Having just picked up my a6300, this focus tutorial is an essential watch. Many thanks Michael for producing. It goes without saying that more a6300 tutorials would be very much appreciated. Thanks again.

That's cool. Many first look videos are around. But to decide whether to jump from Canon to Sony, a detailed video like this is handy.
Such an awesome model! She is such a trooper smiling throughout the video. I can only imagine how bored she is. Not that the video is boring, but I assume she is not a photographer.

Thank you for this excellent video. I am a long term Canon DSLR (6D2 and 7D2) shooter but a complete newbie to the A6500 and mirrorless cameras in general. The A6500 focusing system was quite confusing at first but, your video certainly cleared it up greatly. Now it is just a factor of PRACTICE-PRACTICE-PRACTICE.

Punch-in on manual focus is super helpful. Focus peaking is junk though as you'll discover for yourself when you review your photos on a laptop screen at 100% or bigger.

As always, this video was phenomenal. One like simply isn't enough! You menu explanations are some of the best on the youtube. Have you gone through any iterations of lenses with this body? Deeply considering something better than my current kit lens!

I'm not going to talk sh*t about another photographer's A6300 class but your two videos on the A6300 are miles ahead of his tutorial.. His tutorial is 5.5 hours and I still haven't been able to get past 2 hours of it and I purchased it a week ago.
I'm anxious to get my hands on your tutorial video.

Hi Michael. This is such a great video for someone like me who is really trying to nail focus with the A6300. The good news is there are so many options fo so many scenarios that nailing it should be possible. The bad news is there are so many options that it's impossible to pick the right one 🤣 without a lot of experimentation and for that, I need a patient subject like Lauren. Perhaps you can loan her out for a day? All kidding aside, I do have a question. Sometimes, it's really hard to tell if you're press the center CTRL button with your thumb or not. At one point in the video where you're describing the peaking functionality, you say "we can even move this punch-in tool called the MF-Assist magnifier around using our directional pad" but it's not clear how the "punch-in tool" is activated. How did you call up the zoomed version of the image at that moment (aka "punch-in") so you could really get a close-up on the peaked areas. Also, for video where the subject might be moving every so slightly but never quickly, what AF-C speed would you recommend. My inclination is "slow" because if the person is only making slight movements, the camera is less likely to start hunting too quickly. Thank you in advance for whatever answers you can provide.

By default pressing center button on my camera didn't activate focus are (it was doing same thing as half pressing shutter). Fortunately it's easy to change in the menu:
Go to "Gear" menu, item #7. Choose "Custom Key (Shoot.)". Select "Center Button". Change it to "Focus Area".

Nice commentary on all the ways to focus the a6300. I wonder are u going to make a video in the field like some of your others, like focus hit rate where u have the model run around & such to see how the camera works in the real world, those are really great & useful.

Hi Michael, thanks for such a complete tutorial. I'm buying this camera soon, and as I'm new on photography, I was wondering if I should leave the focus on the shutter button or just configure it from the start as a back button focus. As you stated, that setting is great for sports, so I'm not sure since I'm going to do just family pictures and landscapes. My question is: what option is more useful to start with for a newbie like me? Thanks in advance and greetings from Argentina!

    hi Michael,
Thank for your awesome tutorials. I tried so many, but your tempo, voice explanation fits me. Well done. As I was following this tutorial, at the point you talk about pressing one time (minute play 5:35) on the center i'm getting a different prompt than you. On my first press is coming up the prompt Center Lock-on AF or ON Im not sure what setting is different on mine than yours, that I do not get the same results. Do you have a chit sheet for settings going folder/page by page? Probably that will help a lot, to do the on camera settings before and then as watching your tutorial we will gett the same screen as you do the presentation.
    Regards,
    Nick

Great Video, I was wondering when you set up the camera for back button focusing do you lose certain features such as Lock on AF? Also can you still use the Playmemories remote through your mobile device and gain auto focus?

  • @stsalik
    @stsalik 5 ปีที่แล้ว

fantastic explanation! I have been trying to use my 6500 for macro photography of insects. But there are usually so many other things in the foreground and background that AF has trouble finding the insect subject. Manual focus with the Sigma lens is too sloooow. Do you recommend a way to use AF when there is a lot in the foreground and background?

Hi, Good video. In minute 6 you talked about moving around focus point. But I have a question. Is there a way to customize a button to bring the focus area already selected? For example, I already selected a Flexible spot, but I want to move the focus to another corner. Can I do that without going back to the focus area? Canon has a button to activate the focus area already selected and Fujifilm has the joystick. you touch it and can move the focus around. I can not do that on Sony... Can I? Thanks.

Thank you for this tutorial! I have a dilemma. I have received my Sony a6500 in the mail (body only) along with the Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens. Out of the box, the lens (or maybe the camera?) refuses to focus at all. It remains very blurry no matter how many times I gently press the shutter button in order to get it to focus. Did I get a dud or am I doing something wrong? Thank you!
