Travel in Tirana is crazy interesting, Albania has such a crazy history with Enver Hoxha and his communist routine that it's revival has led to these unique bunkers all around the country. Aiming to build 750,000 nuclear bunkers around Albania he didn't quite succeed in that mission, but around Tirana we must have spotted at least 30 or so on our travels. On our road trip south of Albania we spotted hundreds more bunkers - fortunately, as history points out now, there was no nuclear attack and Albania prepared these bunkers without much reason.
You'll quickly pick up from this travel vlog how much we enjoy Tirana, it's a really cool place that hopefully translates well into this video and the others from Tirana we're still to share (including part 2 of this vlog).
Albania has been a real surprise for us, the kind of place we love visiting to film a few different kind of travel vlogs to show off something unique, some crazy history, travel around and do some exploring.
Finding nuclear bunkers wasn't on our to do list but you really can't visit Albania without finding them and being curious!

6:30 *144.000 bunkers of all types (source: ex-Albanian army general), not only for the military but also for the civil protection. The bunkers were manufactured because we didn't had any major allies at the time of the Cold War, so the threat of invading Albania from our neighbors was a reality and not paranoia. Declassified documents have shown these war-time plans.
PS: this bunker is just an Art Installation for the entrance of the declassified underground atomic shelter and not the real deal. ;)

Yes I am Albanian, I am not talking about aggregate wealth. Obviously silicon valley is way wealthier than Albania, I am talking about poverty. You won’t see that in Albania, ever. Take a walk in Tirana in the morning.
There was rubbish and people had king beds and tents in the fucking sidewalk. Walking in downtown san francisco I felt way more in danger than I’ve ever felt in Albania.
What is wealth? Is it just the dollar amount or what you can do with it? Is it better to have 1000 super rich billionaires or almost everyone with a paid home, with healthcare even though not the best healthcare in the world, but who wants the best healthcare in the world when you can’t even afford it? That’s the state of a lot of rich countries, almost no one in Albania is suffering from basic needs like shelter, food, education and healthcare.

I have visited during the travel there the Bunk’art 2 . There is another Bunk’Art( Bunk’Art 1) and there are the conference rooms, the dictator and his family rooms and other ministers. It’s huge and from what I have been told the decoration its the original. Most of the things are preserved. I loved them both. I suggest everyone that loves history and wants to know more to visit them both. It’s definitely a changing experience . Bunk’Art 1 is even bigger than Bunk’art 2 and with different levels.

That bunker that you went is under all the ministry buildings that you saw in yellow and only a small part is opened as a museum.
Fun fact about the colors, that buiding in the background at 11:26 is how the original colors were when they were built by the italians in the 20s. The other building in yellow is how they painted over them. They wanted to do a restauration project with all the ministry buildings to bring them back to their former colors as they are some of the oldest.

I believe these two places where connected but there is no visible way to pass through them... anyways, there you can learn a lot about communism in Albania and the place inside is fantastic! Oh, go eat something at Artigiano at Bllok (best pizzas ever) or Piceri Era or Il gusto... you can Trip Adviser these places.... if you are up to relax go check out the Tirana’s lake park! But go there in the afternoon when it’s less hot 🥵

About the expensive cars. Tirana has the highest concentration of rich people in Albania. You also have the mafia, and I guess she was trying to hide that fact. You have a lot of young people with super nice cars, comes from drug dealing in Europe/Asia/US. (not all)
For anyone thinking to visit, you won't regret it. This country is amazing and hopefully politicians who love the country will come into power.
Great video. Thank you for visiting my country.

we were just in Tirana recently and did a free walking tour - found out that the water on the square was planned and installed not too long ago - the purpose is to cool the square off due to the temperatures it can get to there - we definitely were glad to have gone to Bunker 2 -definitely depressing info but was so informative about the times that many of the people that you meet on the street lived through. When you think of how recent Albania opened up after communism you can really appreciate how far they have come! Our guide also told us that people didn't have any idea of how to drive and were informed that they needed to get a license to drive - figured that was why we were extra careful when crossing the street as the place is full of fairly new drivers!

@@DanegerAndStacey yes, we wish we could have seen more of the country but we did get up to Kruja as well. We sailed to Albania on our own sailboat so we also saw Durres as that is where we entered the country and had our boat in the commercial port. That was quite different for us for sure! We are so glad we stopped for a while in Albania.

PS: this bunker is just an Art Installation for the entrance of the declassified underground atomic shelter and not the real deal. ;)
