There is a story about the singer who momentarily sang with Prince at his microphone which I read years ago, and have been trying to find tonight but haven't succeeded so far. It was an iconic event.
You Think your a Tough Guy until This tune brings you to Tears. Most soulful performance ever. Prince played for the audience and leaves it all out there.
Prince because my favorite artist of all time from the first moment I heard his music back in 1980. It was March 30th, 1985, Saturday night, me (22 then) and my friends were the usual night out. All night I checked my watch, maybe a hundred times. I would go home earlier than usual that night... Came in my own car, instead of sharing one with my friends. At 04.00AM, RockPalast, a German broadcaster of concerts, would broadcast the Purple Rain tour live from Syracuse... I was so nervous...Left the club at 03.15 and 15 minutes later I was home.. Exactly at 04.00 the connection with NY was made and I was staring at a dark stadium, total silence... After 90-100 seconds it took off... and I was having the best time of my life.. what a show, what a perfection, you could tell he was in charge of every part of the production... Never seen such an amazing live performance... I looked at my watch again, damn... only 20 mins left... But I had not heard the 3, for me, key songs yet... "I would die 4u, Baby, I'm a star and Purple Rain" ... hope he does not skip one of them.. The screen went black and I was in shock, did we lose connection? Then I heard noises from the crowd and Wendy started playing the oh so beautiful starting riff of PR... I was so excited.. then after 3 minutes, Wendy was joined by Himself... beautiful deep dark chords from his Höhner... after a few minutes replaced by Dave Rusan's Cloud guitar..the beginning of what I still consider the best guitar performance in history of music.. All emotions coming out of that guitar went straight through me, I laughed, I cheered, I cried, a lot of the latter... I am witnessing magic, perfection, the best of the best... My God, do I miss him....
The intro went on for over SIX minutes before he even sang the first line. The crowd was hanging onto every moment up until (and after) then. There have been SO few musicians who can captivate the crowd like that. RIP, Your Purpleness.
This guitar solo actually brings tears to my eyes. What a legend. Prince played with all heart and soul, you can not only see it but more importantly, feel it.
That solo is like someone in despair who is trying to reach for something, be it trying to get clean, succeed, finding happiness, etc.. and when they're within reach they'll get knocked back and they will extend their arms with double the effort and reach for it all over again. At least that's how I feel when I hear that guitar solo, like damn you can't stop til you get there.
@@ksut5721 A journalist asked Eric Clapton what it was like being known as the best guitarist in the world, and Clapton answered him with "ask Prince".
Prince's talent as a guitarist got overshadowed by the "persona" he created just as Frampton's guitar talent got overshadowed by his manager's decisions to try to position him as a "teen idol".
Happy Heavenly Birthday to my pops Gary Lee Hinton, a drummer who caught my attention with Prince and the Revolution's "Controversy" in '81/'82. 42 yrs! I'm still missing my pops AND enjoying Prince 🎂🎉🎸🥁

I'd like to interview the people who were there to see what kind of lives they have led. It's grounding and existential at the same time. It's perfection. And he's so effortlessly cool, sexy, humble, and beautiful, god what a beautiful soul! Fucking genius!! We love you PRINCE!!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜 Now go cry and watch this everyone and feel your lives change 🙌🏻🙌🏻🥹🥹
@@mariedevesa8588 Such a fantastic comment! Yes, if it's this mind blowing and soul changing to watch on video I can't imagine what those people felt watching him live. Just 😭. I miss Prince so much!
So many tears at the end of this video. How do replace such an accomplished writer, singer, virtuoso, and performer like this? It can't be done....and the generations after may never know what it's like to stand in the audience and experience a true artist and virtuoso again. Artists with this degree of skill and creativity come along maybe once in a generation, if we're lucky?
This is why he was the revolution, He wouldn't " SELL OUT" to the industry. They tried shutting him down and just couldn't succeed. Micheal Jackson sold out and look what happened to him when he tried getting out, They KILLED him, using the Dr. as a Patsy. Prince paid for all his needs with his own money. They tried taking him down for years by getting venues to refuse his shows on tours and the such but his music was so real people came. People being us, the public. Who knows, I for one don't believe the over dose with fentanyl story, I believe they finally got to him. He was set and gearing up for another world tour and I believe the ENTITY being the big boys behind the scenes had him offed due to Prince showing people success can be reached without paying all the Ticks that suck you dry in the industry. For those that read this comment and think I am a conspiracy nut, are the people that the industry appreciates and counts on to run cover for them. There are always the people that came ahead of you in life that think they need paid for your success that they never did an ounce of work for, It's really bottom line, " Pure GREED"!!!
Just sitting here with mouth open. Didn't move for the last minutes, just got goosebumps all around and tears start to roll. Nearly forgot to swallow and to breathe and was about to drool on the desk. How would you describe something like this to others without sound and video? This is so raw, so passionate, so, well, intimidating because of sheer talent and genius and somehow down to what anything in universe is all about. It's hard to find words for this. So raw, so passionate, so incredible skillful, that it marks and expands somehow the borders of human beings, as no human being could transport that in a ridiculous suit with a ridiculous guitar, but when you are Prince everything falls in place and it feels as natural as it can be. This is way beyond, what any other person I've ever heard of on earth could do. Never seen anything like this and most probably never will. Whoever this strange, little man was: He was much more than a man,., He was Prince. And whatever that is, is more, than we deserved. I feel like every cell of my useless existence is loaded now with his energy. Still. Sometimes he made me think, he is an evolutionary proof of concept of Human 2.0. And although I wrote all this crazy stuff, I still feel speechless. And when I look at this next time, it'll be the same. And again. And again. This will last for ages.
This is the best comment that I could have read to match this video. It’s the first time I’ve seen this particular Prince performance. Absolutely incredible. The guitar playing is beyond comparison.
The word Genius can be said many times. in plenty of times and in spaces where it wasn't worthy... With Prince well yes it was worthy, every single second of every single day. The man and the band was off the scale in every single way. Mind blown all the time.
I’ve been playing for like 6 months and I have no clue how he can play that fast, I don’t even think I could play an open string that fast. Much less make anything sound this good
As a Musician I love metal and all the music forms and I especially enjoy listening and playing with metal heads. I also love drinking and smoking with yall in convo where alot of you say things like what you stated. Because I always wonder what fan of a certain subgenre will think of "this" or "that". In this case, what a metal fan thinks of Prince. As far as musicianship goes, Prince is an above average standard. Alot of us can play more than 1 instrument but to do it on the level of Prince......even RARER.
My sister died in January of this year. May she dance in the purple rain. Thank you Prince for your amazing talent that touched and continues to touch our lives.
Still in love with this song! 🎶 Purple Rain by Prince isn't just music, it's an experience. Decades later, it still resonates deeply, proving that some music truly is timeless. Every time I listen, it’s like hearing it for the first time all over again. Long live the purple legacy! 💜
I am 66 yrs. Old and have listened to alot of music. This song is by far one of best peices of music I have ever heard. Playing it now for the 4th. time in a row. Unreal!!!
I play it every day for years, 2nd best love song of all time. The best is "like a rolling stone". Let's be real, romance is sweet, but women are b*thes, they all bring it to same place in the end
Can't watch too much of this without getting a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. A hundred years from now people will still be utterly amazed at this talented entertainer.
This song is a testament to Prince's unparalleled talent and artistry. He and The Revolution delivered a performance that transcended music itself. Prince's virtuosity on the guitar, his soulful vocals, and the raw emotion in this moment are nothing short of legendary. This isn't just a song; it's a sonic masterpiece that continues to touch hearts and inspire artists across generations. Rest in peace, Prince, your music lives on forever.
Man, you're speaking the truth. I remember seeing Prince open for Rick James like it was yesterday. Even then, you could feel that electric energy, that raw talent just waiting to explode onto the world stage. He was more than just an opener that night; he signaled the future of music. When you see someone make a guitar talk like he did, you know you're witnessing a genius. The man was a prophet in purple, and every time I hear one of his songs, I'm taken back to that moment. You're right; Prince's legacy is immortal. His music, his artistry-they've carved out a space that no one else can fill. Rest in power, indeed.
I was fifteen years young the first time I heard purple rain, I’m 53 now and I can still feel like a fifteen year old when I hear this song. Thank you Prince, you are missed.
35 years. 35 years and we're still able to feel every note of this song. Still sounds great and is possibly one of the most anthemic songs of all time. RIP Prince. You were one of a kind and we'll never see your likes again.
This was such a musical spiritual event . So spiritual that you can still feel the power in it. Close your eyes in a dark room and just listen to this video. Princess soul and what ever he was feeling about this song just cries out like tears. Forgive one another my friends, for give !
How the hell could they leave this man off a list of one hundred greatest guitarists? That’s almost sacrilegious! Prince was the epitome of a performer. May this genius rest in peace and power.❤
This man had so much God given talent! I wish I could’ve seen him play this in person! I will always love Prince! Earth’s loss, Heaven’s gain! Can’t wait to see him one day, playing to the Angels in paradise!
She was so young and this chord progression is a fingerbreaker! Prince credited her for coming up with it. The first chord and you know the song and that's because of Wendy Melvoine.
I'm honestly in awe this video doesn't have over a Billion views. It's quite easily one of the top 10 live performances of any single song in recorded history. That man's soul was on display.
It probably does, overall. It's had been uploaded and taken down so many times prior to Prince's passing that there is no telling what the real number of views is.
The year I graduated me and my mom layed in the sun and listened to Purple Rain. Every time I here Prince I think of that. My Mom has passed. But I still think of us!!!
A year before my graduation my girlfriend and I got invites to a Prince Private Party ( they played ONLY Prince music.) The theme was Psychedelic! The best party I ever attended.

I asked him if he needed a glass of water, but he declined. He said, that he just wanted a break, carrying his grocery bag home. I asked if I could help him and he was a bit hesitant at first, but gave in. When we walked, he told me, that he was 93 years old. He's doing all the house chores, he has a small garden that are kept pristine. Buying groceries are hard for him because he has to carry things home, so I plan on buying him a grocery caddy.
Love your story, what an amazing experience you had. He is truly truly missed, even out here in Africa.
Wonderfully stated and I echo your sentiments. For me this is akin to a religious experience and the Apex definitive guitar performance of all time.

This song is a testament to Prince's unparalleled talent and artistry. He and The Revolution delivered a performance that transcended music itself.
