  • DIY roof repair, uncut, unedited.
First, remove the damaged shingles and prep the area by removing any nails.
Second, install the new replacement shingles.
Third, seal any of the old shingles that had the seal strip split.

I’m glad to see you emphasizing safety first to your nephew. 42 years ago, a coworker of mine fell through the peak of a kiln building at Pennsylvania house where two guys were taken off the peak metal on the roof, but left the insulation laying in there, my coworker Step backwards and fell through the peak of the roof 30 to 40 feet to the concrete floor. He had multiple injuries including a broken femur pelvis, ribs, and pneumothorax. I’m not sure if he ruptured spleen anymore but it was life-changing. He was in his early 20s when it happened, he’s lucky he
    survived.
You can’t be to careful on roofs.
I enjoy watching your videos and the fact that you do a very good job.

I searched how to repair shingles and you're the first guy I found, this is the second video of yours I've watched, and I was surprised to see this was published 6 hours ago. Thank you, very good video. I need to know why it's done the way it is, not just shown how to do it. I appreciate the way you teach.

    Nice how-to, Brian!
In the economy we are experiencing, this can be a tremendous help for folks! Even if you dont do the repair, the knowledge can help folks understand whats involved, and know what they are getting if someone else is doing the work.
Thanks again, Have a great day here in Indiana! Stay cool!

This is an excellent video for beginners. Great job explaining the nail placement.
Whenever we do wind damage repairs it’s always because of high nails and blow through nails.
We use the OC Duration shingles for class 3 and OC FLEX shingles for class 4. I don’t think there’s a better wind resistant shingle out there.
The Duration shingle has that nail strip but an installer should take his time to hit the lower half of the nail strip so it hits the common bond area. 6 inch offset.
We use only 4 nails per shingle in trees areas. If it’s a wide open area like a lake for example we will 6 nail with the one two two one pattern. 6

Love your channel! Your videos are intensely educational. I was a professional home inspector for 25 years and the home's roof was always a huge part of my client's concern and mine as well. You really know your stuff! Stay safe up there!

Thank you for your repair tutorials that you present here, they have help me a lot. But i don't find in your channel videos about replacing the wood or sheeting ( i am not sure what the right term is) on the roof, that will be very helpful for me. thank you, keep up the good work 🤙

After a big roofing day I always enjoy watching some more roofing even though I've been following you for long enough to know everything you'll mention in this. Keep up the good work and the frequent uploads.

Wow, you're a life-saver! I am slowly preparing these days to repair a tiny section of my roof and I face pretty much the same scenario as in this video. Specifically, there's an area in my roof deck that is completely exposed and it also sits right below the hip and ridge shingles, and also right by the gable area. Fortunately, it's more like 4-5 feet of shingling instead of 12 feet as in your video. I just have one question (and I hope it's not too dumb): but is there any underlayer in the roof in this video? It seems that the roofing deck is bare wood, which is also the case in the part of my roof that I will repair. I am not sure if applying underlayer (before shingling) is worth it or not considering the giant bundle they sell at the hardware store.

Great job, however I would have just taken all the ridge off as well.

What keeps the top ridge down, glue? Didn’t see any nails being put in to hold it down.
