  • There are many variations of a "fighting stance"... but this one is the worst! Here's my breakdown of the "Triple F Stance". :)

    SUMMARY:
    Martial artists may not agree on what makes up the best fighting stance, but I'll bet we can all agree on the worst!
    In this video, I talk about the worst self-defense position that anyone can find themselves falling into... whether they want to or not! Here's the main idea...
    You’ve heard of fight, flight, or freeze. Well, the worst self-defense position combines all three. Let's say you're suddenly under attack...
    Your head leans backward, taking flight... your hands punch forward, ready to fight... and your mind freezes, unable to commit to either plan. I call this the "Triple-F Stance". First, because your body reacts with fight, flight, and freeze all at the same time. Second, because if you fall into the Triple-F Stance, you are Triple F’d!
    The Triple-F Stance will get you killed if the bad guy is committed to coming after you. That’s why the most important habit in fighting is maintaining a strong, balanced fighting stance no matter what happens. If this sounds familiar, it's okay. Anyone can fall into a Triple-F Stance. Anyone can be exhausted, caught off-guard, overwhelmed by multiple attackers, or get injured and start panicking.
    Falling into a Triple-F Stance is not the mistake... the mistake is staying in a Triple-F Stance! Being frozen between fight and flight will get you killed. To survive, you must break the indecision and commit to a plan of action as quickly as possible.
    So, if you feel yourself being pulled in opposite directions, snap out of it and fix your stance! Don’t even think about fighting back until you’ve recovered a strong position. Here's a drill to help you recover...
    ROUND #1: Get a partner. Let him pad up so he can grab, punch, and kick at you. Don’t hit back. Just focus on holding your stance.
    ROUND #2: Turn up the speed and power. Then add another attacker or two. But don't hit back yet! You will have a hard enough time just staying on your feet.
    ROUND #3: You can hit back now! Follow-up with your own punches and kicks or just run to a corner of the room you designate as a "safe zone".
    This simple drill is a great way to get your self-defense priorities straight. The biggest mistake would thinking you don't need to do it! So, do it! :)

      I wanted to say this is good advice, but I remembered something I just told my kids. Fights always have a Round 2. It could be a call to the principal's, or ten of your enemy's cousins who want to bust your ass, or even the police knocking on the door.
      Now I'm kinda torn. It's no good to leave a threat unhandled, but Round 2 is such a bitch.
      Would really appreciate any thoughts.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I talk about Round 2 a little in this video.
      th-cam.com/video/oYLF0dGajMM/w-d-xo.html Obviously, you can't predict
      the future. You can only deal with what's in front of you. And if
      there's a threat to your safety in front of you, and I can't avoid
      fighting, then I'd rather fight back than take a beating. Round 2 could
      also be me in physical therapy for years or in a coffin! Either way,
      telling your kids that fights carry consequences is good advice!

Last time i got in a fight, the guy hit me pretty hard in the head and threw me off on a side but i was smiling, he opened his eyes like i just turned into a zombie lol. I've always been a chicken when it comes to entering a fight but always a bull for getting out of one... I'll take it all and give it all on each and every single fight.

    Great video and great advice, Sensei Mierzwa! I often see experienced martial artists resort to these three stances after taking a decent hit. I think your advice about steering your attention back to your training (and the fight) is spot on! Too often people downplay the mental conditioning in favor of the physical training.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are so right about those fight stance mistakes as I'd seen so many people do just that & be slaughtered. I myself fight in tight in & around up & down not galloping in & out & all around w/one leg following the other. I build my basics into habits that once I master the basics the basics is everything & everything is the basics. What you do in training is what you will do fighting & is why it is so crucial to master the basics & not develop the mistakes. Most fighters want to show boat & show off & rush it all where haste makes it time & energy wasted. It's not about the muscle hustle so much more it's about the muscle memory & leverage. The power & speed will come all it's own & therefore is no need to burn oneself out training. The need is to just go moderately & patiently slow into conforming the right habits & you will have it. You know it & I know it but others just don't seem to get it. I am Sting em dead Dave Overbey alias Crazy Davy best known as Punchy Puncherallo & you can TH-cam me Dave Overbey I am not David Overby as is there is another M.M.A fighter by that name. I'm 64 going on 34 where he is 34 & going on 64 L.O.L I'll be the bald or shaved head one. I really like your teachings as I have learned a few tricks of the trade from it. Thanks & Thumbs up to you.

    I love how you say “your gonna die”. You keep it real and have good advice. Good on ya. So here is a question. How does one counter the bear stance aside from throwing straights. This stance is tormenting for me to spar against, and is wonderful to use against sparring opponents. Any tips?

    • @stevenwynn646
      @stevenwynn646 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The zoning is rather obnoxious to deal with. And going in just seems to get me elbowed or kneed.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice to meet you, Steven! What exactly does your bear stance look like? I'm trying to visualize your challenge. :)

    • @stevenwynn646
      @stevenwynn646 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ando Mierzwa. Nice to meet you as well. I’m not sure how to send a picture, but it does not have a leading foot like a wrestlers stance. The feet are parallel with each other and knees bent and legs spread a medium distance or into a sumo spread if going against a wrestling stance. Your lumbar is either in a neutral position or with your weight slightly forward. Your arm and hands are approximately 150 degrees Bent above and in front of your face to serve as a guard and jab. I’d say your elbows are forward, on level with the users chin, and slightly in front of the knees. I’m just not really sure what to do about this, and would like to know if there is a counter to such a strategy. My best bet I came up with is to match it, but I feel like there is something I am missing. Other strategies I personally attempted resulted in me taking knees and elbows that would devastate me if it was not sparring. It puts me in a limbo between wanting to fight passive and go in. So I guess the main question is what would you do about this?
      I can send a picture of this too. There is a good one I found on google images that looks like it, but I do not know how to do this. If it makes it easier

    Everything you said was practical and basic which is what I believe most in when training. If you try to perfect the simple but effective moves and strategies then you will be able to do it under stress. Even if you take a punch your training is more likely to kick in and take over. All that being said one thing in this video stood out most to me. That must be the most neatly pressed gi I have ever seen. Not a wrinkle in it anywhere. You should give your dry cleaners free lessons for such good work.

    I always tend to go into the 3rd side stance. I found it useful to cross block like Joe Frazier and plow into them looking for body shots. Not too flashy; but very effective.

    Make contact first. If someone moves towards you, move towards them. Don't give them time and space to build momentum. That's how you get dominated. The fingers move first with the body coming in behind. If a stranger attacks out of the blue, be willing to rip off the soft bits and get bloody.

    Ossu! Thanks for the tip about the drill - I'll put that into my notebook :-) I've been drilling myself in getting off the center line and in footwork 'cause I have several bad habits to break and would like to build much better habits. It's one thing to know I have to do this, it's another to have the muscle memory to do it, and that takes repetition :-)

    Advice for aggressive fighters throwing wild punches/haymakers? I honestly haven't been in a lot of fights and I also notice when confronted with the possibility of a fight I get butterflies in my stomach and start shaking? Anything to help calm me? I want to learn Jui Jitsu but just don't have the money at the moment. I just want to learn how to defend myself properly because I'm a small guy and often get teased by the bigger guys. Only advantage I have is my speed, but I have been practicing on my own some beginner boxing from shane on fight tips.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Shane has lots of great tips, so you're off to a good start. The key is to just keep doing SOMETHING. Pick a few moves that you think are the most important, and just start drilling them. There is lots of time for you to add on as you go. As far as staying calm, finding a friend to throw punches at you is a great way to start training. Familiarity breeds comfort. Keep punching!

      If it's legal in your state, always carry a small unit of pepper spray w/in quick reach. I would never use it except as an absolute last resort, but if it looks like it's heading that way & someone is setting you up for a sucker punch or pushes you first, and you can't escape, then you're justified. BTW, always take their Drivers License (but don't steal their $!). That way, you'll know who they are & where they live & what they look like & Google more info on them if you like. You can copy that info & then send their license back to them in the mail. I think it's fair to say that someone would be less willing to start a fight with you again once you have all their B.G. info!

      Meditation helped me out alot. Especially meditation while training. Try to just breathe and let the movements come natural to you. To the point where you can feel or sense nothing else but your own energy. Thinking too much about thinking is what will get you in trouble in fights. Also keep in mind that as a smaller guy you have the advantage in cardio. Big muscles require alot of oxygen. You can be tiny and tough as nails. Good luck out there.

      I feel you, I have the same story but slightly different, I'm either scared(of what I and the opponent can do), too angry which makes me forget my legs, my jabs, then I throw dem big angry ugly haymakers, they are accurate but slow, and telegraphed...then there's my inner fighting nerd who likes being hit and only fights at the level that I'm being fought (pretty much all reaction based), everything sifu ando said is gucci, but I'll add, sparring, move stealing, sticky hands sparring, women's self defense never works for women, but you know who it works for? Skinny guys like us 😈🤐, *practice your moves while sparring* are you naturally athletic? If so then just learn a lot of moves *while sparring* be unorthodox, I have a couple anime inspired setups that I can get away with because I'm really crafty, train elbows/knees/backfist and "fish hooking"/eye gouges...tough guys hate being out struck by a lil guy, so expect a lot of "hugs" or one hand holding you still so they can power punch you because they need a tripod to line up their shots...

    I love all of your great messages and tips, yet out of curiosity, I have a question. Although it is so very true that the best defensive movements are off the line or forward (should you choose to fight), what about stepping backwards in order to create some distance and widden your field of view and improve reaction times? The attacker is not always faster going forward and not always commited to pursue (provided you also got decent footwork going backwards and won't stumble).
    From my own personal experience outside of competition, in real life on the street running backwards while keeping the attacker/s well in sight saved me.
    Many years ago I was once surrounded and jumped on the street by 6 or 7 attackers, I've made my way out of the circle and then started walking backwards as they were walking towards me and as soon as one of the guys started running, they all did so I started running backwards, keeping them in sight and working on strategies on the go, trying to figure out which one I should take out first and how, which ones were wearing sports shoes and which ones not etc. By the time I was set to counter attack and was waiting for the gap between us to shorten in order to counter (set up a "wall" on the move), some of them gave up, tired of chassing me, some got nervous because they were unable to close in and catch me and gave up and the rest followed suit seeing that their buddies had given up (although I'm more inclined to believe that they just got tired).

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Chris! Hey, if moving backward saved your life, then I'm not going to tell you it was the wrong thing to do! The difference is you were doing it ON purpose and WITH purpose. My problem is with moving back as a blind reaction to an attack. Backing up without a plan usually just makes things worse. Thanks for the comment!
