  • Worst roof ever installed - leaking vent pipe collar repair. It looks like someone tried to do a pipe collar repair previously. Just a few minutes into the repair it was obvious they didn't know what they were doing!
    It appeared they cut shingle short and just tucked them under the next shingle. We removed the plastic pipe boot to install an aluminum one as well as installed a pipe vent cap. please hit the thumbs up button and subscribe to the Grand Roofing channel, so you don't miss another video.

    As much as I hate to admit it, I got tired of replacing neoprene boots all the time. We all know that they only last 5 to 10 years before UV damage makes them split. So I started doing one of two things, convince the homeowner to upgrade to lead boots, or just slap a repair collar on it and be done. I saw no reason to pull shingles to only put another crappy neoprene boot back on it. Probably just me being lazy, but the result was exactly the same.

      Plastic boots on almost every roof I’ve ever torn off, very rarely were they leaking and if they were the roof was past it’s lifespan anyways

    • @georgegroot9704
      @georgegroot9704 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Beandiptheredneck I assume you are in Canada. I would think the UV degradation you all would see there would be quite a bit less than we see in Kentucky. I've also seen a huge difference in longevity in neoprene boots depending on manufacturers. I can tell you that I've torn off many neo boots that were still in good shape. But in my area, I've seen more that had failed in 10 years or less. Just my observation.

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This wasn't leaking because of it being plastic or neoprene. The leak was actually because somebody did a horrible job installing shingles around it. They simply cut part of the headlap of and tucked it up under the next shingle just a little bit.

    • @georgegroot9704
      @georgegroot9704 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GrandRoofingInc I have seen that a lot too. No attention to detail. The last crew I ran had standing orders to not cover up a flashing or boot till I had looked at it. A sad as that sounds, it kept my warranty work to almost zero. Of course I still had a few issues, like an idiot who bounced a nail gun against a poly double bubble skylight and shot a nail right into the corner🙄

      My replacement roof has now been done for over a year. Everything from soffits up was replaced. It looks great and has held up great. Wish my experience with my contractor was 100%, but it wasn’t. They mismanaged my job so badly (ex. did not cover exposed part of my roof and thunderstorm happened, drenching my home inside. I told them multiple times a day for a week the storm was forecast). After months of hassling and arguing, all was finally made right! As with most things in life, finding an excellent contractor is way harder than it should be.

What I saw was really ugly, dangerous and just so wrong. I explained the problems to the customer, and called the the worker that made it an armature that needs to go to jail. 1:00 You may want to actually watch some Y___E videos then you might realize just how many people say the exact same things. Its so bad that I cringe now every time someone says that. (Don't you think we know how to do the process, that we actually need it explained during every video?) I will instantly unsub if I hear it and never hit the buttons when someone mentions it. It just feels better when the idea comes from myself, you know? I usually don't bother explaining but you're video is good and maybe you can try the non intervention method for subs. I appreciate people who skip it and don't succumb to that desperation syndrome.
    1:24 Again, the video is excellent though. Keep it up, I'll stop back.
    4:35 The ethical demonstration is top notch, especially. You are smack on target about the low watts out there, ripping people off. Dispicable. Do you give the customers photo evidence so that they can confront? You could even confront repeat offenders? (or not)
    And if it weren't for the nag at the beginning....
    But I'll give you a second chance and stop back through my bookmark process....
    I definitely know how to replace individualized shingles now.
    PS Selling the dome is a really good plus sale and its actually a good thing to do; it is to keep critters out, birds nests, squirrels from getting in there and dying and clogging but not really rain and moisture because moisture generally forms inside of there anyhow (condensation, etc.) and if water getting in there and leaking would be a prob then it the stack would actually need to be repaired/replaced.
    I'm on my roof constantly. In fact I use my tree climbing harness as a safety system, AS SHOULD YOU (use a harness in case you bip when you should bop, since you are doing it professionally (often). A single story can F! you up and 3 stories, well.... Be careful,and don't get too cocky. Even the best can step on their own shoe lace once or twice in a lifetime. Best regards and bless your roof monkey self.

    IM only 7:34 in. My guess is when the new roof was put on, they didnt remove the boot and reinstall. The boot sat on top of old shingles, they left those shingles and just layed new shingles over the old so the boot is sandwiched between so they didnt have to remove the boot and do it right. Lazy, just my guess.

    Leaking vent stack boots at the pipe/boot junction... I've encountered this on numerous homes with roofs near the end of their useful lives. So, I just get a new rubber boot and slip it over the pipe bringing it down to within a few inches of the old one like an umbrella. The homeowners can have all the vent stack boots replaced when they get around to replacing the roof.
    I can't tell you how happy folks are when you give them a perfectly functional stop-gap solution at pennies on the dollar compared to other repair estimates.
    Of course, if the leak is at the roof deck level, some exploratory surgery and repair will be necessary.

    You seem knowledgeable enough. So if you want to upload some new content I’d be interested in you should show something difficult. Not basic valley, roof Jack, basic stuff. I wanna see you transition from flat to steep with 3 valleys and one chimney wout replacing steep roof. That’s what I’m doing now. Or waterproof nightmare area under an eave. Or terminate a roof to stucco wall over someone’s back porch wout breaking stucco out so they don’t have to pay twice as much to have there morning coffee wout getting wet. Maybe show how to best way reshingle step flashing wout being about to remove them. Us roofers know theres the perfect way to do everything and the ideal conditions. Sometimes money and time don’t allow. Don’t get me wrong. I never will install any roof wout feeling it can 20+ years. Anyways. That’s my rant. If you wanna interest us pros do something that you don’t know how you are gonna do until you start doing it. Best way to put it

    I did roofing and siding when I was younger, I dabbled in a few trades before I settled on carpentry.
    I've been working for myself as a handyman and I want to get back to working for someone else and with a crew again.
    I saw an ad looking for a journeyman roofer with commercial experience, that's not me but I applied anyways, I'm a journeyman carpenter with roofing experience, but mostly residential.
    Well, I didn't get the job, but I did find out that position paid $65 an hour. (It's a traveling job so per diem too)
    So I just landed a job as a traveling roofing laborer with a commercial roofing company. I'm going to get that commercial experience !!!

    Nice repair man I do my pipes the same exact way but sometimes I use metal roofing screws on the bottom of the pipe boot metal so they won’t pull out like nails do sometimes if the decking isn’t that good, in your case the decking looks solid so nails are fine, it’s good to see other roofers like yourself that cares to do a good job unlike a lot of other roofers out there

    Stick to roofing if that’s a plumbing stack vent you can’t cover it warm moist air it will condensate under the cap and will ice up blocking the vent that’s illegal in the plumbing code must always be left unobstructed

      Would an elbow work instead of the cap? Just curious, i know it may look funny but the main idea is to prevent water from flowing into the pipe

    $5 pipe boot where the rubber seals deteriorated in the summer months here in Texas. no bueno. Lead boots one piece sleeve, $30. Best quality. You must be up north. New subcriber

  • @stephenmiller8581
    @stephenmiller8581 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There’s nothing wrong with changing course once you start ripping into the roof. If the pipe boot isn’t the problem I would ask the homeowner if they still want it replaced. In that situation changing it for a metal one is a good idea especially since you’re going to warranty it for a year.

    No one knows what they like. I mean how many of these people would of guessed they'd be watching a roofing video today. Just put out good interesting content and we'll watch it. The more interesting and informative the better. Vent pipe collars and other random things most people don't think of are especially interesting because most people don't know how they work or how they're installed. If you can get more videos on unique repairs or stuff people don't know much about those are the videos I like to watch.

    Excellent content by going thru the whole job. By editing videos to cut time, will defeat the purpose of showing the entire process, which makes for a good job and might hurt your "reputation" as being a good roof repairman, if you get bad reviews because viewers think you were cutting corners. Split lengthy videos and that gives an option for the more experienced viewers.
    Someone viewing that is not experienced in roofing at all, could possibly mess up their job and cost them more money in the end, to fix the damage.
    Just like car repair videos, when you follow steps to do a repair and they either didn't include this step or edited it out to cut length.
    Sometimes special tools are required and they neglected to tell you about it. So you either go buy this tool or bring it to a mechanic.
    I think they call this; being caught between a rock and a hard place and you don't want to be there!
    Thanks for your great video! ' *****'
    Good Luck, and wish the best of luck with your channel. Shoot for a million subscribers...and "Don't Give Up!". You will make it!!!

    You really don't need to put a cap on plumbing vents. The rain's just going to go down in the sewer anyway. I nail bottom edges, but I put a blob of sealant under the aluminum where I'm gonna nail too then a little blob on top and push it down a bit. Then I paint the pipe to match the boot and whatnot.

    Those pipe flashings are shit in canada there huge and wide so there deep to each side.. dude I see a mistake u make and I'm sorry to say it, but your doing it less than 4 inches on the cuts, specifically around a pipe I like to have it 6" apart but it needs to be at least 4" this type shingle if I'm correct is 5" apart for a cut. In canada we use epdm under the pipe flashing for high winds and ice back up. I'm sorry but you should caulk the around the pipe they say no, but that will open up with the sun in about a year so is best to caulk. Again your flashings are very short edges so that is not so good could it be that is a cheaper one, I'm asking??
    The plastic is better than the aluminum it last longer and the animals will not get at it if installed right. Aluminum the raccoons rip it and the sun will make the pain all blah within a short time now that's the experience I have seen in canada the same with aluminum vents this is why I never use it.
