    Love the truck man, I have a 71 gmc 4 speed that that I’m building. It’s stripped now and I’m putting parts on as they arrive. JB twin stick is here any day for the t case. Look into those, you can control axles individually and pivot a big rig like ours by going front wheel drive and use park brake. Anyway….thanks for posting.

    Love your rig. Had a new 79 K5 blazer back then with a 400 SB, custom headers, Edelbrock 2101 and 625 carter. 10” lift with 40” Cepek monster mudders. 4.56 gears and had to weld the axle housings to the center diff because I spun the diff completely loose on the 12 bolt.
    Sure miss the Cepek stores!

    • @rockquestoff-road2839
      @rockquestoff-road2839  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahah man that sounds like an awesome blazer. I miss the old Dick Cepeks, Ground Hawgs, classic swampers that all the original guys used to run on their rigs. 400 sb is such a solid engine. I would never change mine for anything else. Only thing I would do now is probably a FiTech throttle body kit to replace the Holley carb and that’s it. Man I relate to the twisting axle tubes. So easy to twist stuff up in the rear end from breaking and bending center pins in the leaf springs to peeling the front of the back fenders when axle wrap pulled the old 37s up into the fender lol. So many good memories and lessons learned in this truck. I love it so much. Wish I could drive it more to keep it from slowly decaying. It takes so much maintenance to keep them running these days.

    Those 7th generation Suburbans are rare nowadays. They were built from 73 - 91 & same with the 2nd generation K5 Blazers & Jimmys & 3rd generation C/K series pickups, except the regular cab pickups were discontinued in 87 but just on the half ton & three quarter ton models. Then later in 89, the one ton regular cab pickups were discontinued.

      They are so capable! And you have a 88 so it has a stronger front frame section than mine...mine is a 4 inch all spring lift and a 1 inch body....you could easily just run a 4 inch with 37s and it will go a lot do aces with at least a Detroit locker in the rear

    Spool in the rear would eat up tires om the street and suck in the rain around corners. Detroit or air locker works well. Sometimes spool in the front makes it hard to steer, I prefer Detroit locker. Now the rub, What magician built you a 700r4 that would hold up. I have never seen one hold up on a adventure buggy that went off road in the rocks. They will hold with low to mid power on the street but off road I would be fearful of not getting home due to trans failure.
    Really like the truck and will build one for myself pretty soon with 4bt or 6bt cummins and nv4500 and a fire truck 3 to 1 np205. yes they made 3 to 1 np205 for brush fire trucks. Most were in 1.5 and 2 ton so you have to change the yokes. They also make a dana 70 front axle though pretty rare and bottom of the diff is lower to the ground. I think a super 60 from a 2005 and up high pinion will hold fine. I love my old fords but after owning a recovery service for years I think the 14 bolt gm is a touch stronger then the sterling rear axle. The gears seem to be anyway. The best poor boy rig I have ever seen is a stock xj on one tons. Strong axles and not enough power to break anything. Who ever wins with the most toys wins.

    • @rockquestoff-road2839
      @rockquestoff-road2839  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is so cool that they made a 3:1 np205 that is one thing I did not know...was familiar with the 70 front...Cummins is a great setup for a Sub...love mine...the spool makes it nigh impossible to steer when under load...needs the crossover steering and hydro assist next step...agreed on the rear Detroit but with 40s I have found it’s too much stress on the components to daily it...broke 3 leaf spring center pins in a row due to the wrapping of the axle...the 40s dont scratch or chirp on the street they have too much grip so it will wrap the spring...need a full ARB in the rear...the 700R4 was built in 2001 by a family friend with his out tranny business...special servos, clutches, torque convertor beefed with that nice 3.06 frost gear and the overdrive so I can run the 5.38s without it screaming at me 😉...having an auto has really saved me on several climbs that I have to be really technical on the rocks to fit the body through and if I had a stick I probably would have a few more dents than I have now haha...I have around 400 crank horsepower into it I’m guessing and it’s been a real champ the last 20 years...heavy truck but it’s really fun! Next step would be a Off Road Design doubler with my np203 and a Np205 to get the reduction I need to crawl without leaning on the torque convertor so hard 👆🏻

    Good idea to keep one hub unlocked mostly. If you get it in a bind and it is getting traction it will snap somthing, usually a front u joint. Nice set up tho. The 14 bolt is bullet proof and 400 small blocks are almost all gone.think dirt track guys snatched them all up.

    What do you do about transmission mount /crossmember going from 350 turbo to 700r4? actually i want to go from 350 turbo to 4l60e from my understanding same mount? idk. There is almost nothing about going with a tahoe vortec with 4l60 into a blazer

    • @rockquestoff-road2839
      @rockquestoff-road2839  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhhh i believe it still used the stock crossmember that was there with the original 350 trans…the crossmember bolts to the transfer case if I remember right?? I’ll have to get under there and double check it’s been too long…the bushings look like a capital letter C…the sit on metal “saddles”…I have a NP203 case…4L60 is just a 700r4 with electronics so it should work the same I would think.

    hey got a question for you hoping you can help me out i have a 1990 k5 blazer with just a 3" body lift on it and 35x12 15" tires on it ..what i want to no is do u have to change your steering arm when you just do a 3" body lift ...i really appreciate your feed back thanks

    • @rockquestoff-road2839
      @rockquestoff-road2839  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to change the steering arm for a 3 inch body lift! Body lift changes nothing on the suspension or steering geometry...only thing with a body lift is sometimes you have to lengthen the steering shaft from the steering wheel to the steering box

    • @thedobermangang3503
      @thedobermangang3503 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey i have a brand new telesconing steering shaft and new rag joint ..the reason i ask that is because i have a lot of play in my steering and i have put 2 rebuild gear boxes on there and still have the same problem i have everything under there brand new im thinking maybe i gotten two bad gear boxes it looks like its coming from the gear box.i have had my brlaer for along time and drove it out of town and did not use to have this play

    • @rockquestoff-road2839
      @rockquestoff-road2839  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yep if you have someone sit in the blazer and yank the steering back and forth you can lay under the front and see where the movement is...I would get a AGR SB2 box that’s what I have and it’s been amazing for 15 years with 37s and 40s...if the box ends up being fine then I would look at sway bar bushings and making sure they are TIGHT at the leaf spring mounting plates because they are kind of the track bar for the front end...then if you still are having play in the front end it’s time for ball joints on the front axle...with big tires ball joints wear faster...ball joints will cause random steering wander and looseness...hopefully it’s just some bad boxes you have gotten...(we went through 3 steering pumps from autozone before going with AGR) and you might ask look at PSC steeeirng boxes if you cannot get a hold of AGR...calling off road design would also give you excellent info if you like talking to people as well and they could sell you what you need and track down your issues

    • @thedobermangang3503
      @thedobermangang3503 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      is that box stronger and build better than the other gear boxes

    • @rockquestoff-road2839
      @rockquestoff-road2839  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the PSC or AGR boxes are built better and different than the stock boxes you get at autozone etc. they will work better with the bigger tires and won’t overheat and wear out prematurely

      I would to nowadays man...it was around $2300ish I believe...the transmission was built in 1999 so the 4L80s were not the dime a dozen swap they are now for sure 😆

    Total cost?

    • @rockquestoff-road2839
      @rockquestoff-road2839  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it was completely restored 15 years ago so its cost well over 35K spread out over many years....the dana 60 and 14 bolt FF swap and upgrades with lift, driveshafts, tires, gears and lockers would set you back roughly $6500ish if you did all the labor yourself like we did...

    Dana 60 and 14 bolt does not it a 1 ton. Springs make 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton.

      It has 1 ton skyjacker 4 inch springs all around our way… Truly makes it a one ton…and actually one ton springs without the proper axles and full floating rear bearings etc will not make your truck 1 ton either…got to have it all…. 1 ton brakes, 1 ton axles, 1 ton steering, 1 ton bearings etc.

    I really enjoy these non-Jeep videos for overland building. I am currently working on a '99 GMC Yukon SLE 4wd, and have finished the mechanical rebuilds and mostly completed the exterior build as well. I am starting on the interior now. th-cam.com/video/wC6Dv6tBao0/w-d-xo.html

    Well nice truck....please take many pictures of this beautiful truck....
    Paint is Godawful but that's okay...
    You'll not have worry though...
    It'll be totaled within 7 months after you give it to him....seriously man ..I'm not trashing your boy...
    I'm sure he's a fine young man.....
    Look at the statistics....
    They MOSTLY ALL ....wreak....
    They just can't help it....
    I know this from personal practice...
    However I've heard that its true... Both my kids wreaked as did 99.9% of their friends..
    Remember its REALLY, REALLY, REALLY HARD TO TEXT AND DRIVE

      Texting is a big issue among adults and kids I agree...I never wrecked in my early years, neither did my brother or wife actually either but I will love my kids the same either way...everyone has an accident or 2 in their life it’s just a truck ;)

    Don't ever sell it you would regret in a heartbeat if you did. I have an 85 K5 and I sold it to my brother for pretty much nothing and told him let me know whe he sold it and he sold it from underneath me
