will help out ☺️
Hi Thomas, Is it important to put the oil on before the wax? Is that oil you used like boiled linseed oil?
I put oil just so I cover all the grooves and it spreads wax a little bit easier.... But you can use beeswax alone or oil alone as well....☺️
Great video! I have learned much from you and Richard. Was it the “safety police” or the safety nazis you mentioned?
Ignore the Safety Police. If they had their way we would have to use blunt tools on a stationary lathe!!!!
Love it, I just find that safety police comments funny as I would not done anything on the lathe 🤗
Or a glove box, maybe robotic controls.
I've actually seen a lathe in a surplus chemistry lab glove box. Probably not so much for safety as this was in a house and the mess would have been everywhere. Come to think of it, safety was a priority -- his wife would've killed him otherwise. Way before the internet and the chunk of pine between centers was horribly chewed. Looked like he might have been using a dull screwdriver. He explained that it was supposed to look like that and sandpaper would clean everything up. Hope his technique has improved in the decades since.
Merry Christmas.
Was the bowl gouge and spindle gouge you recommended 1/2" diameter rod or 1/2" flute?
Bowl gouge is 12mm or 1/2inch rod and spindle gouge was 10mm or 3/8 but half inch is great option as well, both are rod measurements
Merry Christmas
Thank you so much for replying. A very Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Great video I’m upgrading my lathe do you have any suggestions my budget is €1000 thanks
Hello hi, there are some nice lathe out there around that budget, most of them will be 12-14 inch swing, you will not regret if you go for any of the known brands, so in that price range you might find Record power, nova , rikon, jet , maybe laguna, not sure how much is the smallest one they offer...but any lathe from this companies and other known is good option, just stay away from cheap ones from box stores, go for cast iron lathes and with VFD .....
If you have acces to Record power, they offer coronet herald, the ks schulte offeres midi plus ll lathe,...
Other thing is, what is your old lathe? up to 1000$ are smaller Lathe and they might not be upgrade beacuse of the size.... So maybe to safe a bit more and invest if you will spend more time on the lathe....
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning thanks. My old lathe is a Bernardo 450 dm and its belt slips every time I use it. I was looking at the record power herald so I think I will get that. Thanks
You are right, so if I want to finish stuff on the lathe I would use beeswax and oil, and its not durable finish but for utilitarian stuff you don't have to have extremely durable finish.... Now when I make stuff for clients I put oil finish of the lathe.... But again its personal preference and I don't like to use let say hardwax oils a lot as they are expensive but they don't last much longer then something like tung or linseed oil....
The safety police needs to be run out of town on a rail. I fell that in your teachings, you fell like I can understand what you are conveying to me. You are not a
unsafe turner or teacher. I have been turning for many years, and I look forward to your videos, because I am still learning.
Thank you very much for that🤗 I appriciate feedback ☺️
Merry Christmas to you and your family ☺️
Is the wide heavy duty scraper also Crown M42? Or is it another line from Crown?
No, its there I Believe m2 with cryogenic process....its not m42
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturningThanks!
Would be great to know the names of these gouges
I think in video I mention what they are and sizes.
