Those old 454s are a beast. My step dad had an early 80s with no cat and I had a jetski that took 110 octane (low-lead) premixed fuel. Well, he ran that 2 stroke premixed 110 octane with lead and the thing just ran like nothing. Also, welcome to the west coast/desert. You'll find lots of old vehicles with no rust. My 05 Sierra and 05 Ram both have no rust while others on the east coast have rotted rockers, cab corners, bedsides, etc.

Wow, it's amazing to see you taking on the challenge of restoring and fixing a classic car like the 1973 Chevy Suburban 454! It takes a lot of dedication, patience, and skill to bring an older vehicle back to life, and you should be proud of yourselves for taking on such a rewarding project. As you work on restoring and fixing your Suburban, remember that every step you take is bringing you closer to your goal of a fully functional and beautiful vehicle. There may be times when the work feels overwhelming or frustrating, but keep pushing through and don't give up! You'll learn so much along the way and develop valuable skills that you can apply to future projects. And when you finally get to drive your Suburban down the road, feeling the power of the engine and the wind in your hair, you'll know that all of your hard work was worth it. Keep up the great work and enjoy the journey!
Man that's nice, pretty deluxe with rear air. My parents bought one used in 1974, a 1973 with a 350, it was burnt orange with wood side trim, yours looks like it may have originally been the same color.
My family owned a '76 Blazer (basically the 2-door version of this beast). We may have just gotten a lemon, but it turned out to be the single worst auto purchase we ever made. Within a few months of buying it (new), the fuel pump went out, the underside started to rust out, the fuel gauge stopped working, the rear window crank mechanism broke... I could go on and on. To add insult to injury, it got about 10-12 mpg combined city/highway. By the time the car was less than three years old, it seemed like at least 2/3 of the engine had been replaced. I ended up selling the car for next to nothing and was just happy to be rid of it. That said, I did love the way the engine roared... when I could actually get the thing started.
I was impressed with your ingenuity on getting the stuck cam/valve train to spin to line up the timing gears and also the rocker stud shim trick to bypass the groove worn in it. Nicely done! Can't wait to see if the Suburban can make it to PA!

Makes me want to get in my garage and pull my 454...friend had 5k on a camper and apparently issue with guage... engine seized...dealer put in new engine and he gave me the old one complete with heads and all but carb. Needs pistons knocked out, bored and put together...a 1980 type version...been sitting as no time to work on it. Have my 70 ss454 monte carlo with 68k miles parked and time to get the rust on windows fixed and painted and running...have owned since 1971...Impressed with your time spent on this and the work you did...
It remind me so much, working with my dad, in the garage, in my country Argentina. So many memories, come to mind. You get to do, what you love and you have your wife helping, and not complaining.

I LOVE that you bring gus on all your adventures, whoever said to leave him home is wrong. He gets to see the world and be with his mom and dad all day. Way better than being without mom and dad for all that time. He loves it too, you can tell when your dog hates something and Gus man does NOT hate these adventures. Hes a good boy. Also, love these south west will it run and drive home adventures. I hope you do these a lot more in the future.
Sending good vibes that we'll be watching you two road-tripping it back to PA! You two (three including the Gus man) are great! I really enjoy being able to just sit back and forget about the world while I watch y'alls videos. Chris, thanks for taking the time to show us all the "ins and outs" of the issues and good luck with the extra flip flops!! hahaha! Y'all take care - thank you for all that you do to get these published for us to watch, we enjoy it! Darren in TX
My Dad had a 1976 Suburban with 454, Holley carb and an aftermarket cam put in it. We traveled all through the West Coast on vacations every few years pulling a large (about 20 foot) Aljo travel trailer. That monster would pull the trailer up hills going 75 MPH. That is a very worthy vehicle of rebuilding to it's glory you have there. I never got the chance to drive it as I wasn't old enough. I did drive the 1970 Mercedes 300SEL 6.3 at 150MPH many times.
Great episode! Don't give up! Looking forward to seeing you guys drive that battleship back home. Most people would have given up when they realized the distributor wasn't moving. I admire your commitment! Keep up the great work and content!

Absolutely great content. Quickly becoming the top of my list for enjoyment. This guy is so knowledgeable and super cool, laid back kinda guy. Oh yeah, I love the dachshund!
I bought a 67 Chevy Impala from it's 1st owner and he was a believer in marvel mystery oil. Every oil change he would use it and once a month in the gas. When I sold it the new owner brought the engine to work with the heads off. They looked like they were brand new!!! Cylinder wals perfect. Only a little wear! The engine has 117.000 miles and looked like it had 5000 miles!!! Not kidding!
Great content. You and Jen and Gus re always a joy to watch. You’ve inspired me to do a couple of restorations myself. Blessings y’all…be careful and have fun.
I'm not a hatter but you started backwards roflmfao ..... u always , always always first check engine being frozen up , see u could have lubed up cylinders b4 going to get tires and rims , u got rookie rookie rookie written all over you .... .... you don't even sound like a experienced mechanic
You never disappoint brother,my nerves woulda been wrecked having those issues in my driveway let alone across the country. Sending her to get you some gas in a tesla, well played.
If it were me, I’d vote to throw jb weld on that intake, and start the trip home, if it starts drinking water, see if you can find another intake and throw it on. I love the mad max style of repairs. I know you could get that thing home, you have the skills to do it. The only question in my mind is if you want to do it during your vacation. I can’t wait for the next update.
definitely a replacement situation not jb weld lol. Jb weld isnt going to work sticking to more corrosion. What happens when it leaks, now youre on the road with no intake manifold available... And limping it along isnt going to work since its going to put water directly into the oil, not burn it in the cylinders....
Watched the video with pleasure. Until recently, I did not believe that this old Suburban would go. You guys are really great! And Jane, besides being beautiful, also keeps her in a good mood! Best regards from Russia.
Very interesting to see the difference between a "dry state" revival and a "snow state" revival... trading off rust and corrosion for crunchy plastic and perished rubber. Wonder if there is a place where you can avoid both headaches? Of course, Gus steals the show! Looking forward to part 2 of this adventure!
I agree with the rest of the crew. Great content, you always make time for personal time. I am relentless when it comes to getting something running or a project finished. I won't stop till it's done. Having a woman like Jen is so awesome for you, not only to support you in your venture, but takes interest, and puts up with the craziness. As a fellow gear head always trying to see the potential in even the most hopeless of vehicles, many women have bailed on me, because I spent too much time doing what I love, and not enough laying in bed watching movies, or whatever they thought we should be doing. It's a thin line, and can sometimes be a deal breaker if the woman you love has no interest in being in the garage with you. The sad part of it all is when you finally have the freedom to spend late nights in the garage to make junk work again, it's not as fun when you're alone doing it. Guess long story short, and I reckon most would agree, you two are lucky to have each other. We love ya, and always enjoy the adventures
Don't worry brother, just keep your head up and you'll find the right one at some point. For me, it seems more like a modern-day issue especially when it comes to finding the right one. Personally, it has become so bad that I prefer to go solo and just let life happen regardless. So, social media can be both good and bad for society. Good as in more access to educational content like this fine channel and bad for... well... letting social media mess up society in many other aspects of life. It's a win-some, loose-some deal.
I hate that you have to experience the hardships, but I can’t help but be in awe watching you run through the diagnostics. This is a masterclass in keeping the faith haha
Chris, Jenn and Gus: I like the Suburban, though it's a bit rough here and there. The timing chain and stuck lifters would have stopped many pretenders out there. Definitely looking forward to part #2 :)
Chris: A few years back a guy from Reading was cleaning out his hunting cabin up in Potter or Sullivan county and he got the hantavirus. He died in the hospital. One of the problems is that it’s so rare east of the Mississippi that doctors don’t spot it right off. Probably not much that you can do with Gus and the chickens but I had a dog get so sick that he had to overnight in the vet hospital. At the time we blamed it on eating Canada goose poop but we never were sure.
Loved this! My dad had a ´73 when I was getting old enough to really get into cars and engines, it was one of the first cars I ever drove when being about 10 years old. (not in traffic, of couse) I have fond memories of crawling around that engine bay. Too bad you ran into some obstacles with this one! But I'm positive you'll sort it out. Thanks for uploading!
It looked a dawdle but turned out to be a pain. The big man sussed it out as usual. Great work, brilliant channel.
Those were some good people you were dealing with. I love how Jenn is all smiles the whole time. The Suburban is my favorite. You seem like a great guy and I like the content so far. Earned a sub.
No way that was an hour! I just got motivation to get my 2002 suburban running. Thanks Chris!
Great video Chris and Jennifer
i'm not even a car guy but watching your process is amazing.
Chris this is my favorite Will it Run episode and I’ve seen em all. Crazy how much you did with just hand tools! And that old suburban is really sweet.
My first video from y’all and I’m a fan, I got to say I like how you actually show the work you do and take the time to explain it all, thank you.
Love watching your new video. Such a great mechanic. Love to see Jen and the gus man. Keep em coming mate. Can't wait for part 2 now. Love you all ❤
This is one of the greatest cars ever made ! Until 1999 Chevy Suburban is the best ! Chris is such a great patient guy ! Jen is one of the rarest good women to find. Keep up the good work ! Love from Libya !
if the world was full of Jen's it would be such a better place, she seems to be down for whatever and always happy!
I have owned several Suburbans and currently own a 96 Big Block K20 Suburban, so I am interested in seeing you fix this and drive it back home. Chevys back then were so much easier to work on. Maybe you can find a junkyard intake? I enjoyed the episode.
Hay Chris can't wait to see part 2 interested in seeing you drive it home tom Dan CT
Sweet ride. 73 Suburban with a 454. Growing up our dad had a 74 C30 utility truck with the same exact motor. Love these old chevys. 😊
You’re the man I’d want with me on a road trip! You make the timing chain replacement seem like a normal everyday chore! Happy trails.
So it’s a wet Sunday here in the Uk and I’m so looking forward to watching this . Love these type videos and honestly it could be twice as long and I would be happy . Love everything you guys do 👍
i am in England, just came across this channel by accident and its also the type i like to watch.. esp as wind and rain so bad i cant work on my Japanese 4x4s, old Toyota pick up and Pajero Mitsubishi..
So admire your persistence, fortitude and skills..You would have been such an asset on the wagon trains..It's your can do attitude, priceless, well done. Made America Great..!
Watching from Fiji Island in the south pacific ❤
Great job guys. Hope you get it home!
Absolutely great content. Quickly becoming the top of my list for enjoyment. This guy is so knowledgeable and super cool, laid back kinda guy. Oh yeah, I love the dachshund!
I think Gus is going to need his own channel. Such a scene stealer lol. Another great video, Can't wait to see more from you guys.👍
I know very little about auto mechanics. But I watched every second of your video. Very entertaining.
Wow, I was riveted to your diagnosis, when you cranked that over my jaw dropped!!
You could do the same, just pay them enough, lol
Don't worry brother, just keep your head up and you'll find the right one at some point. For me, it seems more like a modern-day issue especially when it comes to finding the right one. Personally, it has become so bad that I prefer to go solo and just let life happen regardless. So, social media can be both good and bad for society. Good as in more access to educational content like this fine channel and bad for... well... letting social media mess up society in many other aspects of life. It's a win-some, loose-some deal.
Awesome truck, hope to see more! Great attitudes and perseverance make for another great video! Thanks Chris and Jen!!!
I’m a new fan. I’ve never seen someone so knowledgeable and not throwing wrenches or dropping F-bombs.
You are good at what you do…..great stuff
Your fly and drive videos are some of the best content on TH-cam. Can’t wait for the next one
You guys are so fun to watch. I love the adventure road trip feel and all the fixes along the way!
wow, we had the identical suburban back in the early 80's ,even the same color and 454 engine . Brings back a lot of memories
I love videos like this, just watching someone work on a car as if I was the Kid watching a dad work on a car and learning along the way.
I hate that you have to experience the hardships, but I can’t help but be in awe watching you run through the diagnostics. This is a masterclass in keeping the faith haha
Dog is cute, truck is sweet, wife is hot. All around good combination.
Chris, Jenn and Gus: I like the Suburban, though it's a bit rough here and there. The timing chain and stuck lifters would have stopped many pretenders out there.
Definitely looking forward to part #2 :)
Brought back some memories of Dad’s old Chevys and 454s
Chris:
A few years back a guy from Reading was cleaning out his hunting cabin up in Potter or Sullivan county and he got the hantavirus.
Greetings from Sweden
