I am twice your age, but if I ever accomplish anything in wood turning, I may have to start calling you my mentor. Thanks for the valuable demonstration once again.
Very clear and informative video. Can see advantages of both standard and negative rake scrapers. Will try these out when my confidence has increased as I am still an early stage novice to turning. Many thanks for these tutorials.
Thank you Tomislav, once again for this informative and packed video. No nonsense, just facts and good practice uses. Man, I think you could start writing a book, if you hadn't already. You've got more than enough material.
Thank-you for this very objective view of the negative rake scraper as well as some of your approaches for sharpening both negative rake and regular scrapers. I have a square end scraper that is going to get a bit of a radius as a result of me watching this video; it think that will improve its usefulness and make it much safer to use.
You always seem to answer my questions even before I think of them! I had wondered how the negative rake scraper differed from using a skew, and you said that the point of the skew is less robust because of the angle- perfect. Your negative rake scraping on the side of that blank really made some cotton-candy like shavings. The biggest thing I learned is that I need to sharpen my scrapers a lot more than I have been!
Yep. Constantly messing with NR scrapers is a pain. I tend to use mine for final shape tuning. If I want a really clean cut, from a fresh, full sharpening with honing and burnishing I find that I can use a given scraper for only a few minutes before I have to re-hone and re-burnish the edge. And... I can do about 3 re-honing/burnishings before I have to (or should) hone everything off and go back to the grinder. If I did commercial/professional turning, I think I'd have to have several of the same-shape NR scrapers or sell my NR scrapers and get straight scrapers. Good, videos, Sir!
Thanks Tomislav. You have answered a lot of discussion on a recent facebook post which I believe you made a comment. I have one negative rake scraper but rarely use it preferring the versatility of the standard scraper. Making the bead was very informative. A great tutorial 🤩
Thanks for another great video, I appreciate the time and effort you put in to make them. Also, thanks for mentioning the importance of the second bevel on negative rake and how that impacts the tool’s self-feeding characteristics 👍
I think he don't dislike them, but usually people praised about negative rake scrapers like they are some magic tool, where they are just little safer scrapers....and on other side tell bad stories about standard scrapers where in most cases is user error and with little understanding about how they work they can be just the same safe.... For me they are another tool tehnique under my belt and if any situation need different methods, I have the source to deal with..... Hope that makes sense 😅 Its just another way of doing ☺️ Thank you very much for watching and that you support my work 🤗
I find that when I use scrapers, negative rake or normal with rolled burr, the finish looks and feels great, but then when you apply a finish, I can see what I call 'micro torn out grain'. You can't feel it, but its high-lighted by the finish.

Pozdrav, powermatic is awsome lathe, not sure about that perticular model, but jet 1840 was on my list, its great lathe, any from Jet should serve you very well.
Thanks for (all) the specialized/narrow-subject videos! At what RPM are you using these acrapers on that maple? Was the wood dried? Hard northern maple? (In North America we have soft and hard maple varieties.)
It is hard maple, we don't have many variations of it but mostly its hard maple. I don't have set rpm for scrapers or wood...I always turn the rpm to fastest/safe speed and use all my tools that way unless some specific situation.... This was probably turn around 1600rpm...its smaller blank

Tomislav, thank you for these excellent lessons on scrapers they are really helpful.
i found you long after Richard Raffin , and I know you apriciate his work , your efforts are mutch enjoyed , thanks, Bryan McC abe AKA , Woodbutcher .
Thank you Bryan 😉
Thank you for all your wonderful lessons Tomislav.

You are a good teacher 🍻

Indeed it will improve usefullness ,no doubt.
Its such a underrated tool but essential in my work
Love the little notch for detailing, I thought it was just a chip.
This will be a helpful idea to try on a current project.
I figured it about the position. at center. Great lesson. Thank you
I’ll be adding some negative rake scrapers based on your demo here. Thanks for sharing!

Scrapers do need sharpening more often then other tools as they rely on burr to do all the work, thank you very much for watching
Thanks for a brilliant explanation of the scraper!
Excellent! Well done Tomislav. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos. The work is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Thank you Johnny ☺️
Awesome instruction! 😊

Thank you, that is the reason I enjoy and use standard scrapers, for me atleast the burr last long time and much more versitile
🕶Thank you Tomislav for another great video. Thanks for the time and effort.
Thank You Steven
Again a brilliant, easy to understand instructional video. Thanks.🙏🙏😘😘
Glad to hear that ☺️

Lots of great information. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing your great experience.
Thank You for watching
Such a great tutorial. Not confusing in the least. Continuing to learn so much from you! God bless.
Thank you sir 😀
Great instruction again. Thank you.
Thank you Doug

Very helpful video,particularly the sharpening.
Ça serrait génial de pouvoir mettre des sous titres pour les. Pays européen merci 👍👍✌️✌️
After a few days subtitles Will be available, and automatic translation to other language.
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Thank you , very match
Thanks for this info Tomislav. I use both myself. They each have uses.
Indeed, both work great
thanks for sharing . was needed very much !!!!!!
Glad to help out
Of course it only really matters what angle the tool takes the wood off.ie the angle you hold the tool on the rest.
Yet again another brilliant lesson. I am curious why Richard Raffan has such a dislike of negative rake scrapers.

I should have pointed our that although this bowl was straight from tool, usually I would sand it, sanding will remove all those tool marks👍
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning I meant even after sanding. It's a shame I can't show you want I mean

Te voy a copiar el ángulo del raspados negativo
Thank you. What is the reationship to center. At center, below or above?
Usually at center height, there are times where you approch diffently but that is in another video 🤗
Do you put a burr on the negative rake scraper?
Yes I do, without burr scrapers usually don't give clean results
Are these scrapers 3/4"? I can't find any Crown Cyro wider here in the USA
Nope, these were 1inch, have you tried Rockler?
They sell crown tools
Tomislav you have some great videos but they are much too long.
Thank you, sometimes I can't edit stuff out if I think its important.
I know that they are called scrapers, shouldnt they be called cutters? These tools always get a bad press because of their name.
Not sure about the bad name press, I like term Scraper, it may not be correct term but works and everyone knows what is it☺️
