    Thank you for your compression release mechanism video. Just what I needed. Mine wasn't broken, but the valves were adjusted to about 8 thousands. Enough to keep the compression release from working. I set the valves to lose 4 exhausts and snug 4 intake, and the engine starts up perfectly. I bought the tractor from the scrap yard, so I didn't know it's history except it was in very good condition. The stuff people throw away nowadays. Thanks again!

    I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Down-to-earth, although not required. The part that I enjoyed the most was how you went over what you were about to do ahead of time. You made it look easy with your years of experience. Definitely a good experience for the viewer. All my questions were answered.

    Talk about designed to fail. Everything is cheap on these mowers except the price. Just bought a good looking used one. All the symptoms present. Broke all my rules of "Want to see it crank, Want to see it go forward and back." I can take care of everything else.
    I've watched a few vids on this subject. Thank you for being a real mechanic. You set valve clearance the same way I've done it for years. This video is a great help. Thanks

      I would like to ask a question on something I'm not clear about. I have a twin cylinder. Checked it today and no blip on the intake valve. Set the lash to .004 and started seeing the valve blip open. Set the lash the same on the other head but no blip. My question is, Does it only decompress on 1 cylinder? Thanks again.

  • @LivInternationalHQ
    @LivInternationalHQ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    Important!!. Follow the evaluation steps carefully. I skipped the check for the BUMP on the intake valve (as was explained very well in the video). The mower was doing exactly what is typical of the "broken compression release". Locking up on trying to start.... I ordered a new cam and disassembled the mower. To my surprise....cam was good. Spent the weekend with the project. Cleaned everything, put it back together, adjusted the valves and it runs great....I'm pretty sure that the intake valve was out of adjustment enough that the compression release wasn't opening the intake valve properly while trying to start. At least I now have a clean mower that is running great. The video was excellent, and helped with disassembly and reassembly. I hope this may someone like me that often jumps to conclusions during the diagnosis.

      I had a mower that was very low on power, I checked the valve adjustment, was shocked it had over 50 thousand clearance on both valves. I adjusted the valves, it ran better than it had in years, unfortunately it started blowing oil out all over the place. Took the engine apart the top compression ring broke in 3 places. I replaced the engine, a Briggs 12.5 horsepower with a Kohler V twin 25 horsepower. Runs great now

    I had a 12.5 horsepower Briggs on a 40 inch cut that was very low on power. I readjusted the valves. That made a very noticeable difference! The valves were way out of adjustment. The problem was, about 30 minutes later it started blowing oil out all over. In about 5 minutes it nearly emptied all the oil.
    On tear down, I found the top compression ring was broke in 3 places, the cylinder was wore by over 15 thousands.
    I do have to admit, the mower had been used hard and long , too hard and too long.
    I wound up putting a Kohler V twin 25 horsepower engine on it. Best mower I ever had. Just one thing if anyone wants to try that the biggest problem was coming up with a pulley to drive the mower blades. I could have used an electric PTO, instead I used a piece a PTO ,the lower part and had the 3 parts welded together. I had a machine shop do the welding, that bottom pulley runs true. That was the major problem. The rest was easy, even the engine mounting plate was pre drilled and pretty much a bolt on. Ok that's an over statement, the exhaust was easy except I now have duel exhaust instead of single.

    The one I did yesterday, the valves were not moving at all. The compression release had fallen off, and wiped out the cam and timing gear. Briggs should be ashamed for selling something with a design flaw like this, then leaving it uncorrected for years. Although this is a relatively simple repair, most homeowners are not going to tackle this. Once this compression release breaks (especially if it wipes out the internals), their $2000 mower they bought 4 years ago is junk to them, and they are forced to replace it with the same mower for $4000 today.

It ran fine for around an hour, the the engine started to kinda wobble then BANG. It immediately stopped and just a bit of oil came out the muffle and smoked a little. Hadn't smelt burning oil or saw smoke till right after it failed.
    Im wondering if youd be willing to tell me your thoughts. Is it a blown piston? Cam? Valves?

      I'm a dealer, so I get them from one of my suppliers. You may can get a OEM cam on ebay or go to your local mower shop. Please stay away from aftermarket.

      Look up the correct part numbers using your model, type and code located on the valve cover. Look them up on Parts Tree.

    Question on the pto seal there's a round spring
    We're is this located on the seal when you're putting new one on . I put new one on and looked closely for roll no roll but 2 days later had oil on floor so obviously seal rolled or spring wasn't in right place. ( HELP)

    Thanks man, great video. I've never taken apart a mower engine so your video was my guide. I didn't see the "bump" so I decided to tear into it and sure enough, the compression release thingy had a broken stud and separated from the camshaft. It really is an easy job if you take your time, keep tools and parts clean and organized, and make sure you get OEM parts. Don't get the cheap stuff or you will be doing this job again. The motor is not that heavy and comes out pretty easy so don't be intimidated by this job. Thanks again!

    On Outbord motors to put in big seals I use a pice of PVC pipe the same size as the seals I have that problem on my brand new crapsman motor that doesn’t even have 20 hours on it 👍🏻🤘🏻

    Awesome video, from the video angles to the easy to understand instructions. I kind of knew what I was doing, but now I'm sure. Thank you Sir, this was very useful video and I like it best of all the one that showed how to replace a camshaft.

    Question. I have same engine. Had hard time getting it to turn over and start. Finally did. I cut about 20 minutes then it just died and made some kind of noise. Now it spins with the starter but will not run. Do you think same problem? If so, can the compression release get stuck open? Also, can you give me rough estimate of cost of all the parts you replaced and best place to order from? Great video

    I can't understand why Briggs & Stratton doesn't get with the times and use the overhead cam design, LIKE HONDA DOES and do away with the push rods and that cheap faulty camshaft which is a recipe for disaster. Briggs used to be pretty good. Good video.

    So out of curiosity would there be any issues if you just pulled out the governor and did not put it back in while doing this if it is broken or you just don't want to have to worry about all that plastic breaking up in the future?

    • @Mrs.T-bone
      @Mrs.T-bone 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The governor controls the revolutions of the engine. The rpm will remain too high and over rev the engine causing failure. Good luck!

    Is it necessary to change that oil seal/gasket (part no: 795387) on the crankshaft if it looks ok? That step looks like a pain. Some other say you only need to if it’s bad, but I see you did it even though it looked ok. What’s your thoughts?

    So….why can’t you just replace the compression release mechanism, instead of a perfectly good camshaft?? Wouldn’t a gear puller be cheaper than an entire new camshaft, just to replace the compression release???

    I have a question . Do the small b&s engines have compression release on them I have a 4hp 625exi that is a (c u next Tuesday) to start . I’ve seen the battery started version of this engine have it but wasn’t sure if the pull start version did . Warm regards from Australia

      Awesome!! Just take your time the clean up takes 3 times as long as the repair. You can use a razor blade 1st then move on to wire brush on a drill or what ever you have available. The caution ⚠️ do your best not to gouge the aluminum or hold wire wheel on drill in one place too long. We need to make sure it will seal and not leak oil. Take your time, you will be fine. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
