    It’s been fascinating watching this case because in the early TH-cam true crime years their bodies weren’t found yet and people had all kinds of theories they really believed in. Then it turned out to be the absolute worst case scenario. Just tragic and infuriating.

    Ya'll my grandma calls me every morning to make sure I'm up for work since its one of my biggest fear that I will over sleep and miss work, (especially when I was working and in school full time and sleep was minimal) It's really sweet, I get to talk to her every morning. anyway...I called out sick to work one time because I was feeling like trash. I texted my grandma to let her know, but in my sick sleep state, I didn't actually hit send and it was the rare night where I somehow didn't plug my phone in before bed, thinking it was charged enough. I didn't answer her wake up call, because my phone died and then the next thing I know my co worker is knocking on my door (I work at an apartment community that I live at) because I didn't answer and even tho my work told her I called out sick she was so worried that something bad had happened to me.. long story short, grateful that if I go missing someone is going to know ASAP lol...

    Im still confused about the logistics of this case though. Where was the family actually killed? Police apparently let the family of the victims inside where they cleaned up and took things from the home. If summer, Joseph, and the kids were bludgeoned there would be blood everywhere!! And there wasn’t any in the house? Did chase get all the 4 of them to another location and kill them there? But then how would one person be able to control a group of 4 people like that? I believe the chase killed the mcstay family but I don’t understand how it happened.

I’m not sure why he decided to use a sledgehammer, but I truly feel he used some sort of weapon to lure them out of the home. I don’t understand why the police did such crappy police work! I’m not even an expert and knew immediately he was involved through one of his media interviews! It’s just like with Chris Watts!

    • @ambermullenax8186
      @ambermullenax8186 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@time2livelife he could have cleaned up, but that entire home was white and they were killed with a sledgehammer. IF he had in fact killed them in the house, there should have been some cast off somewhere on the ceilings… something in the carpets or underneath on the floor… of course, the police did crappy police work, so we truly don’t know for sure.
      I just feel they left alive because it would NOT be easy to transport 4 dead bodies out of a home without someone seeing something… plus, they died in such a messy and brutal way. Blood evidence should be inside the outside the house, and in the vehicle.

The brother not calling the police right away, getting into the home and getting the computer, like out of the things why that? They did cleaned the house, reason there was no signs of blood anywhere. Maybe they were not even murdered in the house, but how could one men carry all 4? and if he had a gun, why not use it to carry out the murders instead of a sledgehammer? The other guy Dan sold the company right after, which makes me believe they all had something to gain.

    I worked for Charles Merritt’s defense attorney shortly after this trial ended. Bella did an amazing job with the details of this case, basically everything was spot on.
    I truly believe Merritt is innocent, that is my opinion.
    Joseph’s family is not as close as they were made out to be. There was actually a lot of jealousy between Joseph and his brother Michael. I’d like to know what Michael did with Joseph’s computer when he had it. There was a lot of favoritism from the court in the trial towards the prosecution, including prosecutorial misconduct.
    Dan Kavanaugh actually sold Joseph’s company shortly after they went missing and was in Hawaii for a while, then went MIA for a long time. There was 3 DNA samples found on the sledge hammer that were never tested. The phone tower satellites where Merritt’s phone pinged were actually on opposite sides, therefore his phone would have pinged where his sister lived, not near the grave sites.
    There is a pretty good docuseries on Discovery+ called Two Shallow Graves. It gives a lot of insight on the trial and the animosity between the DA and defense. You can also watch days of the trial on Law and Crime Network.

    I feel like if the case wasn't turned over to the FBI, there's a very high chance that the case wouldn't have been solved and would continue to be unsolved. Chase wouldn't be in prison right now either. I think Joseph told Chase he would turn him in for embezzlement was most likely the stepping stone and the motive for the crime. But I also think there was another motive as well. He was borrowing money from him and he wouldn't have been able to pay him back ever, so he thought if Joseph was out of the picture, he can continue working at the business and also won't have to pay all the money back. It's so sad that he didn't just kill his work partner and friend but also his wife and children. How messed up is that? I think he murdered the rest of the family, so they won't be witnesses to what happened to Joseph. It's just so heartbreaking. I don't understand how he could do something that horrific. What did the little ones ever do? Their lives couldn't be spared at least? I'm glad this case was finally solved and the person responsible for the gruesome crime is behind bars and will never get out. He's on death row but sadly it would never happen because in California, our current governor abolished the death penalty so all the inmates awaiting their execution date will continue to live on and spend the rest of their loves in prison.

    I was still pretty young when this case hit the news originally, but I remember so clearly my mom standing in front of the TV looking at CCTV footage and just shaking her head. (She didnt think it was enough, especially with two young kids invovled) Definetly one of the first cases I remember news coverage of

    I had a neighbor that gave verbal permission to authorities to break into her mothers home because none of family members heard from or neighbors(me included) seen the elderly woman for 2 days. Her daughter told authorities to get into her moms house by any means necessary and authorities did it. They didn’t have to wait for search warrant. Sure enough my elderly neighbor was found dead on floor beside her bed. I guess each situation is different but this is a entire family and I’m sure most likely family members have verbal permission yet authorities used the search warrant excuse

    This is scary! I live in Mexico with my 4 year old and his father and my family lives in Los Angeles. We have gone 10 days without speaking to anyone so I didn’t see that weird but Chase saying Joseph was being poisoned by his wife and that they were having problems should have been THE red flag that should have put him behind bars from the beginning.

    A note about the death penalty in California and many other states. It still exists in law but there is a moratorium on actually carrying it out. Unless that changes, it's a penalty in name only. There are about eleven states which have carried it out within the last ten years.

    i honestly why but i’ve always thought that chase didn’t do it alone. killing 4 people by yourself and burying them without being noticed has to be difficult. considering mf didn’t even do his own job well, it’s hard to believe he did all that without assistance. plus i feel like killing 2 children with a sledgehammer isn’t something an average person is capable of. it seemed like when LE connected the dots, they didn’t try to tie up loose ends. they were like yep it was this mf, case closed. the whole thing just feels unfinished, but that’s how it is sometimes. i just think they could’ve gone further. it’s interesting that chase didn’t blame anyone else. i would assume it was a planned thing he got help for, but he could just be extremely thorough.
