I would like to thank both the program writer and your explanation. I installed it on my own laptop and there is no lag so far. So much so that the delay now appears as zero milliseconds.
multi-threading support already came to MSFS, long time ago, when it launched on Xbox. prior to that it was running on single core and was barely playable even on a top tier PC.
@@jimmy8x541yes, but realistically it has only added basic multithreading capabilities. The main culprit is still a single main thread, which is still limiting even on 14th gen Intel or X3D Ryzens. True Multithreading support means to step away from one main thread to multiple 'main' threads within the architecture of MSFS for different aspects of simulation.
I was skeptical.... but downloaded it and tried it... not really knowing what I was doing..... all I can say is WOW!!!!!! Now for a really busy airport to try it on....
How can I say this? I love it! Having a mid grade pc i7-11700k and rtx 3060 ti I was getting tired of having my frame rate dropping to low 20's when approaching big airports. This has cured all problems and improved my simming experience greatly. Thanks to the creator, you did good!!!
This seems to have made a significant difference to my "experience" on MSFS with my system (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz 4.00 GHz NVidia RTX3060). Thank you Mark and @ResetXPDR.
I'm going to give this a try! lol, I also have a i7-6700k at 4.00Ghz, however I picked up a 4070 Ti Super. I would think I'd see an improvement as well.

Thank you so much Mark for this add-on for MSF2020. It has solved my stuttering when I’m in short final approach, which makes me go mad, when I was trying to land. I was playing around with TLOD since I just got the 5800x3d, I am happy to finally be able to have traffic when I fly airliners now. I set TLOD to 700-800 and I was still getting at least 50 fps and the cpu was only in the yellow. My 3700x only allowed me to go to 100. I had to use 50-75 the whole time. Now I can go as far as I want
YEP!! done figured it out. NOT because of knowledge, but because of pure luck. Pushed on and opened EVERYTHING and READ, until I did something correct. I know somebody would have helped
I lock my sim at 30fps using the in sim vsync and 1/2 refresh rate setting. My 2080ti 3950x triple screen system gives me rock solid silky smooth judder and jitter free results in most locations. However this tool is excellent to help me maintain the framerate at places like JFK and New York city. Combine this tool and FSR frame interpolation and the need to upgrade my hardware is pushed back for a least a couple of years.
As an almost exclusively Xbox player, your description of "adding xbox magic" to the graphics optimisation settings for PC players, this made me chuckle. Does it also give PC players the opportunity to experience the Lag, time dilation, ABO's and CTD's which are all too common an occurrence for Xbox players flying complex aircraft in a complex environment? 😂 Unfortunately xbox's auto optimisation is somewhat lacklustre in memory pressure situations - the ability to manually drop the TLOD and probably even more so the OLOD to prioritise avionics over the shoelaces on the shoe inside the ferrari parked outside the house 2NM away at a handcrafted airport, would be much appreciated on console - but sadly that level of control is not offered, to the detiment of performance, functionality and stability in this scenario. At least this plugin does allow control over the parameters, and I've heard lots of good things about it... but yeah, hopefully PC simmers will never have to experience the "Xbox Magic" in its full glory!

Great video Mark, I'm against these tools as for me they can compromise the experience in the sim and this can get worst as you become more disconnected with your PC specifications and the settings in the sim. Happy this is providing benefit to others though and I guess some folks will enable this and not notice any difference (to visual quality) which is fine I guess as performance is probably king in a flight simulator. 👍
As mentioned in the video, due to my system I will not use this all the time, I don’t need to, but for those that don’t want to ‘’tweak’’ the settings and on medium to low end system, this will provide a new lease of life for their hardware.
for those that get "read only" mode / version incompatibility error like me on beta: This utility directly accesses active MSFS memory locations while MSFS is running to read and set TLOD and cloud quality settings on the fly at a maximum rate of one read and, if required, change per setting per second. The utility will first verify that the MSFS memory locations being used are still valid and if not, likely because of an MSFS version change, will attempt to find where they have been relocated. If it does find the new memory locations and they pass validation tests, the utility will update itself automatically and will function as normal. If it can't find or validate MSFS memory locations at any time when starting up, the utility will self-restrict to read only mode to prevent the utility making changes to unknown MSFS memory locations. As such, I believe the app to be robust in its interaction with validated MSFS memory locations and to be responsible in disabling itself if it can't guarantee that. Nonetheless, this utility is offered as is and no responsibility will be taken for unintended negative side effects. Use at your own risk!
The app works with the latest SU15 beta. The usual reason users are seeing this message is because of a permissions issue and running the app as administrator has solved it in all cases so far.

Your right.. Microsoft need to address the stutters and fps drops..into the next game ,even this game..as even the big gun GPU can be tanked with running MSFS
To be honest, folks are just lazy. There's a lot on the user side to affect stutters as well and apart from exceptional circumstances especially using third party content, the sim fundamentally doesn't have stutters. I fly in my Quest 3 admittedly with a powerful rig but also with lesser machines also and stutters are minimal. Using this tool will be at the cost of graphical fidelity which I can't do, and why should I when it performs beautifully anyway?
Interesting tool, although my hardware is good enough to not need it, I can see where some people who have systems that struggle would find this very useful. I still find it interesting that cloud quality is still mentioned though because I've done extensive tests on my system, and there's literally zero fps difference between low detail and ultra detail clouds, and I'm not even running the best hardware. (i7-13700K, RTX 3080)
Just worth noting that mods/hacks like this can effect msfs memory allocation, and could cause some instability. Also, because these can end up in your Community folder they may effect future msfs updates. Maybe this one reason posting mods like this and Smooth Flight are banned on the msfs user forum. Just saying that you need to take many so-called Game Changer TH-cam advice with a pinch of salt imho. Fortunately, with my fairly high end i913900k/rtx4090 PC I don't find these, and even OpenXR Toolkit necessary (99% PCVR btw). If the msfs developer deems dynamic tolod/olod (and maybe other settings) to be useful I think that they will eventually be properly incorporated.
I am looking at other MSFS settings that could be reduced to boost performance when all other options have been exhausted, and this is one of them, but I need a few stars to align before this would come even close to reality, so no promises but there is hope.
although players that have RTX 4090, 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD, MSFS 2020 runs still stuttering because of loading every details from the simulator... and also depends if you fly in real weather conditions...
What use is it to reduce terrain detail on the ground where you need it and increase it at altitude where you won't notice? How does this interact with VR?
I dont really understand why the TLOD decreasing is preferred versus clouds decreasing while going under 1000ft to land ? 🤔 it looks to me as the details of terrain are more important in this phase than clouds isn’t ?
I use AutoFPS to fly. When I return to the world map after 1LEG, the AutoFPS add-on will call the Simconnect and Session are displayed in red text. I don't know why Simconnect is disconnected. Maybe you have a solution?
Make sure you don't have a conflicting version of Mobiflight installed. If all else fails, you can always exit the app and restart it while still in MSFS and you should be good to go for your next flight.
I recommend when trying to establish best settings dial in TLOD or OLOD first then experiment with the other. Both have quite an impact and it is easy to lose your way. Once dialled in - use both if you need it.
Hello Mark, one question I installed auto fps, Mark how do I know if the auto fps is working, when I look on the desktop the top it says msfs 20/20 simConnect and session in red, if I'm playing msfs will it change to green, regards
This may be a rather naive question but how do I enable the AutoFPS screen to view in VR? I know its working because the visuals look so smooth. It's fantastic! I would just like to monitor what's happening.
5950x 6900xt but truth be told even that rig struggles to handle 5120x1440 resolution unless I turn a lot of stuff way down. As you said the world thread is singular, and that is common in pretty much all games because there are no tasks that can be threaded off that are totally independent of the world thread (called mainthread in msfs). Even the most thread spreading optimized games still eventually need to feed the material all those threads process into a world thread that combines it all into something for the GPU to process and that my friends is always where the bottleneck is on the CPU end of the system. That is why most games work better on systems with stupendous single core performance and fewer cores over systems with more cores that are not as fast.
@@caribbaviator7058 actually my GPU keeps up just fine - mainthread is always my bottleneck. I can see it when I enable the on screen statistics (FPS, frame time, etc.) with the performance limiter always indicating mainthread.
Kudos to the dev but why would you want the same LOD/altitude settings for a low level flight in an ultralight versus a high level flight in your PMDG 737? The original Dynamic LOD program lets you fine tune user created profiles based on your own system and to me that seems the ideal solution. I tried this version in VR and it simply locked my LOD at 50 no matter what framerate I was getting.
If you check Use Expert Settings, you can change that TLOD min to something different in about as long as it takes to pick another profile in the other app. In future, I may automate this version further by being able to have a profile per aircraft type, which would be even less effort.
Works great except I have 1 problem, about 4 of my landings since I have used this, have the runway lights way above the field. I found a post about LOD settings can affect this. Anyone else?
I have heard this a few times but it is very rare. You can try setting the Alt TLOD base much higher than default 1000 ft so that TLOD settles well before MSFS has to draw runway lights, with the obvious side effect that TLOD will be at minimum much earlier in the final descent phase.
I tried to download this application and a window popped up. It shows Create Link on desktop is checked. I tried to click on auto-start with MSFS and below that is 4 lines of information: Checking NET 7 desktop runtime. Runtime not installed or outdated! Downloading NET Desktop Runtime. Installing NET desktop Runtime. When I click install nothing happens. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Why I still have low FPS , after using this app? I got 11 , for goodness sake....and I got an RTX 3060 grapfic card. I am surely clumsy in setting things up, but I feel sooo frustrated.
Can someone please tell me how to download this installer on my windows 11, I added the file name in the exclusion section in Windows defender, but it's always blocked no matter what I try. Any ideas please?
I heard good things about this, It's free to try out and play around with it. I run things on high on my system and I get like 20 FPS and max if lucky enough is 30FPS even on my RTX 3090 - I do not know how people can get stable 60FPS, even those that are on 3080 can get more FPS then me - SHAME
Absolutely. I've been critical of this tool for desktop use. If you don't understand why you are getting stutters then that should be resolved first, but for VR it's probably an even better use case. 👌
@@dtrjones ...because many of the folk who have joined the ranks of flightsimmers since the release of MSFS2020 need help in chasing down / resolving stutters, which can be very tricky. This tool makes easy work of adjusting LOD's on the fly for a smoother experience.
Have never seen the point of this and its predecessors. At altitude hard to see much scenery improvement with high TLOD so I just leave it 120. And on the ground you have to reduce TLOD to less than 50 to get much out a boost in FPS which gives quite degraded visuals. Even less reason to mess with OLOD.
I have a 4090 and the clouds look no different with or without this app for a given quality level. You may just be experiencing automatic cloud quality reduction (cloud sim value will be red) because your target FPS is too high for the current conditions, 4090 or not, but otherwise it makes no change to cloud textures.
You can turn off the auto cloud change. With a 4090 probably just leave them on Ultra. I have a 4080s and can run on Ultra or high but leave them on high to get higher TLOD. I suspect that AutoFPS is not changing them because it can hit the Target FPS without changing them. You can see the cloud quality in the AutoFPS screen.
I AM LOST!! I have been doing flight sim for 26years. I do not do any social media. NO ACCESS. The sight is?? confusing. Do you have to create an account which has things for developers????. In tapping on installer/ download?? it opens up the whole thing on its page??? NOTHING down loads. Everybody below is USING IT. I am OLD. I understand there are TWO and AUTOFPS is the one I want. DERN!!
The app is installed into a single folder. On my system it's in C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Roaming\MSFS2020_AutoFPS\ I exclude that folder from Defender's realtime scanning.
That’s great for the PC master race, but yet again where is the help for the series X/S Xbox player base who make up just as large a portion of the players?

Unfortunately even with a beastly super fast internet connection and a generous bandwidth, the Xbox series still to this day has a Russian roulette stability , really is pot luck if the sim wishes to run stable and smooth or in a lot of instances even at all! Perhaps just take the time to have a try playing on that platform for just a couple of weeks and you will see what I mean.

Anyone know how to stop this app running. It does not appear in TaskMaster which is super annoying. EDIT : had to restart the computer. Pls developer give us the option to properly close this app. Really is obnoxious.
The visuals are generally only being degraded where you can't see them anyway or your performance would otherwise be unacceptable and enhanced, sometimes significantly, when you can. I'm probably biased but I think that's better overall for users than what we currently have without it.
"triangulation calculations to draw clouds" ?!?!? What are you talking about? Clouds (and trees) are 100% shader based nowadays. Don't go into technical details that you don't understand. OK review on the program though.
Mark I’m slightly sorry for high jacking your amazing channel for a tirade. But VR wave sent me a defective pair of lenses, which I bought on your recommendation (they won’t stay seated at all, they just pop out with no movement at all). Since you advertise for them I think you should be aware they don’t back their product. I’m probably 6 emails in, included videos of the fault, and they will not respond to my simple request of sending them back for my money. I feel like I know you from watching all your videos and felt like you’d want to know, they won’t stand behind their product. Respectfully David.

The multi-threading support in DCS made a HUGE improvement. Would definitely be nice to see it implemented in FS2020

The trouble I had with locked 30fps is slow head movement using my head tracking software.

Object level of details. pause the game while flying low and play with this settings in the game settings and you will see what it does.

SU15’s Beta is a big step up in loading times as well as the general performance. I got a very noticeable difference.

Using this tool will be at the cost of graphical fidelity which I can't do, and why should I when it performs beautifully anyway?

Interesting tool, although my hardware is good enough to not need it, I can see where some people who have systems that struggle would find this very useful. I still find it interesting that cloud quality is still mentioned though because I've done extensive tests on my system, and there's literally zero fps difference between low detail and ultra detail clouds, and I'm not even running the best hardware. (i7-13700K, RTX 3080)
Clouds quality have a big impact, especial at thick mist.

Just worth noting that mods/hacks like this can effect msfs memory allocation, and could cause some instability. Also, because these can end up in your Community folder they may effect future msfs updates. Maybe this one reason posting mods like this and Smooth Flight are banned on the msfs user forum. Just saying that you need to take many so-called Game Changer TH-cam advice with a pinch of salt imho.
Fortunately, with my fairly high end i913900k/rtx4090 PC I don't find these, and even OpenXR Toolkit necessary (99% PCVR btw). If the msfs developer deems dynamic tolod/olod (and maybe other settings) to be useful I think that they will eventually be properly incorporated.
Terrain shadows is also a big one.
I am looking at other MSFS settings that could be reduced to boost performance when all other options have been exhausted, and this is one of them, but I need a few stars to align before this would come even close to reality, so no promises but there is hope.

although players that have RTX 4090, 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD, MSFS 2020 runs still stuttering because of loading every details from the simulator... and also depends if you fly in real weather conditions...

What use is it to reduce terrain detail on the ground where you need it and increase it at altitude where you won't notice? How does this interact with VR?
You might be thinking of OLOD but for TLOD it is the opposite of what you stated. Yes this works in VR.
I dont really understand why the TLOD decreasing is preferred versus clouds decreasing while going under 1000ft to land ? 🤔 it looks to me as the details of terrain are more important in this phase than clouds isn’t ?

I use AutoFPS to fly.
When I return to the world map after 1LEG, the AutoFPS add-on will call the
Simconnect and Session are displayed in red text.
I don't know why Simconnect is disconnected.
Maybe you have a solution?
Make sure you don't have a conflicting version of Mobiflight installed. If all else fails, you can always exit the app and restart it while still in MSFS and you should be good to go for your next flight.
Mark, why do you recommend to use TLOD or OLOD and not both at the same time?
I recommend when trying to establish best settings dial in TLOD or OLOD first then experiment with the other. Both have quite an impact and it is easy to lose your way. Once dialled in - use both if you need it.
Hello Mark, one question I installed auto fps, Mark how do I know if the auto fps is working, when I look on the desktop the top it says msfs 20/20 simConnect and session in red, if I'm playing msfs will it change to green, regards
This may be a rather naive question but how do I enable the AutoFPS screen to view in VR? I know its working because the visuals look so smooth. It's fantastic! I would just like to monitor what's happening.

Hi mark do you still use this and is it worth the download? And I also noticed that you are using DX12 with TAA mode is that correct.
5950x 6900xt but truth be told even that rig struggles to handle 5120x1440 resolution unless I turn a lot of stuff way down. As you said the world thread is singular, and that is common in pretty much all games because there are no tasks that can be threaded off that are totally independent of the world thread (called mainthread in msfs). Even the most thread spreading optimized games still eventually need to feed the material all those threads process into a world thread that combines it all into something for the GPU to process and that my friends is always where the bottleneck is on the CPU end of the system. That is why most games work better on systems with stupendous single core performance and fewer cores over systems with more cores that are not as fast.
5120x1440 is a demanding resolution. I'd say you want at least a 7900xtx to drive that resolution with MSFS.
@@caribbaviator7058 actually my GPU keeps up just fine - mainthread is always my bottleneck. I can see it when I enable the on screen statistics (FPS, frame time, etc.) with the performance limiter always indicating mainthread.
Kudos to the dev but why would you want the same LOD/altitude settings for a low level flight in an ultralight versus a high level flight in your PMDG 737? The original Dynamic LOD program lets you fine tune user created profiles based on your own system and to me that seems the ideal solution. I tried this version in VR and it simply locked my LOD at 50 no matter what framerate I was getting.
If you check Use Expert Settings, you can change that TLOD min to something different in about as long as it takes to pick another profile in the other app. In future, I may automate this version further by being able to have a profile per aircraft type, which would be even less effort.

Why the software does not maintain the target fps u set in the software ? Actual fpd are above than target fps why is it so ?
Works great except I have 1 problem, about 4 of my landings since I have used this, have the runway lights way above the field. I found a post about LOD settings can affect this. Anyone else?
I have heard this a few times but it is very rare. You can try setting the Alt TLOD base much higher than default 1000 ft so that TLOD settles well before MSFS has to draw runway lights, with the obvious side effect that TLOD will be at minimum much earlier in the final descent phase.

Why I still have low FPS , after using this app? I got 11 , for goodness sake....and I got an RTX 3060 grapfic card. I am surely clumsy in setting things up, but I feel sooo frustrated.

I heard good things about this, It's free to try out and play around with it. I run things on high on my system and I get like 20 FPS and max if lucky enough is 30FPS even on my RTX 3090 - I do not know how people can get stable 60FPS, even those that are on 3080 can get more FPS then me - SHAME

Absolutely. I've been critical of this tool for desktop use. If you don't understand why you are getting stutters then that should be resolved first, but for VR it's probably an even better use case. 👌

Have never seen the point of this and its predecessors. At altitude hard to see much scenery improvement with high TLOD so I just leave it 120. And on the ground you have to reduce TLOD to less than 50 to get much out a boost in FPS which gives quite degraded visuals. Even less reason to mess with OLOD.

I tried this for VR and clouds look strange from above. I have 4090 I guess not for me.
I have a 4090 and the clouds look no different with or without this app for a given quality level. You may just be experiencing automatic cloud quality reduction (cloud sim value will be red) because your target FPS is too high for the current conditions, 4090 or not, but otherwise it makes no change to cloud textures.
You can turn off the auto cloud change. With a 4090 probably just leave them on Ultra. I have a 4080s and can run on Ultra or high but leave them on high to get higher TLOD. I suspect that AutoFPS is not changing them because it can hit the Target FPS without changing them. You can see the cloud quality in the AutoFPS screen.

The app is installed into a single folder. On my system it's in C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Roaming\MSFS2020_AutoFPS\
I exclude that folder from Defender's realtime scanning.

Unfortunately even with a beastly super fast internet connection and a generous bandwidth, the Xbox series still to this day has a Russian roulette stability , really is pot luck if the sim wishes to run stable and smooth or in a lot of instances even at all! Perhaps just take the time to have a try playing on that platform for just a couple of weeks and you will see what I mean.

The visuals are generally only being degraded where you can't see them anyway or your performance would otherwise be unacceptable and enhanced, sometimes significantly, when you can. I'm probably biased but I think that's better overall for users than what we currently have without it.
For me it was just the opposite. The TLOD can run higher when I am airborne (automatically) and so improves the visuals.

Mark I’m slightly sorry for high jacking your amazing channel for a tirade. But VR wave sent me a defective pair of lenses, which I bought on your recommendation (they won’t stay seated at all, they just pop out with no movement at all). Since you advertise for them I think you should be aware they don’t back their product. I’m probably 6 emails in, included videos of the fault, and they will not respond to my simple request of sending them back for my money.
I feel like I know you from watching all your videos and felt like you’d want to know, they won’t stand behind their product.
