Taryl are you sure it bumps the exhaust valve and not the intake valve for compression release? On my 8hp it bumps the intake valve.

I have a serious lawnmower engine question for the master mechanic. I have a 16.5 hp Briggs & Stratton Intek opposed twin but I am contemplating rebuilding.
      It is a 42a707 2238E1.
I was going to buy a zero turn but in the area where I live in South Carolina there have been a rash of people breaking into buildings and stealing these things from all manners of locations over the past three or four years.
Would you recommend overhauling this engine? And if so, where would be the best place to get all the parts, i.e. pistons, rings, overhaul gasket set, new camshaft, new carburetor, new stater? Are the jugs available for this and would I benefit anything by going over size on the Pistons?
Enjoy your program thank you very much!

I have a 21 HP motor on a craftsman tractor and could not get it to start. After attempting to adjust the valves (which did not solve the problem) I found an online article suggesting it might be due to a broken compression release mechanism on the camshaft.
I'm not a mechanic and have never 'opened' an engine before but I successfully changed the camshaft by following this great detailed video. I ordered the parts on Amazon. What it doesn't show is how to remove the motor from the tractor but that turned out to be very obvious and simple to do as well, even for me. PS - this is my first ever feedback on You Tube but since I'm very happy with the results I thought I should provide this positive feedback.

Just finished this repair up. Thanks for the video, I wouldn't have attempted it otherwise. Struggled with this mower not starting, replacing all parts: battery, starter, resetting the valves, nothing worked. This was was very easy, especially since the pulley just slipped off, no torch required. 30 minutes to pull the engine, 30-45 to open, find all the metal parts that were chewed up inside, clean up and reassemble. Will put it back on the mower tomorrow. Awesome. There's your dinner.

Taryl, I had a problem getting my John Deere LA105 with Briggs 18.5 HP engine started and through google and you tube found out that my engine has a compression release and the starting problem was because it was not working and I needed to change the cam. I may not have taken this job on but after watching your video I jumped right in and the job was a piece of cake. Your instructions were right on you were very detailed and left nothing out. Fortunately the lower pulley came right off because with my mower you can not remove the engine until the pulley is removed. I got the parts from Pro Parts Direct and they had all the parts in stock and they came in very fast, not quite as fast as in your video but pretty darn fast. Thanks so much for the great instructional video and the many laughs.

Great video, I've got a problem with a motor, it's a 22hp, Briggs, ohv, twin cylinder. It will not turn over all of the way, acts like it hits a wall when turn the key on, When I pull the plugs it spins freely. After doing some research, every thing that I have read states it's a compression release problem. The first thing I did was checked the gap on the valves, .005 on the exhaust and .004 on the intake. I pulled the sump cover off and found out that there is NO compression release on the cam , I tried to do a visual check on the cam lobes but could not see any difference in them. I thought about closing the gap in the exhaust valves but I'm afraid I'd bend a push rod,,,,,,any ideas on this.

While adjusting the valves on a Briggs 27hp with 277 hours, I noticed the adjusted valve would move up and down and loose it's .004" clearance when it should be on the "flat" of the camshaft. Used the top dead center approach as well as Teryl's. Teryl here explained and "showded" me that the camshaft was wearing out (highs and lows on the flat part of the camshaft). Yep, Teryl knows his Briggs engines. I just wish Teryl would work with the new and reorganized Briggs Company to help them start producing a quality product again! Brigg's CEO took a 5 million dollar bonus, filled bankruptcy, and took a hundred year old business and flushed it and it's worker down the drain. Thanks Teryl - love your audacious and fact filled videos!

Thanks for your video. I just had to replace my cam shaft and your video helped tremendously. Surprisingly my cam shaft was still intact but the pin that creates the valve flutter for compression release was worn smooth. Once replaced and I manually turned the engine over...... I saw the valve flutter that everyone describes when the compression release is working. Engine starts great now. Local repair shop quoted $500 for repair and discouraged me from fixing because of the tractors age. At 16 years old the tractor has more years to live.

Where were U 20 years back when everyone had to read the detailed engineers version from B&S, Kohler, etc. in print. Most of it was hard to understand, harder to actually do and usually ended up having to be taken apart because a detail or two about the proper disassembly or reassembly was left out. Your videos show it all including the shortcuts to making the whole thing go back together without the long version in the repair manual. Five ***** to you for the effort you put into your videos to make them with just enough detail to get the job done. And OH yes video has just enough humor to keep it interesting.

I am having the same issue and having to replace the camshaft. Your video is extremely helpful. The only thing I would recommend to everyone out there (like myself) that is gun shy to turning a wrench, be careful when removing the original camshaft. The taps and possibly the push rods can come loose. Make certain the push rods are seated against the rocker arms correctly when you reinstall the new camshaft. I found this out the hard way unfortunately. But once I got the new camshaft in place, it held the taps/push rods in place (seating correctly against the rocker arms). I pray that the new camshaft will last me another 3-4 yrs. The compression release section looks to be cheaply engineered.

Thank you so much for this video and your valve adjustment videos! I hit a stump with my B&S/Craftsman mower. Did all troubleshooting possible, until I was left with having to check the camshaft. Never done any of this stuff before! I have it all opened up and sure enough, the spring loaded arm on the camshaft and the timing gear is broke off. I am just wondering if you or someone reading can tell me how to go about cleaning out the compartment to make sure there is no metal debris back inside the hard to get places? Also, I see you sort of disregarded torque specs on the case bolts. Do you just put them on nice and tight then and do not use a torque wrench? Also, it looks like they had red loctite on the oil plug threads. Should I put some blue on that or not put anything on that?

These are the worst engines.. the compression release with it's cheap spring will always fail and the head gaskets as well . When the compression release gets slung off, most of the time they'll get into teeth in your cam and break several teeth and into your governor causing debris everywhere in the engine. Shame on B&S ...

Throw the plastic oil drain in the trash and use an NPT pipe plug (which Briggs RETURNED to) because the plastic abortions fall off and wreck engines. I found out the hard way. Easy way if you don't remember pipe sizes is remove the fitting on the crankcase when you change oil and use it for a sample at the hardware store.

  • @Comm0ut
    @Comm0ut 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

That quick drain cost me a piston and rings. New Briggs engines come with an NPT plug as they should. If ya want to get fancy a nipple and an elbow make oil draining even easier because you can put the drain where you want it.
If you paint the shaft and inside of the crank pulley with anti-seize they slide right off next time. BTW that pulley isn't hardenable so armchair metallurgists should post a Rockwell test video if they're so sure. All metal properties are testable.

After a nee carb, coil & plug. New filter and blew out the line- even higher octane. Flywheel key ok. Adjusted valves from 3-5, 5-7 at each thickness..lol. still popping- backfiring at times. Can mow a good size lawn without shutting off. Rebuilt old carb and with a new one still nothing changes. Hoping a cam will fix it...😁

Hello Taryl, I'm very new at small engine repair, my father passed away and I inherited his lawn mower shop,so I have a crazy question for you. I have a Briggs and Stratton 18.5 hp engine with a bad cam lobe. The engine has a oil filter and pump also on it. I am switching the cam out of a 17.5 B & S engine that does not have an oil filter or pump, and I know the cam I want to use does not have the slot in it for the 18.5 with the oil filter and pump. My question is, can I switch the sump cover from the 17.5 engine (it doesn't have a pump}, to the 18.5hp engine sump cover that has an oil filter and pump?

That's how I do my valve adjustments, with one valve open and one closed. I've done that for awhile.

Taryl, I have a 2015 B&S 15.5 hp, 500cc motor. It blew a timing gear which got caught under the cam and ripped 3 teeth off of it. Replaced it all, all seals, gaskets, etc. I have been having reoccurring oil leaks. I was able to seal the sump gasket up, but it is now leaking out of the PTO seal. I put the gasket material around the outside as in your seal video. I am wondering if I didn't put the seal down far enough, as I didn't want to go too far down. Any suggestions are appreciated, thank you.

Would oil with high zinc content be appropriate for prolonged cam life here ? I’ve always just used synthetic oil for automobiles already in garage. I’ve used vr1 race oil in a small block with flat tappets. Also have zinc additive handy. What would you recommend ?

    Hello,
Can you give me the tightening torques for the engine 286707-1142-E1?
I can't find it anywhere in the Illustrative parts List and the Operators Manual, especially the one on the piston rod where there are two different bolts on the connection to the crankshaft!
    thanks in advance

jfc are all these motors made by the same parent company, or at least designed by them? They all look the same in and out. Maybe little tiny differences, but for the most part, intek singles, krolher, kamasaki, same shit different name.

I understand how you need to replace the with identical camshaft on engine with oil filter/pump but what if you have bad camshaft with no oil filter (2012 Timemaster)? My Briggs 8.75 camshaft needs replacing. I have a good camshaft from a JD 8.75 that has the notch for oil pump. Would it hurt to put this in the engine even though the notch isn't doing anything?

Hay tray what is the difference between crafman15.5 without oil filter. And the ones that do. For camshaft. Why can't we find them. Talking about relive spring..

Scraping the remains of that stupid gasket off took literally half the job time, like a full hour-1.5 hours! Otherwise, not a big deal. Like he says, don't forget to check the valve clearances before starting the engine- mine were both at zero. Love the videos, Taryl!

Taryl, great job. Oil pump and splash? Ya they call it a Pressure Lubricated Engine but just goes to bottom bearing if that. do you really need pressure to that bearing sitting under oil? Is this a gimmick Taryl? Seems to me it is. My filter does not get hot even after the mower has been running for awhile makes ya wonder how much oil is going through it. Gimmick I'd say. Residential light duty don't need no filter but if it gone to come with one make it real. Like your work.

Quick question Taryl.... Whats the difference between a 25 hp intek twin and a 23 hp intek, besides 2 hp? Is it the bore and stroke? Reason i ask is because, i have a 25 hp Intek twin, and i need to replace the rod, piston and crank, i think. I found a 23 hp crank, rods and piston s on Ebay, but i wasnt sure if they would work? Thanks Jim

i've had the experience where the cam is not broken, but acts like it is. I opened it up, and everything was intact. the cam had everything where it was supposed to be. So what was the problem?, I put another cam in, but wondering what makes a cam not work right if everything is intact on the cam.?

Some very sound advice. You are so right about the valves, On say your Spitfire four pot engine , rule of nine .Number one closed , number eight open . No different to a mower engine.Oh a i see 5000 subscribers , nice one.

I had to replace my cam because of the compression release. A year later my cam was worn like the one you replaced. When I was putting my 3rd cam in I noticed that the pot metal from the first cam (about the size of a BB) was in the hole that the cam goes in. It might have blocked some oil circulation causing my cam lobe to be wiped. PS I also cut my bank in the front yard.

So true we all know we shouldn't do this or that but some times its the most feasible option, next time do it "Their" way and charge hourly lol Good stuff learned a lot from you, I guess I should probably buy some shirts soon because you've made me a few bucks so far.

I have a Craftsman yard mower. The compression release has broken off the cam twice in two and a half years. I tried to talk to Briggs about the problem but they wont even admit there is a problem. When I asked if they would buy the parts, they asked for my engine number. I gave them the one on the muffler and the one under the seat. I also gave them the number that the technicion that fixed it the first time had on his receipt. They said my tractor does not exist. My question is, does this happen often with this engine Model 33R877. Any thoughts to make me feel better about this crap.

Thanks for great videos. This one gave me the courage to attempt a repair on my Ariens with a 20 HP briggs. I got the motor off the tractor and disassembled today. What I found was the counter weight for the decompression release had broken apart. The cam itself looked like new to bad it is a cheap design on the decompression. I have ordered the camshaft seals and gaskets to complete the repair. Thanks again I would not have done this without your video.

Fitted lots of those camshafts and most didn’t last any length. So what would you think of skimming the piston and reduce compression until engine it will turn free enough to start. I would fit original camshaft without decompression system which would all ready be broken anyway.
