    Learning how to punch is one thing. Learning how to land punches is another. Want to land more punches?
    Whether you're sparring or in a real fight, there's one bad habit that will keep you from landing punches-leaning.
    I call it "Riding the See Saw" because people rock back and forth when they punch and kick. It shows up three different ways...
    See Saw #1: Leaning forward when you punch.
    This is a huge mistake for many reasons. First, you’re offering your head to the bad guy on a silver platter.
    Second, you’re opening up your low line to punches, kicks, and takedowns.
    Third, you’re setting yourself up for being snapped down or pulled off balance.
    But it's the fourth problem that will keep you from landing punches. When you lean forward, your weight gets stuck on your front foot.
    So, even if you connect with your first punch, you’re not in position to follow up! To throw another punch, you either have to fall forward or you pull back into your stance and start over.
    The answer to this problem? Stay in your stance and use your footwork to drive in-don't be lazy. When you stay in your stance, you're not only protecting yourself, you’re on balance and in position to keep throwing flurries of punches.
    See Saw #2: Leaning backwards when you punch.
    No, I’m not talking about fading and snapping back on purpose. I’m talking about holding your head back while throwing your hand forward. What's the problem with that?
    First, you shorten your reach. Second, you reduce your power. Your arm is going one way, your body the other.
    To be frank, leaning forward and backward during a fight is a tough habit to break, because it’s usually rooted in fear... either the fear of committing your body into the fight or the fear of being hit in the face.
    How do I know?
    Watch people hit the mitts or a heavy bag and, unless they’re being lazy, they typically stay in their stance and practice good form. But once punches start flying during sparring or self-defense drills, fear holds back the hips and tips back the head. In short-
    No one leans back when no one’s hitting back.
    See Saw #3: Leaning back when you throw kicks.
    This one is tricky because some martial artists deliberately lean back to counter-balance their raised leg. They See Saw on purpose!
    Some folks even drop their head to the ground so they can even kick straight up over their head, which is a great move if you’re ever being attacked by a barn owl.
    But here’s the thing-if you want to land punches, it's best to keep your hands in punching range. When you lean back to counter-balance a kick, you take your hands out of punching range.
    Leaning back adds a beat into the timing of your follow-up punches after a kick. Instead of KICK PUNCH PUNCH, you end up throwing KICK beat PUNCH PUNCH. That beat is the time it takes to get back into your stance to throw punches.
    Now, that little beat may not seem like a big deal, but believe me-it's everything! Against a good fighter, one little beat is all the time he or she needs to play their trump card.
    The fix? Stay in your stance. Crunch down when you kick and keep your hands in punching range at all times.
    So, get off the See Saw and stop leaning. I guarantee you’ll throw better punches, get hit less, and land more punches than ever before.

      Hannibal Bastian Sure! But not as a strategy to land more punches in an offensive combo or to land more powerful punches. As a defensive strategy or in counter-punching, leaning absolutely has its place. Until, like Anderson Silva, you run out of room to lean back!

      +Ando Mierzwa I know it's a very old video. But I got to ask. When I was training karate, it was damn near impossible to get a punch in, because kicking is more effective. A leg can reach further than a punch. A kick has more force than a punch. So unless you are very flexible and training yoga, then how do you want to kick somebody in the chest if you don't lean back a little? Also, you shouldn't need more than one well-placed kick to set your opponent out of the fight. You might open yourself up by leaning back, but I only see the problem if you are fighting multiple opponents, since if you are fighting only one, then most guys goes down if they get a foot in their solar plexus, but most people needs to lean back a little to place a kick that high. I mean there must also be a reason for why so many systems teaches the lean-back stance. Karate, muay thai, taekwondo, kickboxing, kung-fu..

  • @blazetieftw

    The only time I lean in training, sparring or in a tournament is if I quickly dodge a punch or kick that I don’t have time to step away from.

    When I took Kenpo, I would catch myself leaning all the time. inevitably, I broke my arm because of it, my sparring partner didn't even mean to do it. But, it goes to show how easy it is to lose your balance and power from see-sawing.
    I fixed it by just following through with my punches and kicks. Imagine you are punching through the target, rather than at it. It gives a lot more power to your strike.

      Absolutely, Gabriel! Setting up a kick with punches is a fundamental skill. Of course, if you're leaning on the set-up, the kick will suffer! Thanks for the tip!

    Sound advice on punching. But that bit you said about not leaning during a kick - I don't 100% agree on that. I'll explain. If done for the wrong reason like fear or lack of flex/balance it's bad. If it's done so to keep your center of mass over your contact point with the ground then it's a tool to make the kicks much faster. If you can expand instead of having to locomote, you can throw it a lot faster. I used to spare with people who would absolutely smoke me with their kicks and they showed me how to do it. You just have to get used to the hit-or-miss factor so a high hung heavy bag should be used to train it.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      That's a great point, Max. I not only agree, I'll take it a step further.... anything you do on purpose is okay. Anything you do without being aware of it? That's trouble. That's because every choice has a pro and a con. Weighing those pros and cons and making a decision is how you create your art. So, lean away! I lean sometimes, too. But I do it on purpose and I know what I'm giving up in the trade. Thanks for bringing that up! A very helpful comment, sir!

      @maxc101 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Ando Mierzwa Awesome! Glad you can see my point. I'm a speed freak! I'm currently studying extremes of the human body in the area of speed and reflexes. It feels like we can go much faster than most people think.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Max C I wish there was an easier way to measure speed. I always think I'm figuring out a way to move faster, but can't prove it! Good luck!
