    Well I gotta say. The biggest thing on this upgrade is the new filament sensor. But that kinda makes it feel like a downgrade from the previous version. The only advantage of this new system is it's longevity and that's still not fully proven. But filament sensing wise is less capable than the optical one on the mk3. This is just a mechanical/ir sensor hybrid, which is good in the sense that it provides longer life since the only moving part is that pivoting lever triggering the sensor. But that's it. You don't get a better sensor, you're losing sensing capabilities. Your MK3S sensor isn't better at sensing the filament than any other sensor. Why? Because all it doesn't is sense that there's filament there. Any sensor can do that, what gave the mk3 an edge was that it was also able to sense movement therefore able to sense filament clogs or any other issues related to the filament being in but not being properly extruded. That's a big feature and you lose it with this "upgrade". I LOVE Prusa, not hating. Just stating facts. I got the upgrade and while testing it, that same flaw was exposed right away. While doing the upgrade I also replace the brass nozzle with a hardened one. Started printed and what do you know? My temp setting wasn't right for my new nozzle, it was too low. So the filament wasn't being extruded, the bondtech gears ground down the filament and it broke right there on the gears spot. So the printer was working but filament wasn't moving. I had no extrusion and the printer wasn't able to detect that. The MK3 would have caught that in the spot.

    I did the upgrade and received a filament sensor error. Checked connections several times, then updated firmware which solved the problem. Apparently the filament sensor may use a different type of sensing, don't know, but my firmware was at least one generation old.

    • @LA3DPrinterRepair
      @LA3DPrinterRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Manny Shulman good point, if you’re doing a *conversion* upgrade from MK3 to MK3S the machine specific firmware update is essential to handle the interruptor trigger based filament sensor vs the old laser that “talked” to the MCU via a two wire protocol.

      I had problems with the sensor on my mk2,5s upgrade. I took a permanent marker and opened the top plate. I marked that lever as well as i could and now it works!

    Can you please provide a link to that wire cover wrap you mentioned? I just got my MK3S kit up and running and I am loving that cord wrap stuff and was wondering how and where to get it. I have several things with multiple wires that I'd love to use that on. Thanks!

    I got the upgrade with some extra nozzles, as read that changing based on what you're printing is a good idea, however, with the 3S upgrade, you can't change the nozzle easily. The new channel for the hotend wires is in a different place, so there's nowhere to grip the block, except where the nozzle actually is. Have you tried this? Any thoughts?

    • @LA3DPrinterRepair
      @LA3DPrinterRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Moore it’s same as before: pull the fan shroud, use a 16mm spanner to hold the block from the back, and a 7mm socket on the nozzle to break it loose, I’ll make a vid.

    Excellent video , do you have one on how to replace just the extruder body?

  • @Robothut
    @Robothut 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you think that having the new extruder more closed off like it is will trap more of the heat from the extruder stepper motor and in to the bond tech gears ? Also the new part cooling duct "fang" still does not cool the back side or even the sides much, it still seems to be very front loaded for part cooling. Loved my MK2 and my MK3 so I know I will love the MK3S once I upgrade my machine. One thing I would love to know. The white signal wire on the new filament sensor does it go Low or High when filament is inserted ? I want to do a inductive sensor mod instead of the optical for the fun of doing it, but need to know more about the control signal they send the main board. Thank you for the great video.

    • @LA3DPrinterRepair
      @LA3DPrinterRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got printers printing pretty much constantly and heat migration to the extruder gears is not something I've run into; also part cooling in any form is better than no part cooling, joel's comparison of the R3 duct vs the old duct bears that out, they're both just fine and improvements are into diminishing returns territory.

    So i guess it no longer detects stuck filament.

    • @LA3DPrinterRepair
      @LA3DPrinterRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they would've updated the features list if that were the case; they have lost step detection via the Trinamic on all steppers; a clog or jam is going to trigger that. I need our own kits to do some abusive testing to confirm, but yea, I don't *think* that's been eliminated as a feature but once I've got an MK3S of our own I can beat to hell, I'll make a vid and confirm.

    • @DrR1pper
      @DrR1pper 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LA3DPrinterRepair Erik is right, you've lost filament stall detection by swapping the laser sensor for the IR sensor. Trinamic stallguard was never used for filament stall detection. The IR sensor can only be used as a filament run out sensor.

    • @LA3DPrinterRepair
      @LA3DPrinterRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DrR1pper You are correct that “stall” detection is no longer there, at least for now; but that being said, at least in my experience a clog isn’t something that just happens, usually you get extrusion problems before clog occurs, better in general to do regular cold pulls to purge residue before it becomes debris. The more I think about it, the more I question how important the clog detection is...

    • @DrR1pper
      @DrR1pper 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@LA3DPrinterRepair I don't disagree with you on that front, especially if the stall detection is temperamental. The biggest benefit I thought it to be is in the event of a knotted spool.

    I'm always surprised that you have a business servicing 3D printers. Wouldn't be possible in the UK, I think. Too many tinkerers

    • @LA3DPrinterRepair
      @LA3DPrinterRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you would have told me 5 years ago we'd be doing this full time I'd have called you crazy - it was supposed to be a side gig.
      The thing I realized is: cars wouldn't be as omnipresent in "common society" without the existence of the service depots; it's much easier to feed a horse in balance - and it's also easier to produce "things" in any other medium than printing: clay, cardboard are much easier routes, but the printer is an enabler.
      The calls started and didn't stop, so here we are.
      What's the equivalent "roadside service" in UK? We have AAA but I like to direct my flow beyond a US audience.
      Thanks Greg!
