I feel especially terrible for the sister. She wasn't the favourite despite clearly being a better person than her brother. Everything she did was normal teenage girl stuff, compared to her psycho brother. And she was the one actually getting an education. And she fought for her life until the end. The terror she must have felt. I have a brother and the love i have for him is unmatched, I could not imagine even thinking about hurting him. I hope Menhas rots in jail, and that his last moments are filled with more terror than his four family members combined. If there is no Hell i imagine one could be made just for him.

These stories happens a lot in Asia, though not necessarily results in death of the family. He was the favorite only because he is the son; a daughter never meant much. The sons are always shielded, put on a pedestal, and never to be blamed on; they simply never learnt to grow up, to cope with stress, to face the reality, to let go of self-image. The daughters become rebellious for always being in the “wrong,” always come second and need to prove themselves worthy, struggle with relationships with the family, but are usually the one who grow and take responsibilities to care for the parents when they are old. It happens too much, yet we still don’t learn from it. The sex favoritism is hopeless.

As a Bengali woman living in London, I can 100% attest that the whole favouritism thing is HUGE in the South Asian/Desi communities. Parents, especially the mothers will often smother their sons, particularly their first son as they are seen as more valued than a daughter. Very toxic and outdated, I know. I have experienced this firsthand from my own parents and so have my female peers. Unfortunately their love for the son can be blinding which means they turn often disregard red flags as ‘boys being boys’ and I do think their blinding love for Mehnaz played a huge factor in this.

Not Bangla but I am Desi and I agree that gender norms play a detrimental role. And we need some generational healing in parenting styles, as do other people in other cultures too. As a person who navigated intense parental pressure to be perfect, strict parenting and being the disappointing daughter that was always the "bad kid" no matter how hard I tried to please them, I still never have ever in my life wished harm to my parents. And I can't imagine a world where I myself cause them any physical harm. I am struggling so much to understand the internal thoughts of this human. I lost my dad earlier this year to cancer and I am devastated. I would have done anything to keep him alive. How can someone themselves kill their parents and be alright? How do you get to a place to cause such physical pain and watch your loved ones die? Something is seriously off with this guy.

It’s exactly the same in my mexican family. Misogyny in hispanic households is very normalised. I remember so many times growing up where my brother was kinda “let off”. He could sit down and play video games all day, while I on the other hand was pressured to clean up, do laundry, and study from morning till night. I think it’s a very common thing in ethnic cultures.

@@beyondallcontrolofc smth is wrong with this guy he slaughtered his family. No need to mention that. But i just wanna say(being a desi) what you feel that's cause these desi kids are raised like this, to love and forgive ur parents no matter what. This was put in our head "at the end hes ur father..mother" but yes parents can be wrong & brother they really really suck at their job, parenting. But we wont ever go against them, cuz they freaking sacrifice everything literally. For us. My mom worked so hard for my education (luckily I was a nerd) but not everyone is. Also the fact "we just want u to be happy" ok we get it. But do they know 'where' is our happiness? Do they even try? Why a boy couldn’t tell his parents he failed a simple exam?why he had to kept lying for 3years? And how distant their relation was that nobody had a clue?ok i get it he's very good at hiding OR they really suck at parenting? When i was younger i alwz asked my sister, 'when are we ever going to live our life?', and I still can't. Also they you're forced to accept a religion and ruled you can't show ur face to the world, can't talk to opposite genders etc etc right after birth, that's another thing.

Bangladeshi here. Though it's uncommon for situations like these to end up in a gruesome murder, favoritism is a major issue. Boys grow up being pampered and loved, they never face a reality check and sometimes their parents defend them to the pits of hell (I'm talking rape, assault, etc). Since all their heinous deeds are defended by their parents (usually especially the mother), they continue their shenanigans while the daughter juggles academics, caring for the family, being "quiet" but also social enough, following all the parent's ridiculous rules to a T. And what happens when they grow up? These boys get to marry the girl of their choice if they have one while the girl is usually set up for an arranged marriage even if she has her eyes on someone else/is taken. When the parents grow old, it's the daughter's efforts that causes these parents to still live in a home and not a nursing house while the son leads a carefree nonchalant life after handing over his mom's duties to his wife.
Most modern households don't do this anymore, we've made great progress. But this situation is very common in low income households and lower middle class families. No matter what you do, you will simply never be enough.

In traditional Asian culture, males are the pride of the family because they are expected to carry on the family line.
Females are usually the "commodity", where they were "sold" off to the other family.
The parents probably still had the old fashion mindset and they probably also treated Menhaz differently from his sister and was probably more pressured to excel in life (also a way for parents to "show off" they have a capable son by talking about his achievements)
And that is also why his sister will always play the 2nd fiddle, even if it was proven she excelled more than Menhaz did because she will eventually be "sold off".

I think it’s the other way around. People with dark thoughts and impulses will end up joking about it because it just spills over into their real life. It’s a red flag. The jokes aren’t the cause, but the symptom. Plenty of people joke in a dark way and aren’t violent, especially if they’ve been through traumatic events themselves- it’s a common way of processing it

I used to use discord a lot a while back and in the group that I was prominent in there was a boy who would make comments about being depressed and stuff, and although he never mentioned anything to me privately(we weren’t close), I was close with some of the group members who knew him personally and who would later tell me that he was in a very dark mental state. Sadly, the boy took his own life. So now whenever I see comments regarding these things I will take the time to message the person and try to comfort them in any way I can. Yes, speaking to someone online is different than irl, but it really could help someone.

it doesn't sit right with me how he also took pictures of them afterwards, as if it was funny almost? he genuinely is so disconnected to not even think "that's my dead mother/dead sister" etc. when taking them, in no way devastated or effected by what he did.

As a male asian who has a little sister , I can 100% confirm the favoritism thing is actually true but what people do not understand is actually how such a practice not only harms the daughter but the son as well . I absolutely suck at adulting , have a ton of self esteem issues and am honestly incapable of dealing with any kind of social situation . I even used to have anger issues . I am not saying that the males suffer more then the females or something stupid like that but well we still do get harmed . Favoritism is bad for both the favored and unfavored and the favored still suffer even though the unfavored suffer more . I am genuinely proud of my sister because she is a talented, nice (kinda ), smart and hard working girl . I would not trade her for the world .

I spent some of my childhood in Markham and live in the Greater Toronto Area and had never heard of this case. How awful. I'm glad the photos were never leaked. It's wild how he jumped to this conclusion. My brother and I grew up with a lot of academic pressure (I myself dropped out of York U in 2016) but that shame was always internal and never involved a thought about harming anyone else just to escape further embarrassment. He really could have given up the ruse and dealt with the consequences. Instead, because of the preoccupation with his own future he still could have improved at any point, he had to steal the future of his entire family.

@@trumpetbylousflwr5437 I totally understand the sentiment here- I just want to clarify that I'm Asian myself, so I'm not sure that statement is as objective as you framed it. I immigrated to Canada when I was four. There are very much unhealthy and abusive patterns across Asian cultures, but I don't think making broad blanket statements are helpful when building this context. My own parents came from abusive households and they are by no means perfect, but they've learned and unlearned a lot of their harmful behaviour.
What I meant by the shame being internal is that my brother and I were a lot harder on ourselves than our parents were. I recognize that's not the case for every Asian household, and in fact, it wasn't until the last six years that my parents eased up on the pressure, but I think it's extremely counterproductive to perpetuate the myth that Asian parents are monolithic and by their very nature, horrible. The truth is far more complex than that.

      @trumpetbylousflwr5437 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@mikaelalucido well, i am sorry you had to go through that experience. that must have been horrible. I agree there are good parents in our community too, but there is enough evidence to believe that im not perpetuating a "myth". that is very hurtful. hearing about how your parents have attempted to unlearn their behaviour is something that majority of the asian children can only imagine. So, i disagree with the fact that majority of the asian parents are good and accepting. I agree that they are on the rise, but you cannot say that they are the ones in the majority.

I mean, the amount of preparation (physically and mentally) shows that he knew exactly what he was doing and had planned it for a very long time. However, the fact that taking his own life wasn't part of his plan really adds another layer to this. It seems like he snapped, but that can't really be true if he was planning this for so long. He planned on going to jail for this, so maybe he wanted a more structured life that would forcefully pull him away from his game. The plan to go to jail is the part that's really got me thinking because often family annihilators plan to either take their own lives or try to frame someone else.

For a year, I was doing hardcore raiding in a game called ESO. I was on discord calls with 4 to 12 people constantly playing, raiding 6 to 14 hours a day. Even if you do have a lot outside of the game that you love, the game takes over. It becomes your life and rules your life. Those people are the most important to you and those who know you the best. In my case we were trying to get the highest achievements for raiding, no death hardmode speedruns, topping the North America servers for score on each raid etc. My worth was my worth as a team member and possibly team leader depending on the group. It’ll really mess you up. I had to get help after I decided to leave because of the toxic environment.

To add to my perspective: There were a couple of people in my circles in ESO that acted like Menhaz, very offensive, often kicked from teams or servers, etc. I am so glad we never had anything this bad happen to our knowledge. But a couple of folks on there would be good for it… I wouldn’t be surprised to see them in a headline that’s all I’ll say. People on the internet are not usually to be trusted, so be careful if you’re reading this!
