A trauma response especially in children is to block out things like a parent being sexually assaulted so it's not a surprise he doesn't remember that part
very true, i remember the right before of my csa and the rest is completely not there, I was 3 at the time im 19 now and i STILL remember no more of it than i did after the incident.
not to mention he wasn't even 3 so he shouldn't even be able to remember anything yet

I don’t think Alex was knocked down entirely when his Mom was murdered. Possibly, his consciousness deliberately blocked him from remembering such traumatic incident for his well being.
If I'd been the dying mother that would have been my one and only last prayer. To protect his young soul as much as possible 😣

A lot of people think that if they experience something so tramautic they will remember even if they were young. However, even though it is not 100% proven. I took psychology and as a task I was told to research how trauma affect memory. I read many articles but one that was done by a university explain it well. They found the brain release chemicals when someone experience something traumatic. Which I would describe them as arousal. Too much of this arousal will affect memorization.
They found that people who experienced something really traumatic they couldn't recall it.
While this still needs some research on how exactly trauma affect someone's ability to recall it. But in hence, too much trauma will affect someone's ability to recall the traumatic event. Or are not able to remember it all. Which would be called dissociative amnesia. Where the brain will block out information of a certain event that is associated with stressful and/or traumatic event. So the person may remember to the trauma but may not recall important detail of the trauma.
I don't doubt that having your mother killed and assaulted in front you is traumatic in general. But it is even more traumatic when you are child. It is more stressful and more traumatic.
I don't doubt that Alex's brain must have decided to block important information that Alex wouldn't be able to recall to share with investigators.
No one really forgets trauma. Traumatic memories would be really hard to erase. But someone still remember the trauma itself and be affected by it.
Which we hear the Alex couldn't tell investigators important details of his mother's murder. But he held a pencil in a way someone will hold a knife and jabbing it repeatedly and quickly. And eventually give details of the suspect. Even if it was vague.
So, he forgot details of the trauma but was still affected by it.
Well the thing is in his description he says he was pushed to the ground and then he got up from the ground. If he had blocked it out, he would have been pushed to the ground and then ended up in a different place, not knowing what had happened inbetween. What would be more likely is he was young so just doesn't remember.
@@rosa3299 I had a traumatic childhood, I tried to get help when I was 11 from the school counselor, I always remembered going to her and giving her all the details I had and her never doing anything to help, after that(at this point I was out of the situation but needed therapy) I blocked out all of my childhood up until I went to her, at 16 I started getting flash backs, in my early 20s I had a flash back of what I think was my first attack from a man, I remember every detail, smell and feeling, I was 2 years old, so we block it until our brain deems it safe to process.
There should be laws against reporters going after people who have already been thru horrors. That's so twisted to think to interview a baby who watched his mom and best friend, his soul mate be brutally murdered and raped. I know that kind of bond. That's me and my son.
There are laws, they just didn’t pay attention to that.
I wouldnt call a parent a soul mate because that sounds kind of like emotional incest, but the fact he had to witness something so brutal is horrific.

@oxy I know it's weird to say it like that, but soulmate doesn't always mean romantic. Sometimes it just means that someone has like another human that just gets them, like a best friend or mother.
Maybe her son dissociated during that portion of the attack he doesn’t remember. The mind is a powerful protector..

@Lotte i think that his mind is blocking out what really happened and when he gets triggered or reminded of the event his body reenacts what he saw. its really common. they dont think of it or remembers what happens but their body does. its a form of ptsd
The way the police handled this case and how the media portrayed it heavily influenced my dissertation about tabloid newspapers. I've not seen anyone else cover this case and already know you'll do it justice. Glad it's a three-parter because of just how much depth you'll need to go into!

How can those people care so much more about their jobs and money than this toddler's life?!? It's sickening and I doubt they felt any guilt at all.

I found myself thinking I am almost angrier at them and their disgusting unfeeling behaviour than I was at the perpetrator which is of course ridiculous but I think it’s because we’d already had the shock of hearing what that poor boy went through and couldn’t imagine anyone reacting and behaving the way those journalists did towards him in those moments. So awful.

I'm glad he was 'there' enough to respect his sons desire to live and I'm so glad that Alex answered 'correctly' it's a tragic enough story without adding a murder/suicide.

i literally swear after hearing it... and my mom's eyes became as big as saucers... she didnt know what i was listening coz i had headset on.

The fact that Alex remembered anything is impressive. He was such a small baby. 😔 My father was killed when I was 8, and I don't remember anything for a year after his funeral. I now have a 9 year old son, and I couldn't imagine his mother's fight and fear trying to keep living so that she could be there to raise her child!

Sorry for your loss, memory loss is a trauma response and completely normal, and with circumstances, it’s probably your brain trying to save you❤ if it’s something you wanted to remember then you can go to therapy and have hypnotherapy to remember. How compassionate for emergency services to decide to let him rest like that, that's genuinely such a good idea, it would let his little mind start to process this horrific trauma.
Just hearing about how this child picked up his mother's things and placed them back in her pocket after the attack had already pulled at my heart strings, but then he tried to make her better by using the receipt as a plaster? I actually nearly cried. That poor boy :(

The fact that alex and the boyfriend is going through this living hell and yet the media still acts that way disgusts me
I have absolutely never cried at a true crime case. This case broke me into tears when you talked about Alex trying to wake up Rachel and fix her up. I could never imagine going through that when you're just two years old, especially them being so close. I love my mother so, so much and anything happening to her is devastating for me, but nothing could have me recover from what Alex had gone through.

Alex could've just repressed the memory of the actual assault, sometimes your brain will purposely forget events that are too traumatic to cope with.
Exactly. And even if he wasn't concussed, being thrown down like he was might have stunned him for a few minutes. He might have also been unable to distinguish a sexual assault from the rest of the killing.

one thing that i was thinkingabout was that even thought eleanor mentioned how this very strongly appeared to be a "random attack", if rachel and her son visited the park often, she could have very well encountered a stalker... thoughts?
That’s actually a good theory and sorta makes sense since she did go there often. I also think that the attacker might have to know their way around the park to know what trails there our and where the lake was located so he could cleanse himself.
it feels very very personal, and possibly they could’ve just been a rando cause there wasn’t many people out, right? like easier to get someone. but you don’t exactly know who’s gonna be coming or who’s far behind, with rachel/a stalker situation i think they would’ve known. do you think they followed her in and thats when they chose her? or did she go down that path often? it seems like it could be some demented fucker just taking the perfect opportunity to get their sick way, or a stalker. im only 30 minutes in so,, dont mind this if something doesn’t hold up, many many questions. just from this episode it feels straight forward so i’m sure a lot awaits

The attacker must of knew her to inflict that type of frenzied attack. That’s personal it takes a lot of strength and anger for 40+ stab wounds
I think that was Rachel speaking through Alex when Alex looked at his dad and said that he would still want to wake up. She wanted them to be okay without her. And I believe that Alex wasn't alone with Rachel's body , Rachel was still there spiritually comforting him in those moments. This story is absolutely heartbreaking. 💔

Her son was interviewed on this morning a few years ago and he is an absolutely lovely very stable, kind and articulate man, I hope he is doing well. I'm sure his Mum would be so proud.

The British press played a hand in princess Diana’s death as well as Amy Winehouse in many ways... so it doesn’t surprise me that they were unrelenting with this young child 😔
Thinking about how Alex, in the aftermath of such a horrific event, unknowingly had both his and his fathers lives placed in his hands just breaks me. Clearly Andre was not mentally well, and of course I’m very glad that he chose for himself and Alex to live, but Alex’s little mind couldn’t even begin to comprehend how he was at the mercy of the whim of the adults around him. No child should ever have to experience that.

Its one of my biggest fears. Where I pass, my son is left alone, or trying to wake me, and cant. Hes 23 and autistic. It terrifies me where he will go, who will care for him.
I know this will sound invasive, but please let me know if you’d like me to help you find resources. There are programs in some places that help disabled adults with stuff like this free of charge. It wouldn’t be anticipating your death so much as setting up a support system for him if something does happen.

The way Alex was after the murder of his mother literally shattered me. I’ve never been very effected by the relatives grief statements but just this innocent boy trying his best to heal his mother made me want to cry.

The press in any country is disgusting. The grieving family becomes a spectacle for that week and the press just publicies their pain in every possible way. Then, they get no punishment for what they have done. Freedom of Press is important, but the boundaries are very blurred. There needs to be hard punishments when the line is crossed.
The fact that there are still so many cases in this world and those are only the solved, is terrifying.
I really dig how much you focus and personalize the victims. A detached more scientific view of these cases are usually plentiful [and that's a great thing, that's what you want in the investigation and study of a case] but you always seem to focus more on what the people involved [often including the investigators] felt and what they were going through. I like the perspective you focus on, both a scientific and empathetic view of any event is important.

It's literally the fact that her boyfriend was considering killing himself and Alex because she was gone. That's one of the most heartbreaking things I've heard in these cases.

The press is the enemy of the people. Always has been and always will be. This is a fact for every western nation. Not just Britain. Too easily corrupted and, in modern times, very easily controlled by corporations.
“Journalists” are also high up on the list of desired professions of sociopaths.
It's unfortunately a result of the British public who loves to read about this kind of stuff in their tabloids. If people were against this kind of reporting, reporters wouldn't behave like this.

I don't usually cry listening to these stories, but when Alex said "I would want to wake up", I literally started sobbing
im crying at the he picked up his mummys things and tries to put them in her pockets for her. When i was little my dad used to beat my mum infront of me and sometimes when i was 4-7 id try and help her like picking up a broken vase that broke during a fight and say ‘do you want me to help fix this?’ or try and get her to smile because i thought when she smiled it meant she was better. Im 16 now and my dads in jail and me and my mum are doing so much better

The Function of Beauty website does not contain a clear list of the ingredients in their products, so if you have any allergies then please contact them to ask if their products are safe for you.
I'm allergic to coconut and didn't see coconut specified as an ingredient anywhere so I nearly ordered from them. However, I still felt unsure so I contacted Function of Beauty to ask if their products are free of coconut. Unfortunately despite the ingredient appearing anywhere on their product pages, all of their products contain coconut oil, so all are unsafe for me.
So if you have ANY allergies to ingredients that are likely to be in beauty products then PLEASE contact them, as they don't have clear ingredient lists on their website. I was so close to ordering and without that niggling doubt I would've used these products and developed a severe allergic reaction.

True, FOB is known for well being overpriced shit that is no different. Even the claims about hair growth and stuff are lies from experiments with rats, its just bs overpriced stuff plus many have commented about lack of transparency with ingredients inc silicone and allergies

@@kyleighwhite1409 You're welcome. I'm sure you're finding as well that the coconut oil craze has resulted in a lot of beauty products now containing coconut. It never used to be much of a problem until it became it became the new "magic" ingredient. I'm glad that I was able to help 🙂
@@amemelia So true. By law in a lot of countries they're required to declare the ingredients. Here in the UK there's an additional law that means that there's a list of common allergens that have to put in bold in the ingredient list. But nowhere on their website do they have a list of all the ingredients. They have an option to choose a silicon free version of their products now, but only after criticism. It's like they're not declaring the ingredients because they're trying to hide something. So many people have allergies and many die from allergic reactions every year. It's almost inevitable that Function of Beauty's failure to provide a full ingredient list will result in fatal allergic reactions, if people haven't already lost their lives because of this. I doubt they'll change and declare the ingredients though.
I once worked in a local news station (I'm from a different country btw) and listening to Eleanor and hearing about these things the media did to this poor kid was so disgusting to me. Back when I was working for the media, if we could avoid using ANY footage of a child, we would avoid it like the plague. But if it's unavoidable, or the story revolves around the kid, the filter for it was so incredibly strict. We're not allowed to use footage or image of the child that shows any kind of unique feature let alone their entire face. We can only use footage of their hands, or an eye, or in unavoidable cases, just blur everything. But these SOBs my goodness. DISGUSTING.

i'm thinking that maybe it's not that her son was knocked out, but that it was so traumatic that his brain refuses to let him remember the attack. there's no way to know for sure ofc but when you have a traumatic childhood event your brain takes steps to protect your mental state and block out memories it knows will harm you
Also he was so incredibly young. I don’t remember anything before the age of like 5 and he remembers so much despite being 2. I feel as if even if he did witness it the likelyhood of him remembering (or in the case of sexual assault) even understanding what he was seeing enough for his brain to make a note of it would be very slim. All he knew was mummy was being attacked but he’s a child, how is he to know there’s more than one way to be attacked/assaulted.

As a mom of an almost 2 year old boy, my heart literally broke hearing about her son. My biggest fear is not being here to protect my child.
I've never cried from hearing a case, ever. But this did it. As a DV abuse survivor, and my at the time 3 year old daughter seeing it and trying to help me afterwards - this is heartbreaking. She died terrified not knowing what the fate of her son was and he witnessed this. This is atrocious. I can't wait to finish this and hear what happened with her case cause....man. i want Vengence.

I’m not a DV abuse survivor. This case isn’t even about that, but as a Mom of 2 kids who seem like they were 2 YESTERDAY, I hope they send this killer to TEXAS where we believe in the Death Penalty, rarely reverse convictions of guilty people and carry out the execution within 10yrs usually.

My mum went to a dance camp with Rachel Nickell when she was very young but she still remembers how nice and caring Rachel was, this case is so sad
I love that everyone that is listening to this case knows how just horrible this is. No kid should have to go through that. I know personally my mind has pushed out things from when I was a kid that was way too hard for me to cope with as a kid. My siblings even remember some stuff that I do not. This case is horrible and I can almost relate to him. Except the roles we switched. My dad almost got killed because he was a single dad and everyone hated him for taking us away from our abusive mom. No body should ever have to witness their parents being hurt or killed at all in their life. This case brought me to a straight sob for hours. I hope he is well now.

I went to school with someone who also witnessed his mother's murder when we were both about two or three (so around 1995 or 1996) and he was... a very damaged little boy.

Plus, the receipt on Rachel's forehead absolutely breaks my heart. For Rachel to lose her life like that is so disturbing and heartbreaking. RIP Rachel ❤️ I hope she's with Alex everyday, watching over her son 😭❤️

this is such a sad case, i really feel for the poor girl and i remember when it happened. i was actually doing my own digging about it recently but I couldn’t find too much information. i understand laws and child protection etc but the fact that her killers are never allowed to be named despite the absolutely horrific treatment she endured makes me sick. i don’t care how old her killers are and what Ireland’s laws are like, they don’t deserve to be protected as children!!

@@mykarma4345 Yes. A " blocking". It's like if you were to record a show to a DVR and for some reason the recording was interupted. You realise parts are missing, but there's no record of those parts. The memory is such an interesting part of the brain. Shock or simply not being able to verbalize what you see can cause these interuptions. Even with the visual not making an imprint on his memory, he may still have imprinted smells or sounds that will later manifest in anxiety or panic attacks later in life.
The fact that he was stabbing pictures with crayons tells me he was awake and aware, but had no way to verbalize any of it. He was only 2, almost 3. A toddler's vocabulary isn't developed yet. How would he even know what murder or SA are. He didn't know what stabbing was.
This poor baby who likely never witnessed anything but kindness until that moment. To be the only witness that the police had, that adds to the tragedy, doesn't it?
