I was a very close friend with the composer of Pearl's A Singer John Sembello . John and myself played in a local band outside Philadelphia in the mid 1960's called Johnny & The Vikings and remained friends for the remainder of his life until John's passing in May of 2013 . He was a true composer and blessed with a true talent for his craft . I'll always miss him for the remainder of my time here . The Sembello family had three sons all talented music men . John's younger brother Michael was the lead guitar player for Steve Wonder for almost 10 years and had a big hit of his own in 1983 called Maniac from the movie " Flashdance " and the youngest brother Danny also joined brother Mike in California when Mikes music career was sailing along great and Dan helped compose music too for people like the Pointer Sisters hit Neutron Dance . Sadly Danny passed away in a drowning incident in 2015.
This session has to be the best version of this song ever...and what a backing group she has there. Just awesome. Today's excuses for artistes don't deserve to share the same stage as Elkie.
Just listening to Elkie on R2 and decided to hit youtube......came across this.....OMG! As a 15yr old lad I bought an Elkie album.......I had a better taste in music then. Brilliant. (and she looks better in 2017 than 2006.....the woman is amazing)
Incredible version. What a voice... oh man. I'm 54 and hadn't heard this song for decades... litterally.. not even once. And then the other day it just popped into my head out of nowhere while I was driving my forklift... I can't for the life of me think how or why that happened but I laughed out loud to myself as I was singing the melody. Then at smoko I pulled up the original video from 1977 and it all came back to me. This song was HUGE in New Zealand when it came out and it was seared into my memory at the time. Elkie was definitely huge in my household. Mum had the album and it got thrashed along with Glen Campbell and Charlie Pride. I have to say I like singing that song. My voice is just gravelly enough to almost be legit. I get some funny looks from people. One of the cleaners at work about my age was like "OMG!!! Where did that come from? I LOVE that song!" I'm still wondering what triggered such a vivid musical memory. I hadn't heard it for ever and I even got the key right. Picked the guitar up when I got home and tried some kind of Chet Atkins accompanying. It's a classic. Love the changes in the bridge.
Truly awesome performance by Elkie and friends, the best on the net. Sang with such raw heartfelt emotion, since finding this I no longer listen to the no doubt studio controlled 70s hit that led me here. What an artist !
These guys do something really really really really special here. Its a special synergy I think some bands only hit on special songs. You can see when that guy does his briliant rockin sax solo, the whole crew is into it and it dont get much better than that. Brilliant start, middle and delightful pianist end. Wow
Its a pedal steel guitar, she is Sarah Jory and she comes from Newark UK. been playing pedal steel from about 8 yrs old. had a great solo career playing pedal steel all over UK , then with her own band she started singing, has paid her dues for many years and has become a great multi instrumentalist and entertainer .....a very talented musician, always genuine, warm and friendly and makes time for the fans.
Elkie . . . A hard working talent that has easily survived the test of time, A very underrated voice. Probably due to Her accessibility as a performing artist . . .
Since discovering this 4 years ago, it is a song I return to time and again, my favourite of all Elkies performances. A zillion times better than the 70s original I remember, full of emotion and sang from the heart. O Elkie, you played my hometown of Lancaster a while back, bit missed you as I now live outside Cambridge. Utterly Magnificent !
This song features heavily on the soundtrack to my life. I probably burst into this song most days of my life. Not many days I miss. I can't even think what I would be doing to burst into song. It happens so much it's like auto pilot . I've nailed the voice perfectly now 💕💓😙😎🎶🎵🎤🎤
Wow - just got reminded of this song - was a hit when I was about 15yrs old - and now I really appreciate it for the talent of the artist. Amazing! Must go buy it on itunes now and some more ....
Oh my! Elkie's been a big favorite of mine ever since I first heard her w. Vinegar Joe. She's still got that big emotional voice - even cultivated it further. Stellar band too! Sarah Jory is certainly one the best steelers I've ever heard - Technique, Timing and most of all: Taste!!!
She gets much better with age. Loved her original studio version. This blows it away, then again most live performances do. Lucky me, I got to see her a couple of times in 75-76 Lancs. Going back in two years, hope Elkie is still doin her thing!
This is SO GREAT I posted it on my Twitter page, "oh2WiseOne" and listen to it to help get my brain running up to speed when I wake up. Thanks Elkie !!!
75 myself and still find elkie as great as ever.
Saw her on stage last night. Now aged 74 she didn't miss a note and was as awesome as ever :)
Last comment 6 years ago she gets better all the time she is timeless I listened as as a child and always like to come back
Always loved Elkie-------- an individual no one sings like her ! Shame she never recieved the recognition she deserves .
Couldn't agree with you more and Maggie Bell from Maggie Bell and stone the crows another brilliant singer who just seemed to slip under the radar
sadly yes to both, also for Tina Arena i think she is amazing too and not much recognition.
Ms Brooks. You ROCK!
The finest British female artist of all time.
What a set of lungs. Sweet jesus.
Still fantastic and sexy in her 60s. One of the finest singers ever.
