    ►How To Land More Punches in a Fight: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyo_j...
    The secret to effective striking in the martial arts and self-defense is timing. Not just timing your attacker's moves, but timing your OWN moves.
    Here's a simple drill to increase awareness of how your feet and hands work together.
    There are three basic timings to throwing a punch: foot first, hand first, and foot and hand together. To increase your options as a martial artist, you should practice all three. So...
    STEP 1: Get a bag or something you can hit.
    STEP 2: Add a stomp to your step.
    Now you can hear exactly: 1) when your fist makes impact, and 2) when your foot lands.
    Practice your punch with all three timings, manipulating your hand and foot to land exactly when you want them to. Then try this with all of your hand strikes.
    If you're a traditional martial artist, you can practice your kata or forms the same way. Pick a technique... pick a timing... then drill it. Try one timing then the others.
    When you feel comfortable practicing individual movements, try a round of shadowboxing with each timing. Same idea with a kata. Pick a kata and practice the whole sequence foot first, then hand first, then foot and hand together.
    The goal is to be able to throw techniques using any timing you want. Practicing this drill will help offer you more options and better control in a self-defense situation.

    Wow... this info is absolute gold! It's been almost a year since you posted it, and only 9.1k views? Damn shame.
    Then again, most people are into hip and stylish moves that make them look cool, as opposed to actually skilled, so I really shouldn't be surprised. Ah well... humans.

    Excellent video! But what are the pros/cons and applications for each of the three timings?

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Charles! It's not really about pros and cons, it's about using the right tool at the right time. If you can plant your foot first, you'll probably have more power. If you send your hand out first, you'll probably be faster. So, it's all about figuring out what you need to do to be effective at any given moment. And I think you should be able to do it all so you have choices!

    • @AndoMierzwa

      MilkANDMagic i enjoy practicing wing chun and i love the histX behind it. The blocking and redirecting is cool. Its what i like to do for fun. I use to think that it was built to be some indestructible system for safety but as time passed I started to understand that it might not play out the way i imagine it. But! Learning and practicing may prove to be beneficial when the goal is to aim at building muscle memory and bone conditioning. Good exercise for mind and body.

    Reminds me of falling out of sync. Given I have not trained in over a decade, I suspect I have fallen far out of sync. Movements are off by a few milliseconds, which is frustrating. Interestingly, I've found I adapt to an opponent after a single match, acclimated to them to the point that I instinctively block them without much thought the next day. The acclimation lasts for about a week unless it is reinforced.
    In fencing, it is hand first, then foot or, at least hand+foot simultaneously. Their is an internal sense that leading with the foot grants more power, along with pulling the hand back to wind up. Interestingly, I had the strongest punch in my TKD school by going hand first and driving it with my legs with no wind-up, but I was punching to impale.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hand first... definitely worth playing with. Bruce Lee thought so, too!

    • @Bansheexero
      @Bansheexero 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndoMierzwa in most cases, it is to establish and maintain a position of "right of way" which determines if both parties get hit, who gets the point. Of course, epee does not have right of way, but still follows this.
      Also, unless you have done so already, I think a vid on kicking with the front foot vs the back foot would be beneficial. Also, some minor alteration in kicks as well. Roundhouses tend to strike inward, but you can alter it to kick outward as well (doesn't quite have the same torque, but is good for set ups).
      Also, I only ever used it outside of class, since it would probably be deemed illegal in sparring, but foot blocking is another fun thing to explore (simplest demonstration is to kick the shin as the person lifts their leg to kick, cutting it off before the kick itself. When I was younger, I could block punches this way (and with shoes on, if you are fast and precise, you can catch a knife in the sole of your foot as well, though I feel there are safer ways to deal with situation such as deescalation.

    • @AndoMierzwa
