Hello Sensei. I am a 2nd degree black belt in North American Freestyle/Shotokan/Gojo Ru Karate, and have been training for the past 18 years. I have also spent many years training in judo, ju jitsu, and golden gloves boxing. I agree with you 100%....talking your way out is ALWAYS the best route, but if you have no other choice you have to defend yourself! Having said that I would never kick to the head in a street fight unless I was 110% sure that I was not leaving myself at risk. I would use my kicks defensively to keep distance and stick to kicking to the body/legs. I would also set up any kicks with hands first, keep good head movement, and change levels to keep them guessing on a take down. A lot of people watch UFC, or Strike Force and think "that's the way I would fight in the street". What they fail to realize or forget is that those fights are always one on one in a controlled environment ( ref, rules, padded floor etc....). Any way I love the videos and all the content....keep it up!!

Fact is 90% of the kinds of people you encounter in a street fight aren't gonna be black belts, boxers, martial artist, etc. The majority of the time they're intoxicated or can't throw a proper jab/cross much less a kick.
What you should be looking out for is if they have a knife or a buddy sneaking up behind you to sucker punch your ass cause that happens A LOT in a street fight.

My 5 kicks for street fights are... in order of most used to least used:
5)side kick to either lower torso or knee
    4) round kick to either legs, balls(depends on the angle) ribs or head
    3) spining jumping back kick while retreating as a defense to a charging oponent usually aimed at the body
2)hook kick to the face(it lands pretty often because i use it after soamming the side kick to the body and leg, so... They expect a low kick and it comes high
    1)axe kick to the head...
    Handstrikes i use are:
    5)jab
    4)straight
    3)reverse punch
    2)"karate chop"
    1)sumo palm strike...
    Takedowns and throws:
    5) simple shotokan style ashibarai when the other guy walks in
    4)sumo style kotenage
    3)aikido style ude gaeshi
    2)osoto gari
    1)ura nage
(Next one would be seoi nage... List shows the things i use the most, not everything i use)
For ground grappling i dont do it on streetfights because its useless..m 99.999% of streetfights were i live involve 3 or more people... Wich is also the reason why all the throws i use except for uranage let you stay on your feet after using it... Ura nage is just so brutal that i ude it when there is only one more oponent... But .. in sparring i use:
5)ude garami(americana, same movement used for the aikidostyle ude gaeshi but from the ground)
    4)juji gatame(armbar)
    3)hadaka jime(rear naked choke)
    2)mae hadaka jime(guillotine)
1)ashi-hishigi(dont remember the english name but its an ankle lock)
In order of use in streetfights... I usually spam kicks to the legs until the other person cant move very fast attack with hands when they get too close for me to kick... And throw only if they manage to get a grip on me... so... I use mostly kicks...

Im not saying i do it THAT well but i do it well enough that i can use it against the typical random thug wannabes that start fights in pubs, the streets, parties or any other place like that...
To give an idea of what level of a fighter i am... Im not a blsckbelt in any style, and any blackbelt would kick my ass... Ive fought against a semi pro mma fighter and he kicked my ass... But at the same time of all the times ive fought to defend myself only once did i lose and was because i got sucker punched... The world is not full of skillful fighters... Most people who start fights on the streets are not real fighters ...

Some guys were waiting for us. I was all of 145lbs. My best friend was fighting the biggest dude out there, about 250lbs. So I ran up behind him and punched him in the back of the head as hard as I could. He fell forward and my friend punched his head back to me. We boxed his big ass head back and forth about 4 times. Then 3 people grabbed my friend from behind and pulled him down, and that big mfer turned around and grabbed me up. He just suplexed the biggest guy in my crew the weekend before. I thought I was dead. So I went dead weight, then as soon as I got low enough I shot at him and drove him about 15 ft away from the brawl and we rolled. He came up standing over top of me and I was on one knee. He slung some hammers down on my head about 3 times. I knew 1 more was probably going to sleep me. He had his legs spread eagle, so I pulled my right arm in and threw an upward elbow directly into his nut sack. His immediate reaction was letting me go and saying, "I don't want to fight anymore.". I was fixing to hit him in the face and a bouncer tackled me like Warren Sapp knocking my shoe into the air. If I'm fighting out of my weight class you can frown all you want.

Great tips! 90% of the kicks I land when sparring is a simple jam front kick at waist level. It works best to use it in conjunction with good boxing skills as a counter when they are too busy watching your hands, and even then just as a distance management tool more than for damage (though sometimes when well timed it can knock the air out of someone). This and muay thai leg kicks are really all you should be doing kick-wise in a fight "on da streetz" imho. Unless, like you said, you are highly skilled, know how to grapple, and if you are comfortably dominating the fight and feel good opportunities for other kinds of kicks.

I agree with most of what you're saying about street fighting. In my opinion on the streets there are four basic kicks you should be using. They are front kick, roundhouse kick, back kick, and sidekick. All can be very powerful kicks, and will do the job if delivered right. And some very rare occasions. Depending on how stupid your opponent is that you're fighting. You may be able to pull off an occasional crescent kick, a 360 back kick, or an ax kick. But, if you're going against anyone that has any kind of fighting experience at all. You better be Bruce Lee fast to try those on the street. But to be honest. Most people on the streets that start a fight. Do not have any real skills fighting. Because anybody with any true skills. Is not only going to not start a fight. But they will try to walk away from it. Now, that being said. Keep your kicks low, waist and down on the streets. Your average Street thug, is not going to be looking out for kicks. Much less kicks coming to their legs. And most of them will come at you swinging wildly, or trying to grab you to tackle you. I know it's bad to say. But the thing is on the streets. You almost cannot have a conscience during a fight trying to save your life. Because any kind of conscience, is going to make you hold back and that could cost you dearly. Not knowing the person you're fighting. Or just how dangerous they are. Your best bet, is to end the fight quickly as you can. So go for the most vulnerable spot on their leg and that is the knee. You kick it from the side and the downward motion with a well-placed sidekick, or a nice well placed roundhouse kick. You could break it fairly easy. A nice downward kick just above the knee from the front will definitely crush it. It all sounds pretty harsh I know. Which is why, if I can walk away and I have a way out I will take it. Sorry, I didn't mean to be so long-winded. But I just wanted to give you my take on kicks to use on the streets. Oh I do want to say, you do put on some really good videos by the way.

this is a great karate instructor/expert who speaks the truth instead of spreading fantasy. head or high body kicks look great in tournament, and if you fall, the referee protect you against the opponent jumping on you. in real fight. no such referee & rules. if your foot is grabbed, . even if your foot is not grabbed, but if you are destabilized during the stand on 1 foot, you will still be in trouble. don't let movies & tournaments misguide you in real fighting.

Great video, Sensei Seth. Completely agree about not throwing a roundhouse. If you do it’s gotta be full speed and power. One thing you didn’t mention that I think is really important is retracting your leg after the point of impact (with a roundhouse or front kick). That is the number one thing my Sensei used to fuss at me about: “don’t just let your leg drop or leave it hanging out there. Land the kick, then retract your leg and use your hips to drive your leg down into your next attack”. Landing the kick is half the move.

I’m short, and I trained Wing Chun for many years as a teenager and in my 20’s (20 years ago now), but I still feel confident to use a little leg kick or a push kick to stop someone advancing on me. I would never kick above the waste (don’t think I ever have), but a little push kick to the inside knee on someone advancing will usually slow down their advance and put them off balance, that’s usually enough to defuse the situation or give you the upper hand. Most people’s arms are as long as my legs, so I’ve always based my training on using my feet first.

I have serious hip flexibility issues, so the only way I'm using kicks in a street fight is below the waist. That being said, having recently started BJJ training, I feel much more confident that I can use my size and weight to my advantage if it ever came to ground situation so I might be a little more adventurous with kicks if I felt I had a size advantage. When I was younger and much more flexible, I was taught that I could attempt a head-kick in tournament sparring for bonus points, but to never try it in a real fight for the reasons you point out in your video.. "Save the flashy stuff for the movies," I was told. "If you absolutely must kick someone in the head, kick him in the knees or groin first to bring his head down... then kick it."

I used to train at a school, in Tampa FL, that was pretty reality based. They had a saying, "The only time you kick a man in the head is when he is laying on the ground". Not saying we never had fun, when we sparred (goof off with some high kicks), but it was pretty much just an accepted rule - In an actual fight you never kick any higher than your opponents waist. With that said, I heard some logic I really liked - training to kick high can be important because you might not be on level ground. They could be on a car hood or half way up the stairs. Now, you have to kick "head high" just to hit a knee. Food for thought.

This is for reference only. As a wing chun guy, I was recommended to kick only when I already have contact with my arm. And I am also recommended to throw kicks that would balance out the force of my arm in contact. So it depends on whether your opponent's arm is inside or outside. It makes kicks quite rare. Even then the kicks are low and to the knee. It's mainly to gain control.

One of the most important things I've learned from a street fight is situational awareness and a proper mind set. Letting something go or being humorous about a very tense situation can seriously make an aggressor think twice about his decision. I've talked my way out of a lot of trouble, i'm not even a good socializer I hate socializing but when it comes to a tense situation i'm your negotiator lol. Oh, and I was also told a long time ago to NEVER do something you haven't trained into your body 10,000 times. If you try out a new flashy move you only did 200 times you're getting your ass flattened.

I think another big point here is understanding what your kicking techniques are for. Generally speaking if I am kicking you I am using it to control the range. The teep is one of my go to techniques to keep someone from walking me down (it's fast and can work as a push or a stinging bodyshot). Kicks in general come from a further range. You can keep someone on the outside using wisely chosen kicks that allow you to stay at a safe distance and even run if the situation calls for it. If however you're getting blitzed and you try dropping a kick in, you're going to get hurt. Distance Management is the #1 skill you need for actual self defense.
If you are going to throw damaging kicks to the body or leg make sure to set up your angles and use your hands to pull up the opponents guard as well as block view of your footwork. Easily my best combo is a 1-2 with a shifting step out to the right. You can drop another cross to come back to orthodox (the angle on this is golden) or throw that left leg body kick right into the liver (seriously in sparring hit that cross a few times and your opponent will start circling into your switch kick, -Do not throw this kick with Power in general sparring or you are a dick-). It's debilitating, it's fast, it's powerful, and the angle keeps your head off the centerline as well as protects you from a blitz since your opponent needs to reset their body to face you first (important note this set up is orthodox vs orthodox, do not try on a southpaw with the same set up because you are circling into the power).

  • @greecostyler

the problem is many think they create a kick like in the mma or k1 fights and immediately create a ko.
on the street you need kicks that are feasible even when cold, that need little balance and are powerful.
stop kick, front kick, low kick or stomp kick, push kick or if you are good a spinnin kick to the liver or spleen.

The problem is in a street fight the person won’t start swinging or initiate a fight until they are very close in and will do it suddenly. It’s nothing like sport fighting or martial arts.
The first sudden strike in your face stuns you no matter how used to it you are. Especially if you have a large, Caucasian nose like me where it breaking or getting hit blinds me for a second.
People will often start grappling with you as well.

I used two different kicks preemptively in multiple assailant self defense when I was young. Once I found myself surrounded by a half dozen guys and back kicked the one I “felt “ moving behind me and used him to push off to run over the guy in front of me and jump off the porch to run away. Second time I threw my keys at the guy in front of me and side kicked his buddy off a boardwalk. Keys guy tried to half assed shoot at my legs and I was able to stuff him, hurt him and get my keys back and get away. So, kicks can work preemptively if you can reduce telegraphing through practice and using hands to cover the movement. Be safe
