Hi Tomislav. I have just started turning. I was having trouble presenting a gouge to the wood. I really had trouble hollowing lidded bowls.bmy chisels weren't cutting. I had all my tools sharp. I watched your video on lidded bowls. I watched it over and over and over until I realized how you start your cuts and how you follow thru with your shear push cuts . My knowledge tripled. It was a giant leap in my abilities. Thank you so much my friend
Great little box beautifully executed. I also really appreciate the way you walk us through your thought process. The knob is a perfect example. Thank you for sharing.
Very nice design. Love the beads. You have a fantastic talent making the manufacture of these items look easy. Like the fact that you are like Richard Raffen and constantly alter designs as you go along to make them more interesting.
Your simplistic approach to thing’s others would panic over is amazing 🤩 and yes I said the same word bulbous I normally put the knob back in the chuck and turned the same one down, but what ever rocks your boat 😂 again you might not know but the amount of knowledge you have just past on ( because you just do it and take it for granted ) is brilliant. Thanks Tomislav, I’ll buy you another beer when I pass your workshop 😂
I like that form, too. I think what you said at the end explained why, it has as much detail and skill as you want to include. I really liked the unexpected shape of the foot.
I would say that most people don't know the differents between spindle gouge which I use or my mentor or spindle roughing gouge with big deep flute in U shape....that is the tool to avoid using on cross grain work.... But I can see how turners get mistaken by the two but this regular spindle gouge is great tool for cross grain work.... Thank you sir for watching and comment 😀 I really appriciate that
Nice job Tomislav. I love boxes like that and you turn it so easily! I always learn something new each time I watch. Going to go find those maple blanks in my shop and get turning!
Beautiful cross grain box, Tomislav. Great job turning, explaining and most importantly enjoying yourself. This is the best part about watching your videos. 😊😊
Hey Hayes, I know you from the WoWies. You've subscribed one of the best channels on TH-cam. And I'll be looking for the salt bowls. Tomislav, as usual, excellent.
The lines of bowl and lid are nice exercise , simple lines Your choice of black walnut for knob was perfect The simple plum shape low knob is spot on So many turners make tall thin showy finials This knob will now be added to a small trinket box that I have been making for my wife also from maple with wax finish
Hi Tomislav, I made a very similar box for my daughter recently. I enjoyed your recent videos about scrapers, as a result I converted an old skew, 12mm x 8mm thick, to a negative rake scraper. I have been surprised by how well it worked and how useful it is. Once again, Thank You.
What a lovely box, and as always very instructive and enjoyable to watch. I hope you can use that bigger knowb for another project. Thanks for the video.
Very nice box / bowl. When I use a set diameter drill bit, for the mortice for the knob, etc. I have a cheap set of spanners ( wrenches), which corresponds to the drill bit and saves a little bit set up messing around to get the right measurement. I learnt this trick from Mike Peace quite a few years ago.
That is a beautiful piece, the shape is really nice. ... the beads inside the lid take decorating the lid to a whole new level. I really like your exposition of your thoughts as you work through the design when you are doing these videos; it really helps give ideas of design considerations for projects. When you hollowed the inside of the base to make a curved bottom, what was the reason for choosing to use a square end scraper rather than a round nose scraper to get the curve?
Thank you very much for watching and support what I do 🤗 I use square end as its really shallow curve and its easier to do it like that and I have a corner at the bottom so square end help there as well🤗
A beginner with a midi (me) might give this a try with some crab apple wood. I would use some walnut and hard maple, but I don't want to completely copy you.
Just by doing your way it won't be a direct copy, if you publish or make video about it just give credits where its due as I like to do to a maker who inspired me to make perticular item. Go for it
As usual, great looking box but I thought it was dangerous to use spindle gouges on bowls. I thought i'd never enjoy making small bowls. Thanks for your gift of knowledge.
Looking closely at the spincle gouge being used , it has a shaft of solid round tool steel and not a drop forged tang like a file of many spindle gouges and is as strong or stronger than many bowl gouges
Excellent job. Enjoyed watching it. I just turned a little box out of maple but had some problems with tear out and had to do more sanding than I would have liked. I'm assuming maybe my scraper was sharp enough. What would be your thoughts? Thanks.
Just watched with the sound off lol because my wife is doing something , as a new turner I appreciate all you vids they are a great help can I ask where you are located? Thank you.
Harvey Turbo T-40 is a great midi lathe, also used market is an option . If I have to buy again I would buy stratos lathe, robust , Killinger is another great lathe but I think its only for eures
Thanks for suggestion, I'll make a video on that topic as well.... Sometimes I seal and most of the time I don't..... Depends when the tree was fallen and how much moisture it has...but I'll do more in depth on video soon
Spindle gouges are cheaper,in my hands they work close to bowl gouge, I just like using them and when I started out we could not buy bowl gouge here in Croatia, so tradicionally cross grain work was done using continental gouges....hope that make sense ☺️
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning thank you! I love your content. My early instructors forbid the use of spindle gouges Fot hollowing bowls due to the wider flute and catches and the spindle gouges have tangs typically not continuous rod of HSS like a bowl gouges!
Tomislav. I'm having trouble starting a cut on the side between the foot and top. My chisels seem sharp to me. I have no problem with a scrape or shear cut with my bowl gouge. Can't start and stay in the cut from bottom to top. What am I doing wrong?
Its hard to help without visuals, but what usually happens is too much pressure against the wood and it wants to push gouge away....try finding that spot that push the gouge away and just hold the gouge and let the wood go over the gouge, without forsing anything.... Once you cut away that uneven surface you will be able to continue on.... I'll put this on the list of topics for videos, so you can expect something soon
Thank you for helping me . I wish I lived close to you and maybe you could be like a mentor to me. I don't know how to thank you. I look forward to your next video. You are so kind.
Thank you, its called diamond hone, this credit card size hone is from WOODCUT, it does not replace grinder, its to touch up tools and raise the burr when needed.
Looks like you got your moneys worth out of the spindle gouge, maybe we’ll see those beautiful crown tools soon. Do you do anything with the gouges at the end of their life?
I have become an avid follower of your turnings. I shall be sad to see you have to retire that gouge soon. Have you done a video explaining the wooden collar on the rest post?

You seem to be in a professional renaissance . Your feel for lines, shapes, shadows and planes is exceptional
Thank you David, I still have a lot to learn and find my "voice" in design....🤗
I marvel at your mastery of the tools,
Thank you sir....its just practice

Beautiful box. Live the over hanging lid and all the beads. Great work.
Thank you Doug☺️
Most youtube turners say never use a spindle gouge on side grain work. Only use them on spindle end grain work. Quite amazed at what you do. 👍🏻

Very clean. Glad to see you 😊
Excellent demonstration Tomislav - lots of design tips.

New subscriber. You inspired me to make a woodturning video on my favorite thing to make, a salt bowl.
Glad to hear that 🤗 thank you for watching

Thank you Wayne☺️
Thank you for sharing! Our videos are very instructional and a joy to watch. Like all your explanations as you are turning.
Thank you very much 😀
You have a great set of hands.
Thank you 👍
Very nise box and video⚙
Thank you 😀
I enjoyed watching you make your favorite. It is very nice. A good gift but I expect those close to you have several by now.
Not a lot of my family have my work as I sell it or try it to sell as soon as possible but the closes family has there fair share of my work 😉
Nice work dude, such a beautiful piece of wood 😍😍
Thanks 😀

Very nicely done.
Thanks ☺️

I always learn something new from your videos. I notice that you have a wooden sleeve around the shaft of the tool rest. What is the reason for this?
Thank you,glad to hear that
This is the video about that sleeve

Tom, could you give us the approximate diameter and thickness of these box blanks? Thank you.
No problem, both blanks were 2inch or 50mm thick and 5,5inch diameter if not mistaken.
You have helped me so much. I can't say this enough.....THANK YOU MY FRIEND !!!!
Inclusion. I like those boxes and enjoy your videos very much!
The word he's looking for at 20:50🙂.
Thanks for that😉
Beautiful turning! Ever thought of a career in neurosurgery?
😂 thank you, I'm not good with latin so I won't be a good doc😂

They are safe to use, but it does work little bit different then bowl gouge.... Thank You for watching and support what I do
Stay safe out there my friend

Could be that the tools are dull or on scraper that you don't have nice burr, when burr is gone and you use maple it likes to pull out grain.
Very nice lidded box. Was the dark wood caused by bark inclusion? It happens when a branch doesn’t develop correctly and bark forms within the trunk.
Yes, it is, I just could not find a word😅
I love seeing how your spindle gouge is getting smaller and smaller. I think it will be worn out by April 15th.
😂😂 could be even sooner as now just a milimetar or so has left in it....☺️
Just watched with the sound off lol because my wife is doing something , as a new turner I appreciate all you vids they are a great help can I ask where you are located? Thank you.
Thank you John, I'm from Zagreb Croatia 😉
Nice job my friend..
Thank you very much
