    What i absolutely love about this channel is that you get to see the whole diagnosis, even when it gets a bit puzzling, not shutting the video down and hunting for it off camera. We see all the good bits but also see the puzzling bits, we are learning together and thats what makes this one of the best electronic repair channels. Thankyou!

    So a single capacitor pulling the voltage down, but the skill is finding it, cheers

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks Andy!
      Yeah, it kind of threw me for a bit, as the input to the voltage regulator should have been above 12v, and it measured around 14v with it removed, so I thought the input supply was OK. Hence my thinking it was something after that pulling it down. That's why I removed the inductor to isolate anything on the output part of the circuit.
      After that it still wasn't right, so I looked at the input side of the voltage regulator and found the problem!

      @@TheInfoworks Hi Andy,
      I've just had a look. I've not had much experience with kilns :) With the contactor being 4 pole, and you converting it to single phase, I'd use two of the poles for the live, and two for the neutral to spread the load across it, but you probably already know that, just you didn't mention it on the video. I bet it will be bloody expensive to run on electric as you said, but I think the price of gas is also going to be expensive too!

      @@BuyitFixit Mick, the 12 KW was I'm sure was installed to get a quick firing. I'm just wondering if a detuned 3 KW will get to a temperature of 1040 C, or would the losses be so bad that any temperature rise will be negated. If so where would it stall, the experiment would probably consume 30 KW Hrs. Hmm, is it worth it? Cheers

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose it depends on how well insulated it is compared to the thermal loss over time? I think you would just have to try it and see?

    That device is over 10 years old, and based on some reading I did many years ago, Electrolytic Capacitors have a performance life span of 10 years. Troubleshooting these cap's in circuit doesn't always revel good readings, so removing them for testing is best practice. Excellent works sir.

    Great video, Very interesting.
    I have the same radio in my bedroom and it died a couple of years ago. Completely dead. No display and no audio.
    After fighting to get it apart, like you, I found the fault was a surface mount transistor that was wired with a zener to be a 5 volt regulator.
    With no 5 volts to the logic circuitry, it was no go. A new transistor and it has been going strong for the last 2 years. I do love BOSE!!
    The only other problem was that the wires to the speakers were covered with stick-on foam. To stop them potentially rattling, I guess?
    The foam had completely disintegrated and was a right pain to remove.

    You will probably find more capacitors on their way out in the future.
    I bought one of these about a decade ago from a man who worked for Bose factory service repairing these. He had gone through and replaced all the bad capacitors, marginal components and made some engineering changes. Even so, a curious defect remained. When first plugged in, the radio would produce full volume static for about a minute and then it'd power on like nothing happened. The seller was completely honest about the issue, so I knew of it going in.
    Curiously, if one installed the backup batteries, that power on problem stopped happening.
    One day it stopped powering up at all, so I started going through it. You'll find another linear voltage regulator (a 7805) in there. If memory serves, it's on the display board. Even with the benefit of the factory service literature, I never found the problem. All the voltages were correct at the places where they were supposed to be. Eventually, I parted the thing out to save others. I could only guess that maybe the microcontroller conked out, perhaps due to the undiscovered fault that caused trouble at power on?
    Now, years later, I've got another one that, like the one you repaired, doesn't power up properly, or powers up erratically. Maybe I'll have better luck with it.
    I have to be honest -- although the Wave is a nice sounding radio, I find the build quality and some parts of the design a bit questionable (such as the very high input voltage to the 12 volt regulator).

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that, yes someone else mentioned about replacing the other capacitors. The radio you mentioned does sound a weird fault. I wonder if there was some kind of mute circuit that wasn't being reset properly? Hopefully you'll have better luck with this other radio.

    Well resurrected. Yes, when the regulator was out the 13.5V at the input was a clue (the 7812 will dropout at anything less than 14V). 23V input is pushing it, depending on what current is being drawn. As well as the Quicktest you may want to build yourself a dim bulb tester (just in case) if you don't already have one.

      That is quite the voltage drop across that regulator, I bet it generates a lot of heat - possibly explains the failure of the capacitor which looks to be quite close to the heatsink, maybe it has gradually dried out over time. Failure by design do you think?

    Nice one! So they are using half wave rectification for the controls pwr supply? That always seems to torture the capacitor to death no matter the quality. Probably wants a 50V or higher rating cap for longer life.
    Was the failed cap a quality brand ? I've noticed the quality brands tend to often fail less visually detectably (no doming). I think the rubber bung design on good caps allows controlled venting out the bottom..

      Thanks Gann. I can't remember but it would have probably been a branded cap, and yes just half wave via one diode it seems! I didn't trace the circuit far enough, but I guess the microcontroller supply is derived from the 12v line somewhere along the line...

    Did the FM section of the radio work? In my experience, when the radio scans all of the FM channels, something is wrong with the FM reception. I like the easy fixes when replacing a capacitor solves the non-working problem.

      We get very little reception around here, as we are quite remote and in a valley with mountains all around. I only get a good signal if I walk up the drive to the top of the hill. The walls in the house are stone and 2ft thick so reception in the house even on a mobile phone is a challenge!

    Lucky you with having the inductor out when powering it with the cable in reverse. If power had been there, some other components would have seen +12V and could have been damaged. But you must have luck from time to time.

    Get a ESR meter! It measures the series impedance inside the capacitor! Even if the capacitance is correct the esr can be high! It generates a signal about 100Khz and calculates the impedance! Only costs about £50! Fraser.

      I was. I was also shouting at the screen when you were wasting time messing about with the screen. "Thou shall check voltages!" ALWAYS check the voltages at the output from the power supply before you go any where else. They wouldn't use a 35V cap unless the voltage was near or above 25V. When you measured 13.5V at the input to the regulator i knew straight away that the problem was a bad capacitor. If you had connected a scope, you would've seen the ripple. The others near the regulator are probably lower capacitance than they should be as well.

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes in series. The output of the regulator goes through the inductor (probably for noise suppression or filtering) then to the rest of the circuit.
