Led Zeppelin is top 10 in my eyes and had just the right amount of heavy metal. It’s like salt in your cookies… just a pinch, too much ruins the batch. These heavy metal predecessors fell into that trap.. too much salt. I loathe heavy metal…

I was 18, living on the east coast, had just graduated High School, been fired from my job, broke up with my girlfriend, and I was ready for a change. Standing in the shower one day, a thought popped into my head, why are you still here? You’re FREE!! So I decided to move to California. My best friend, and really the first girl I ever loved, took me to the airport and walked me to the gate (when you were allowed to do that). We hugged goodbye, and she gave me a letter, telling me to open it on the plane. As I took off, I opened it (it smelled like her) and read her words. She confessed she had always wished we had been more than friends but she could never take this freedom away from me and she was happy I was leaving to start my life. Then, she had written the words to Going to California. 36 years later, I realize what she gave me. The best memory of the best goodbye I’ve ever had and the doorway to the rest of my life. This song always gives me that memory back right away. Thank you Jean. I hope you’re happy.

There's a great live version of this at Earl's Court in 1975. They would usually do an acoustic set of songs where Page, Plant and Jones sat on chairs in a row and close together. Page would play guitar, and Jones would play mandolin as well as bass with his feet on the organ pedals which can be pulled out to the front of the stage. He learned that as a young man playing a church organ. "That's the Way" is another good acoustic number.

Magical to watch them just sitting in chairs at the edge of the stage singing🎶 Also, from this same concert, another slower acoustic one is 'Thats The Way"🎶 One of their most beautiful songs is "The Rain Song", you wont regret hearing this one🎶🎵🎶💜 Yes, thats Jimmy on guitar and John Paul Jones (bassist) on the mandolin. The irony is that California, for Led Zeppelin, is the place where they absolutely raged, like deranged pirates. The Hiatt Hotel in L.A. was their headquarters on tour out west. The "Riot House," they callled it. The tales of debauchery from Led Zep in that place are legendary.

I LOVE hard Led Zeppelin, but some of my FAVORITE songs are the sleeper tunes less played on the radio, and the soft ones. There are Many, like Stairway to Heaven that have tastes of acoustic and soft vocals combined with hard rock vocals and electric guitar. And yes, I believe virtually ALL guitar heard on any Led Zeppelin Albums was Jimmy Page. There may have been a few exceptions because sit in's were a thing back in the day, but I feel comfortable saying that Page was the main guitarist on all their hits, which is to say all their songs.

You have to listen to a lot of Led Zeppelin to understand that this aspect of them is always there, even on their heavier stuff, if you listen carefully. This particular song and a lot from this, their fourth album and their third came from a cottage called Headley Grange. They were never a 'heavy metal' band but one steeped in blues and folk music. You can tell that from Plant's subsequent career since Zeppelin ended in 1980.
