  • Second time checking out Home Free, first time with this song.
    I really dug their Ring of Fire and many recommended Man of Constant Sorrow as my next reaction. They didn't disappoint. Loved the swampy and muggy vibe of the video with their stunning voices and harmonies.

      He’s officially the band’s baritone, but he was the bassist for his past group, Street Corner Symphony, and also covers the bass background notes when Tim is taking a lead. He sings from F#1 to F5, which is a pretty great range.

    Man of Constant Sorrow was first published in 1913. It was first recorded in 1928, and has been done by many different people over the years, including the Stanley Brothers, Bob Dylan, and Ginger Baker.

    Hi Lukas! As this is only your second vid reaction for Home Free, let me give you a bit of background. There were a few years between Ring of Fire (ROF) and this version of Man of Constant Sorrow. A personnel change occurred. In ROF video, the fifth Home Free guy was Chris Rupp (beat boxer Adam Rupp’s brother and founding member of Home Free) who was a tenor to upper baritone for group. He left to pursue other opportunities. The newest fifth guy in this video is another Adam...Adam Chance who is known as Chance (bearded guy with hat in back) because...well, there’s already an Adam. He’s a natural baritone and upper bass and was making the jaw harp sounds in this song.
    There is now a richness in this group’s overall sound (in my opinion) that was missing beforehand and which was filled in with Avi in ROF. There is resplendent depth in the lower notes with Chance and Tim Foust working together as there has always been in the upper octaves with Rob Lundquist (fully bearded without hat in front) as tenor singing with high tenor Austin Brown (lead on this song).
    They are so talented, and I am always moved, inspired, or simply happy after listening to them sing. Pretty soon you’ll be a Home Fry too, tater tot.

    • @venus5019
      @venus5019 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Totally agree. I would add and it frustrates me, being a bass/bottom line lover many didn't realize how much the bass contributes. In 'Ring' when Tim is singing lead, Avi is singing a complicated bass line, when Avi is singing lead, Tim is singing a complicated bass line.
      Having Chance as baritone, frees up Tim to take lead without sacrificing the bottom. 'Mayday' & other songs one can hear the bass line as Tim is doing lead. Chris was a founding member, but his range was more middle to upper range. Hearing Chance's natural speaking voice can hear the deep & lower timber of his voice. Chris was a good singer, Chance has a more powerful wider range. The biggest difference (not better/worse) is that Pentatonix the 3 members are singing around in the same registers, with a bass. Here, three can sing around in the same registers, but then break off with not just a strong bass, but baritone covers more range. I like Pentatonix, but their sound is more higher, where here, it can covers full wide.

    Their cover of the O-Jays “Love Train” is a fun non-country, non-holiday cover of theirs. But, my biggest recommendation for them is their “Do You Hear What I Hear?” Yes, it is a Christmas song, but how they arranged it and their performance are just sublime, and I listen to it year-round.

    Sorry this is so late. So glad you liked this. Three of the boys are from the south and this was filmed in Alabama (yes, that’s a gator). They all have tremendous voices. Helplessly Hoping, How Great Thou Art, Mayday, O Holy Night, Do You Hear What I Hear are not country. It was Adam Chance who did the mouth harp. He’s the newest member since 2016 and is a bass/baritone. Try I Can’t Outrun You or Yours to hear more of Chance’s voice. You can’t go wrong with Home Free. Enjoy!

    • @venus5019
      @venus5019 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guypithecusthe1st453 I can appreciate your interest. I like Home Free, they did this as a homage/tribute. Take 6, Boyz 2 Men, Temptations, Oak Ridge Boys (along with others) were groups they patterned themselves off of.
      Whitney to Dolly, & others one can't state a preference is better, without the first realizing there never would have been the second without the first. Dolly wrote the song years (do mean years) ago before Whitney ever heard & recorded it. Whitney was a fabulous singer however without Dolly writing the song & performing it, Whitney would have never done it. Boyz 2 Men took a risk with in their arrangement & recorded it in their way. They hit a popularity with that song many might not realized outside of R&B just how much at that time. BTW, it's more of a gospel twinge than many in that day were doing, (one could hear the church upbringing).

    As with everyone, I have some favorites & add on even more when have opportunity to go through all their songs. Home Free has been around for some time. They got on the wider exposure doing 'The Sing Off'. I think the touring & being together for a few years, the maturity & complexity of the sound & harmonies shone through. There also is an influence of multiple genres that one can't help but hear (specifically you Rob!).
    They've gone through various members coming/going. They have an extensive catalog (yes catalog) of songs recorded & performed. If ever attempted to perform in one concert, would take them hours! They've done numerous covers of pop, R&B & country over many years. They've even written songs for the group & on their own. It boggles my mind how many songs, various arrangements they (individual members) & their producer have done. I don't know how they can remember the all words & do all their harmonies!
    At the moment with this 'demic', they are generating new videos every week or so. Surprisingly with the distancing holed up in their individually residences they have created some innovative gems. I like 'Sunday Best' (dogs, cat & daughter make it for me) & 'Folsom Prison Blues' (anyone notice the height chart keeps changing & Tim's hair has changed colors?
    I really love 'Thinking Out Loud/Let's Get It On'. Not only do I love the mashup, but also how the staging is done. I feel as if it's a stage production not a video. It's sweet, cute & they incorporate Home Free in such a way they become part of the scene. 'May Day' is done in such a way it's brainwashing.

    Welcome to Home Free. Yes, they do a lot of country but also everything else. I would recommend Helplessly Hoping, Seven Bridges Road, How Great Thou Art, Auld Lang Syne for harmonies. I also love I Can’t Outrun You with Chance as the lead. Tim Foust the deep bass has a 5 octave range so Mayday shows a different side of him. They show a lot of humor and are doing a great job during the pandemic releasing a new song/cover every 2 weeks. They film individually which is amazing actually. They just released Folsom Prison Blues with a new take on the Johnny Cash song. Please keep reacting and enjoying!

    Please, please wait on Mayday, awesome song but appreciate the group more. It is worth the wait and there are lots of choices to be had meanwhile. Welcome to the world of Home Free and their fans, known "Home Fries". We love good reactions of our boys!

    Thank you Lukas for your reaction. Some non-country to recommend are “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, “How Great Thou Art”, “Helplessly Hoping”, “Do You Hear What I Hear”, “Castle On the Hill” and “Thinking Out Loud/Let’s Get It On” to name but a few. New subscriber here and looking forward to more great reactions from you. Thank you.

    The video was shot on the eastern shore swamps of Mobile Bay, Alabama. This is where Adam Chance (baritone) is from. Tim (bass) is from southeast Texas (hungry Gators lurk there also). Austin Brown (lead tenor) is from south Georgia. The other two Rob (harmony tenor) and Adam Ruff (beat box ) are from Minnesota where the original group formed.

    You're going to love this group of men Adam Chance is the one that's making the didgeridoo sound Adam Rupp is the one doing the drums . Each one of these men can make different sounds with their voices that's what so amazing about them.

    First soloist is Austin Brown. Second soloist is Rob Lundquist. The bass is Tim Foust. The beatboxer is Adam Rupp. The fifth in this grouping is Adam Chance, called Chance because Adam Rupp was there first. He is the one doing the Jaw Harp. The fellow with the hat from Ring of Fire (Chris Rupp) is no longer with the group at this point having left to pursue solo and other work. The Rupps are brothers and founders of the group back in 2000.

    I would suggest their cover of End of the Road where Rob, the bearded guy shines as your next song. They all take turns leading, except for Adam the beatboxer, depending who's mostly suited for the particular song. I've seen Mayday being suggested but we, the Home Fries, usually recommends new reactors to wait with it until they know the guys more so not to miss some great reaction moments. :) If you want a more up-beat song I suggest Can't Stop the Feeling or Try Everything as your next song. Looking forward to whichever song you end up choosing. Thanks for a great reaction!

    Try “End of the Road” (Boyz 2 Men), “We Just Disagree” (Dave Mason), “Thinking Out Loud/Let’s Get It On” (Ed Sheehan/Marvin Gaye) to name a few of their non-country songs. If you want to hear some amazing harmony try “How Great Thou Art,” “Helplessly Hoping” (Crosby, Stills, and Nash), “Auld Lang Syne” again, to name a few. You really can’t go wrong with any of their songs. Great reaction!

    Another face of this group would be 'May Day' by Cam, Boys to Men's 'End of the Road' and 'In the Blood' by John Mayer. When they do a cover, no matter which genre they choose, they honor the song's roots while making the song their own.

    Yes, Adam is the beat boxer but it's actually Chance who does the jaw harp. I've seen them do this in concert and Chance does the jaw harp. And yes, Adam sounds like a real harmonica even live. Dude is a beast at imitating instruments.

    Home Free is typically Country based, but as many have mentioned, they've made several non-country covers and originals as well. I would wait on listening to Mayday for a while, until you've gotten to know them a bit better. I know many recommend it, but that particular song is even better when you know the different personas first.
    I would love for you to react to react to "Can't Stop This Feeling". It's a wee bit countryfied, but not too much. Also "End Of The Road" can be recommended.

    For not so country I'd do Helplessly Hoping or All About That Bass or End of the Road. I love these guys and think that all of them are very fluid with their vocal range which makes them so awesome. They also all do some beatboxing or other tricks like whistling. They cover all genres really. There is even a clip of Austin singing a song from Les Mis. I'm glad you enjoy them!
