  • Leaking vent pipe collar repair. Roof over done bad. It looks like someone tried to do a pipe collar repair previously. Tar is not a good roofing leak fix!
    It appeared they cut shingles short and did not tucked them under the pipe flashing enough. We removed the plastic pipe boot to install an aluminum one. Please hit the thumbs up button and subscribe to the Grand Roofing channel, so you don't miss another video.

    Good morning I manage a roofing company in Visalia, California and every morning while having my wake up cup of coffee, I watch a portion of the news and then I finished by watching your how to videos on Roofing and I get so much out of your videos. They are so informative. I hope you continue to put out these videos. Great job.

    As a young woman, I was always interested in construction. I so wish that I had pursued that career instead of office work. But my high school rejected any girl learning industrial or the trades (1970's), so I took business courses. Watching your videos, I wish I was young again, because I am so drawn to roofing. I may not be strong enough to lift the shingle bundles up a ladder, but would have enjoyed the rest of the process.

    When it comes to putting ice and water around the pipe I take the ice and water shield put it on top of the pipe very lightly tap the outer part of the pipe all the way around until it makes a tight perfect circle and somewhat water tight even when the pipe boot goes bad
    Everyone does things differently tho
    Nice video

    • @Josh-ww5kz
      @Josh-ww5kz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always make sure to have ice and water touching the roof deck. So when I run my synthetic out, I cut maybe a 1ft piece and put it over it, just a bit bigger than the actual pipe boot. Then when I go to shingle, I put the boot on, sometimes I add in a small thin piece of shingle on the sides to cover the flange fully, cutting a small triangle off the sides closest to the hole, but making sure I have atleast two shingles under/cut around, then put ice and water on the sides and top, sandwiching it to the ice and water below it on the sides. Waterproof/ sheds water as much as possible, only flaw would be the actual boot material itself.

    Squirrels love the lead pipe boots here in N Al. They will chew any lead that is exposed . Chewing the swagged top will cause a leak sooner than you would think. Most roofers here have went back to the standard galv boot. Some Lumber Yards have quit stocking them. Something to consider.

  • @okyowwowoolala6384
    @okyowwowoolala6384 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video I learned a few things from it and many other things from your other videos, one never buy a house that has been shingled over an existing roof two never use tar and three when putting sealant around the top of the boot have the shingle ready, cut and in place so it just sits down on it instead of smearing if put in after. Your videos are very useful especially for amateurs like me I've been doing a lot of renovation on my house and I've made a lot of the mistakes that you pointed out in your videos and I feel like watching your videos I can fix those mistakes and I won't have issues later on down the road. And it's just really cool to watch your videos I like in detail videos where the whole process is shown instead of skipping ahead because there's always that weird issue that comes up in between and if your an amtuer like me you will have no idea if what you do is right or not.

    • @Josh-ww5kz
      @Josh-ww5kz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roofing tar is good for a few things, just doesn't have good uv protection as it will degrade it fast. So if you use it, only use it if it's for holding shingles down or in a area where sunlight isn't directly hitting it.

      Yes very true, that's why I tried to say when your ceiling the shingles back down to just put some dabs especially near key way. Otherwise you could trap it or divert it. On this application you have the actual hole in the decking. So if anything gets an above it it's going to go in the hole where the pipe comes through.

      I agree with you yes lead boots would be better. This one was actually leaking not because it was a cheap boot but because it was installed wrong. As long as they are tucked under the pipe boot far enough and not cracked they can work. I prefer aluminum because they don't crack. I actually stopped by a job I did 13 years ago to see how well the aluminum boot held up, more specifically the rubber part around the pipe. It is holding up very well and I plan on trying to shoot a video so people can get an idea of how they hold up.

      Yeah, it does not matter how good a quality product you use if its installed wrong

      You are so correct, I was thinking how many would watch this and say, come on get with it, you are taking to LONG, but getting RIGHT takes time, not a McD's drive thru. I would have him roof my house any day.
