The side tearout has been a problem for me. I have been making one of the boxes in one of your previous videos and this solution will help quite a bit. Thanks for the tip.
The timing is Perfect today i bought my First Square End scraper and now i can See how i can use it 😃 And i also have to turn such a bowl. This Video is Perfect! Thank you.
If you also watch Richard Raffan you will see the end is not left square, but backed off ever so slightly to the right for clearance. A very gentle curve in fact.
Glad to see you in your new shop and turning again. I like the groove technique in the bottom corner of the tray. Great idea. It really sets off the flat bottom and straight side.
Like everyone else, so happy to see you in your new studio. You worked hard for this and the layout is very thoughtful. Cool project and demonstration, as usual.
I asked the question about how to turn the 'tray' shape as you term it. Great video...i thought i would be confined to carbide tools but this video has further opened my eyes to traditional tool and scrapers....thanks 😊
Nice demonstration. A customer once called a one of my straight wall bowls a “dog dish” and I haven’t made once since. They are more difficult to nicely make than a curved wall.
Primo! Turns out that I am working on a bowl with that design. I would have probably used the method you demonstrate here, but it's always good to watch a pro do it. Cheers!
Thank you Tomislav. This is exactly what I have been looking for in order to do my next project. Very clear and very thorough presentation with basic tools.
Thank you, this issue of going straight down without getting tool marks and tearout has always been a problem for me. I have a bowl that I did and I will try to clean it up using this technique. As always your detailed explanations are very helpful.
Very good video I am in the process of moving back to our small family farm setting up new wood shop in barn the farm house is built out of chestnut taken of the property in the early 1930s love your new shop
Great to see you turning again. Appreciate seeing the techniques you use for getting a flat bottom; thanks to whomever asked that question. The irony of this is that right now, I'm working on designing some 3D printed threaded boxes -- making flat bottoms is easy -- getting a rounded bottom requires more design work.
Glad to see you up and running in the new shop! Thanks for all the hard work and informative videos, as always. What I took from today's was the spindle gouge cut from the rim down to the bottom. I had been thinking about that earlier & how to do it. Was nice to see it demonstrated well. Thanks!
lovely technique Tomi. Great to see you working again in your new workshop. Amazing how quickly you did the enormous amount of work for the conversion. Congratulations to and all involved . cheers Tony
Nice to see you turning in your new shop. That is a lovely chestnut tray -dish. Thanks for another educational video. (Good luck on the lathe engine, it does sound a bit off)
Nice to have you back Tomislav, and to learn more from you. Harvey's custome service is very good, make a video recording of the concern and send it to them, they will respond quickly to hou.
So happy that you're back to it! How nice is it having the dust collector in another room?! Another great video! Thanks for sharing your time and talents!
I have the same problem with the headstock making some noise, Harvey sent me a new bearing. I have not changed it yet, It doesn't bother me too much so when it's time to replace the drive belt I will replace the bearing at that time. Thanks for making another informative video.
Glad to hear that they are promt and quick,it would not bother me as well if I don't have to film anything, its not that bad but its annoing on video... I'll keep you updated on this topic😀
Glad to see you back turning again! My specialty is small cross grain boxes. Usually the box is similar to your tray. The sides vary from square, as your tray to flared out maybe as much as 15 degrees. With a rounded lid. I have been cleaning the corners between the side and bottom with a traditional shaped skew. Your method looks far more efficient. And less likely to scar the opposing wood with the corner of the skew. As always, I love your methods and am learning new approaches to turning!
Thanks for showing your technique on this shaped turning. These are what I'd call candy dishes. These square-cornered shapes can be very frustrating. I'd much rather do this on end-grain but that's not always possible. I've found that you can also shear scrape the inside wall if you have the correct scraper shape. I love the Crown multi-tip shear scraper. If you have all the blade shapes there isn't much you can't shear scrape. Of course, you can also make your own blades for custom applications. We all dislike torn grain & sanding so shear scraping is the best alternative when a push cut isn't possible. I wonder if that Harvey lathe noise is actually the small belt. It's amazing how a small rubber belt can really make some noise. I'd love to see you put that lathe to the test for power. I'm curious if it has the horsepower. Glad to see you back in business & getting dirty. I always look forward to you showing more of your work. Stay cool.
Great work buddy! Glad all is good and your moved in and good to go. This would be a perfect tortilla warmer with a turned lid. I want to make one now😂
Tomislav that turned out really nice and lovely grain in the wood. I hope you are enjoying your new shop and new lathe, is the noise a bearing or something. Anyway great job.
I like having the spindle center at my elbow high when relaxed, so you might adjust by either lifting the lathe or making platform to stand on... Although I'm not a fan of platform but something like rubber matt can help a lot
No , what do you think all the turners used before bowl gouges? They used Continental spindle gouges. With proper tehnique you can use it. You should NEVER use spindle Roughing gouge on facework
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning I must start off by apologizing. I though the reason behind your video was to teach fellow wood turners how to turn safely. And I was wrong. This helps so much. "It's super loud" was honestly such a helpful thing to hear. I thought I was doing something wrong. 😅

Very nice, glad to see you turning in your new shop, great information.
Good to have you turning again. Love the new shop.

It's great to see you up and running in your new shop and a really helpful lesson on flat bottom / straight side tray / box. Here's to many more. 🍺🎊🎊

Just to add my noise in your headstock may not be what Im experiencing. Mine was the bearing. Harveys customer service in my opinion is excellent.

Thank you buddy,go for it its fun and I have to make the lid as well
As always great lesson
Very well balanced design! What was the starting thickness of the chestnut blank? Thanks!
Thank you, it was 50mm thickness
I love it! Do you leave the same thickness on the base as the sides?
Depending what feels right, sometimes you might wanna a bit more thickness and weigh in the bottom
A proper flat bottom is not easy either, well done.
the screw chuck please show how you made yours Richard went so fast never understood have to make it
I have a video already

Thanks Dennis sells

I need one of these scrapers. Do you make them?
Crown tool is making my shear scraper called REFINER,other scrapers are from Crown as well... I WILL have my signature REFINER soon available

Thanks for another great tutorial. New workshop needs something on the walls/ceiling to deaden the echo which spoils your commentary.
Hi Tomislav, just like it was a little time ago 😊 whats changed ? 😂😂😂
True,like I never stoped😀
Sounds like a dry bearing Mate!
To me as well...we shall see what engineers have to say☺️
You have black hands again Tomislav. Have you been turning walnut . First video in new shop with new lathe…..yes, you are back.
It is better to have sloped sides. They stack better.
You shouldn't NEVER use a spindle gouge on a bowl blank........ They are not built for face grain - end grain that keeps repeating of a bowl blank.
No , what do you think all the turners used before bowl gouges? They used Continental spindle gouges.
With proper tehnique you can use it.
You should NEVER use spindle Roughing gouge on facework
