  • After experiencing Pentatonix for the first time a few days ago with their version of Hallelujah -- which BLEW me away -- I've noted the various recommendations from subscribers, and decided to check out Sound of Silence. Needless to say, to those of you who know this a cappella group, they didn't disappoint.

      Yeah, it's true...and I'm a pretty big Avi booster...if I had one nitpick, I feel like Matt has a more traditional operatic projection at full voice full blend. But that can evolve.

      I thought Avi was a much better fit in the group. His bass voice sounded much more natural. With Matt I often have the feeling that his voice is electronically pitched down.

    Your description of the harmony structure was spot on. It's hard to put into words just how incredible their arrangements and execution are, but you managed to capture it well. You are right that there has to be a delicate balance of singing and listening to produce the balance and fullness that Pentatonix consistently accomplishes. There is nothing wasted and nothing gratuitous in their arrangements. Every note, pause, crescendo, breath, beat, and moment has a purpose. I am dumbfounded by the amount of talent each individual member has and how as a group they transcend all expectations and assumptions of what an acapella group can be.

    Every one of these singers were classically trained. And because the "trio" have known each other since childhood, they are totally in "harmony." Yes, they definitely LISTEN to each other. In their documentary, they went crazy when they got really good quality earpieces, because listening to each other is so key. Loved your reaction!

    • @susanb4213
      @susanb4213 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Avi was trained in OPERA. But the trio studied music with private instructors for years before entering college, and they received a solid classical foundation. Of course they also studied musical theater and were involved in pop music groups during high school. But they all made all state choir, which requires a strong foundation in classical choral and solo singing. They weren't just self trained amateurs when they auditioned for the Sing Off, and they have often given a lot of credit to their voice teachers who gave them a strong start and good techniques which have contributed to their success and longevity. Kevin was a classically trained musician, not singer, but much of what a musician learns is applicable to voice as well.

    One of the reasons I love finding a new PTX Reactor is because new people bring new perspectives. You've nailed in your commentaries both of them some of the things that makes this group so extraordinary. Five people with talent through the roof often cannot work together so much does each want to get their air time or they stumble over each other creatively. The chemistry of the group is why it works. The three primary leads, Scott, Mitch and Kirsty have known each other since childhood and sung together for many years before the group was formed. And they like each other, all five (six) of them, they really love each other and it shows in how they sing together.... Thank you for your input. Journey on, there is so much to hear! I am a particular fan of the different so I recommend Perfect, an Ariana Grande cover they did in their early days...

    Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is on of my favourite videos of theirs. It also showcases their harmonies without lyrics.

    If you watch their cover of “Problem,” you’ll hear more of Scott’s high end of his range, as well as Kevin doing some really fun beatboxing tricks and Mitch rapping. The video itself is nearly unique with them on an all-white set that really makes them pop.
    For some non-Pentatonix reaction suggestions, check out Disturbed’s cover of this song-very powerful, and one that Paul Simon has stated he really liked. You can tell that PTX had heard it and drew on some inspiration from its intensity for their arrangement. Disturbed is a hard rock band (I think-could be more heavy metal or thrash), but their lead singer has a gorgeously deep resonant voice.
    Another suggestion is Haley Reinhardt with Postmodern Jukebox doing Creep or Seven Nation Army-both are fantastic. She has an amazing presence and her singing talent is very impressive. Postmodern Jukebox itself has a wide range of singers that they use, and specialize in taking modern songs and switching up the genre, I.e., Thriller as a 1930s Cab Calloway style number, complete with backup dancers.
    If you want more acapella that has gorgeous harmonies and can also be loads of fun, Home Free is terrific. They won The Sing-Off the season after Pentatonix, but are very different because they specialize in the country genre, although they do folk, classic rock, gospel, and other types of music, too. They can be pretty goofy in their videos and are clearly enjoying themselves.

    Welcome to Pentatonix!!!! Love your reactions so far & cannot WAIT to see more!! I was a HARDCORE Pentatonix fan since day 1 on The Sing Off, but I've since been converted....I am now a PentaFry lol!!! That's a Pentatonix fan (Pentaholic) & a Home Free fan (Home Fries) hence.....Pentafry! They are an equally talented acapella group (won the same show as Pentatonix did in the following season.) Different stylistically but just as amazing. A lot of fans are either or but you seem to truly just enjoy the artistry so I feel you would definitely enjoy them as well. Another group is Voiceplay. All of them are amazing all around & have amazing basses & percussionist as well as ALL being stunning vocalists. Enjoy the new discoveries!

    They are true craftsmen (and woman) at their art. And though you haven't seen a live performance yet, others, along with myself, that have seen them in concert, will tell you that they sound just as amazing, if not more, live! Your 1st 2 reactions, IMO, are their most powerful songs, vocally. A close third, which most people don't mention, is Can You Feel the Love Tonight. All members get a chance to shine, especially Kirstie, but what I love is that they sound exactly like angels (or at least what angels would sound like in my mind, lol). Keep up with the PTX reactions and you'll see your subs rise very quickly :)

Another one would be "Mary Did You Know" If you ever want to branch out you might also try another acapella group called Home Free, I would suggest "How Great Thou Art", "Auld Lang Syne", "Helplessly Hoping" "Do You Hear What I Hear", "Love Train" or "In The Blood" I will concur with the headphones request. Thank you for your great reactions, Mr. Hassel.
