2018 I was 18 years old, I went with my mum, dad, grandma and my little brother, elkie performed in my local town hall, she was 71 and she danced and sang her little heart out like she was in her 20s. 1000% one of my favourite memories and one of the best performances I’ve ever seen
When this was released in 1977 it was a massive hit. It wasn't underated at all. It migh have only reached #8 in the UK back then but the charts were very different. That was a big hit.
My father's favorite song. Tears have run through my face when I found this music on a cd inserted on his car system. It's been almost 10 months since my father passed away, too soon for a good and kind man. Still giving me goosebumps every time I hear this. Thank you, Elkie Brooks, for your gentle tone and for this lovely song.
Saw this lady in concert in the early eighties. She is tiny with a booming voice that causes vibrations in your chest.Totally unique talent, the hairs on the back of my neck and goosebumps continued for the duration of the concert.Very powerful singer with strong stage performance.Fifty year career ,fabulous!
Almost 80 now, still touring. Started out with Vinegar Joe, a full on rock band. Still got the attitude, even with more MOR material. Really good live.
Elkie was like a combination of those three, who were all great in their own right. Bonnie Tyler was underrated too. Like Elkie, she didn't fit the Beeb's TOTP mentality.@@johnjackson8692
I love these British female vocalists, the likes of Elkie, Barbara Dickson etc, who came to prominence in the 70s/80s. I always want to imagine they still live louche, hippy-ish lifestyles, live in remote cottages where the rooms are a fug of joss-stick and are full of dream catchers and paper flowers etc. And they're always barefoot in boho flowing dresses. In reality they no doubt go to Tesco in baggy joggers and worry about the leccy bill like the rest of us.
When my dads mum died my mum was really ill so I didn’t go to school for a while when I went back my dad played this every morning going to school made me have a good mood going to school that was in year 7 and at the end of year 8 I left that school to be home schooled but this song will always be apart of me and my memory of my nan
Ellie totally underrated. What a voice and talent. Loved her voice played her records in the record shop I worked in. Back in the 70 's. Those were the days.
I absolutely love this song. Elkie Brookes was one of the greatest blues singers of our generation and sadly underated. The last bit where she gets all funky is my favorite and the Black guy on the piano just set the whole song on fire. 🔥 😍
Oh .....isn't she wonderful darling Ellkie.......I used to love her in Vinegar Joe.......remember them...Robert Palmer too......just breathtaking music ......xxxxx
Oh my heart. We used to turn the volume up at parties, everyone would sing and swing their sexy dance moves. Great memories this beautiful song evokes all the time.
i totally agree the first part , electric panio bass guitar and drums the second part a six string guitar comes in and the bridge a pedal steel guitar so it all builds up
Elkie can damn sing!!!!! It's a shame we was born 20 years early, or else she'd be bossing these talent shows in early 20000s,,,,my god what a voice ❤x
I remember buying that album aged 12. That's giving my age away though. Cracking album. See what happens when you are looking up house prices in Cumbria? Eventually led me to Ms Brooks!
Found this comment from the bassist - bandbase2 9 years ago I played bass on Elkie's version. Leiber and Stoller produced it.This song was originally written by Dino and Sembello only. Leiber and Stoller added a bridge section in 1976 for Elkie's version. The gospel part at the end of Elkie's version was added by the band spontaneously in the studio. Thanks for posting this!
Going through my old records and found hers, had forgotten how much I liked her. Love her singing this, Fool If You Think It's Over and Don't Cry Out Loud. She had lots of great songs,
My Mum's name was Pearl. She sang in the local operatic dramatic society. Always singing about. Sadly passed away in 2019. But this was one of her favourite songs.
Elkie Brooks - Pearl's A Singer 1245pm 17.9.24 for some reason it struck a chord with me. i used to own the 7inch. lost to grubby pervs... the i heard the song motorcade by magazine, and..... he's distorted enough to have been wise to elkie brooks to have taken such a rhythm and made it magazines... judging by how perverted these folk are you could well be in possession of the 7inch some retard stole from me...

I have just discovered this Lady and this was by accidental veiwing "Finding Your Feet" movie. What a pity that late. What a luck I found her! Amazing!
Happy Birthday Elkie Brooks born on February 25, 1945. She is an English rock, blues and jazz singer. She was a vocalist with the bands Dada and Vinegar Joe, and later became a solo artist. She gained her biggest success in the late 1970's and 1980's, releasing 13 UK Top 75 singles, and reached the top ten with Pearl's a Singer, Sunshine After the Rain and the title track of the album No More the Fool. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elkie_Brooks
I try not to use the statement/saying "Jesus wept", but 'JESUS WEPT'! It really doesn't get much better than this! You go Elkie in such a short and epic song you really moved the listeners. EVERY TIME! N.B even my cat is doing jazz hands 🙀😸🙀
I was 3 when this was released, so long before we form cognitive memories. My mum told me how much I loved this song, and so when she heard me going "Pearl, Pearl, Pearl" she knew what to put on to quiet me down. She even recorded it, repeatedly on a tape, god I am ancient, and when I was fractious at bed time she would put it on and I settled down and was snoring my head off by the time it got to the sixth time.
Love this song my mam was called Pearl who sadly died today rip mam
Forever in our hearts
Sorry for your loss,I know this is a belated message but I lost my mam 3 years ago and it still hurts.
How depressing

Yes flawless she is amazing 👏
Flawless is the only way to describe her, absolutely awesome!
2025 still listening to Elkie . Love her.
In the UK we have so many awesome lady singers that are underrated. The world should realise how good they really are.
In the uk I’d like the queen to die
Ain’t wrong mate, go to the punk days too, X-ray specs polystyrene was great
she is not underrated at all

Down to earth. Real person who lives in the real world. She deserves all the success and longevity her career has brought her.

The best female blues voice the UK ever produced.
Technically - I think this may be one of the greatest songs ever written/performed. Genius.
You're probably right ❤

46yrs ago and it's a timeless classic. Thank you Elkie.
Takes me back to my early married days in south London. Great days that slipped away without noticing they've gone
I can't stop listening to this song. Songs aren't like this anymore...
Called my daughter Pearl, and all the older folk sang this as they met her first time. I didn't know it existed, and I'm now a fan
I lost my nana on the 14th October this was her favourite song she had it as her funeral song such a beautiful song ❤
❤❤❤
There's always one
The best British woman vocalist imo ... always underrated I love her 💕👋👋
But what about Barbara Dixon, Elaine Paige and Bonnie Tyler.

2nd of January 2025 and I’m STILL listening to fantastic timeless music like this.
It's so long since I last heard this track I'd forgotten just how brilliant she is. Xx
It occasionally randomly pops into my head.
Mum's fav, she just passed and I had to select this as one of her songs for the funeral 💔
That's her voice. No autotune, no click track. Eat that @RickBeato!
Remember this as a kid, Ellie is more than just a pop star....much more.
That rasp of hers is frikken deadly. Magnificent
The super cool guy playing the piano is living his best moment...& this song , her voice absolute belter....👍👍
I absolutely love this song. Elkie Brookes was one of the greatest blues singers of our generation and sadly underated. The last bit where she gets all funky is my favorite and the Black guy on the piano just set the whole song on fire. 🔥 😍
Great Voice this Lady has ,she puts a lot of today's average singers to shame.
Remember dancing to this with my (late) wife back in '77/78....as good today as it was then. Brilliant soulful voice....

Beautiful woman with a amazing voice! This could easily be a Elvis song/performance.
Brilliant singer, saw her in 2018 and seeing her again in February this year. What a talent and a lovely lady. Will be taping my feet as well
She is brilliant...what depth to her voice....loved her all those years ago.....still do today as a 70 year old ...this is ageless
