  • In this video we diagnose, clean, and adjust the CD player's laser diode voltage supply. The customer sent this Bose AWRC1P Wave Radio CD Player in for repair because the CD player was not working. The radio worked fine. During the repairs, we demonstration the proper approach to setting the voltage supply and identify the circuit traces component and traces involved.

    Sir you are a absolute genius, my player was not working for over 2 years, cds dusted and put away, after taking it for repair today, the distributor wanted an arm and leg, i returned home with it and wished i could fix it somehow since i do basic repair, amongst others i came accross your video, although very long i kept watching after seeing the comments , unbelievably it started working magically after i turned the potentiator bit by bit, just like you said, this is a very happy day for me. God bless you.

    OK pulled it apart and fiddled with the adjustment (after finding a micro screwdriver) clock wise and it did nothing , I gave up on it then said what do I have to lose and went counter clockwise and tada it is healed. I regret that I doubted you. Many thanks for the time you took to post this video and you have saved a Bose from the trash pile. Thanks again. You be bad!

    It worked for me, and my CD player works again! Thanks so much!
    I should mention that the proper adjustment seems to be a matter of finding the right value through 360 degrees, like on a clock face, going back and forth and dialing it in to the point (or time) that works best. Voltage did not seem to increase for me by simply turning the adjuster farther in one direction.

    Thank you, works perfectly. If you plan your videos, this 25 minute could be about five minutes. Nonetheless, seriously appreciate your assistance. Also, I would have liked to see a couple of test points and know the actual voltage measurements rather than trial and error. It took me about six or seven tries, because I know with trim pots it can be a very sensitive adjustment. Each time I turned the pot barely more than a hair.
    Thanks again!

    This worked beautifully for my similar model. The slight increase with the potentiometer took 3 tries but with approx. 1/4 turn total in a clockwise direction did the trick. I can’t thank you enough!

      Sorry, I no longer work on these devices because they are now past their lifespan. You can try making small incremental changes from one extrema to the other. However it is most likely out of tolerance capacitors at this point in time.

    What a timely video. I salvaged a not-working wave radio like in this video from a garage and have got it working now. I turned the potentiometer approximately 1/4 turn and it now works. Thank you so much for sharing your work. I hope it's reasonably safe electronically to have adjusted the potentiometer like this?

    • @CharlieStyr
      @CharlieStyr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Paradise hi, no problem! Yes, I turned it a tiny bit twice and it didn’t go, the third increment got it going. I could get the player working if I manually spun the CD with my hand, quickly closed the lid and pressed play so I think it was “only just not working” as it were. Listened to a number of CDs now, makes a good kitchen CD player in my house! Best regards

    I have a model AWRC-1G that I need to try and fix the CD player that you show in your video. Problem is, I can't get the top off of it. I removed 2 screws in the back and 1 screw by the CD. It will not come off in the front. I do not see any other screws. Can you help, what am I doing wrong?

    • @predhuntr03
      @predhuntr03 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are two black plastic tabs on the bottom in the front that you need to pry the white cover over. A plastic pry tool will be the best way to do this without damaging anything. A screwdriver will also help but you risk damaging the plastic.
      Hope this helps. I just did this Today, but turning the screw CW and CCW didn’t fix mine.

    My Bose Wave has been radio only for years but thanks to you it’s now back in action on CDs. Quite nerve-wracking turning the potentiometer screw by stages to a total of a half turn. It started to start/stop at a quarter turn. Took it slow as you said. Thank you so much. Question -why would Bose build in a fix for a problem or did they hand adjust this in manufacture? Stay safe. Regards from Scotland.

    • @ElectroRestore
      @ElectroRestore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are correct in assuming they adjusted them by hand in the factory. The issue is not so much the potentiometer, but the fact that other components (such as capacitors) change values with age. This leads to varying voltages throughout the circuit. That is why a variable resistor was used instead of a fixed value.

    I have a similar unit. The CD player only reads a disc if I manually push the laser assembly a bit closer to the spindle. I hear a plastic click as I do that, but then it will play the disc properly. The time to read the disc's table of contents takes up to 30 seconds afterwards, but it then plays all tracks OK. It will NOT read CD-R discs, but this is older technology (c.2000) and I know some older units do not recognize CD-Rs. What could be making the laser assembly seem to not return fully to the innermost position ? A damaged set of cogs in the tracking assembly ? Not sure how that could happen ? Any ideas. You do not show if it is difficult to remove the casing as the video jumps over that part of the disassembly.
