Broken Pioneer CD Player, is it fixable? | Vintage Hifi Revival

  • Found this one on eBay, wasn't all that interested at first, but the seller offered me a good price a figured it'd be worth a shot to repair it. This is the first CD player I've attempted to fix, and I think it went quite well. Granted the largest problem I had to fix could have been caused by me, but hey that's just part of the fun hah.
I don't think I will be picking up any more CD players, unless there is something mechanically interesting with it, since they are fairly simple devices in terms of mechanics. (Incredibly cool electronically however) And CD's, or digital audio in general doesn't have much appeal to me either. It's kinda hollow, with no nuanced differences across devices, while a tape could sound somewhat different depending on the device used.

Folks please upvote everything on this channel and comments too. It's helps the algorithm for his channel. These types are videos are great. I'm a locksmith by trade for the last 30 years but also restore old electronics like tape recorders reel to reels etc. I'm no expert just a hobbyist and love videos EXACTLY like he does.
And no, I don't know him and not related 🤣
I just found his channel last week and fell in love with it.

Another problem some of these Pioneer CD players had was skipping caused by wobble of the disc motor shaft. The fix was a stabilization kit kit supplied by Pioneer. It consisted of a small neodymium magnet that was glued to the motor as close as possible to the spindle. This minimized the extent of the wobble. I never had a unit come back again for this problem once this fix was applied.

Those old pioneer CD players are known for the laser lens to fall out. Just never do what I did once was use super glue as it will damage the laser. Another common problem is the capacitors tend to go bad as on one I had it worked when first got it and the next day it wouldn't read a CD do to caps going bad.

As I remember of those players they had only 3 seconds of memory for skipping. This internal memory allows you to not hear the skipping.
Then later it increases to 10 to 15 seconds for the portable models first then the stand alone players.
Skipping was a serious problem at that time. Then sound quality with increases oversampling to increase the quality. Because of the sharp sound Good Video 😎 one thing I just remembered was the high end cd players the disk moved over the laser for better stability. To lower the cost most players were designed for the laser to move.

Something to watch out for in laser based players: the lasers are super sensitive to static shock. The two solder pads on the laser ribbon are for bridging to short the laser out so it can't be damaged by technitans fingers

Instead I now repair and refurbish amplifiers... (but for amps, the main issue are the pots, especially when they have loudness....) Still enjoy the challenge though.

If you ever get a slightly later Pioneer CD player that either struggles to spin, try putting a very tiny amount of a very light oil down the motor shaft. It will only temporarily fix it, but prove it’s the motor. The motors came without the turntable and you had to very carefully prise the old one off. But in the black plastic cd mechanism was a modded U snapped piece of plastic, you cut that out and put it on the new motor, before pushing the turntable back on, it then acts as a height setting jig for the turntable.

After re-gluing the laser, you need to adjust the focus and power of the laser as the lense is a minute bit off where it was at the factory. You'll need a scope ... or trial and error. The lasers on these old things don't last forever. Sometimes these old players won't play newer pressed CDs or CD-Rs ... randomly. YMMV.

You missed the solder blob on the ribbon cable you should bridge this when removing the laser to prevent static damage. Sometimes you can adjust the laser (the pot on the ribbon cable) this changes the power to the laser however this is only a temporary fix usually the laser is about to die.

The motor was never broken, that was just a theory I had going into it, I'm guessing it wasn't spinning the disk much when I first tried it because there was no signal from the disc being generated with the lens loose in its housing. So, it was just erroring out and stopping the disc from coming up to full speed.

The loose object was the Laser Objective Lens, used to focus the Laser on the surface of the disc.
I have an early Philips CD Player from 1984 (38 years old) and it has ribbon cables.
A CD Player is no less repairable than other Hi-Fi equipment, but it's all a question of SPARE PART AVAILABILITY.
The SPOILER told the viewer that the player WORKS, before the repair was completed! ... As Homer would say, "Doh!" 👎😂
Pioneer's quality "going down" by 1987? ... That's ONLY 5 years after the CD format launched! ... It's just "bad design" and "cheaping out," as I've never experienced that issue!
EDIT: My Philips player uses a "swing arm" laser mech, as opposed to the linear tracking Sony mech. Swing arm is FAR SUPERIOR in performance to any linear mech I've used! Philips discontinued it, due to the requirements of Computer Optical Drives, which were not suited to Swing Arm audio mechs.

@@HifiJelly Just a word of caution and so you know for the future endeavors with CD players the ribbon cable that had the two solder spots is to be bridged BEFORE you remove the ribbon cable, once you remove the connectors from the laser assembly it is vulnerable static damage you are very lucky it didn't get zapped thus killing the laser itself. EVERY laser pickup has a spot to protect the laser from static damage. Just don't forget to clear it once once the connection(s) are restored to the laser pickup. The sled and spindle motors aren't static sensitive so no need to short those. Bridging the laser protection is only necessary if you disconnect the laser connector from the pick up. Great job make sure everything moves freely sled motor and spindle motor and that unit should last a VERY LONG time.
Another poster wrote about the type of glue to use, DO NOT use super glue use wood glue it doesn't put off any gases harmful to the internal optics. Let the wood glue throughly dry and you should be all set for a great many ah hours of CD listening enjoyment. They certainly don't make CD players like that anymore. Now a days pretty much the only metal is the motors MAYBE the frame that holds the motors, other wise its practically ALL plastic inside modern made CD players. Unless you pay 1000s for an audiophile type transport (external DAC) usually required for those too.

I have a Pioneer PD - 7050 in my collection, the laser mechanism is the same. Thank God, my disk stabilizer was just not in place. The most unpleasant thing is when it does not read disks and nothing dangles inside. You open it - there are no lenses either in the laser or inside the case - that's the problem. And so if you received a package with a disc player and something rattles inside, then 99% is a lens - just glued and repair work 30 minutes. Lenses on multi-disk pioneers especially like to fly out - there the lens is directed down.

@@simon_1987 I don't need to find a working one, I service them and bring them back to life, I've never seen a CD player than couldn't play an 80 minute CD, older CD players can sometimes have difficulty playing burnt CDs, that's because a burnt CD has a lower waveform output than a commercially pressed CD, I actually seek out CD players that don't work for cheap, so I can repair them, I make good money selling them after repairing them.
