Austin Brown, long hair with the beard, High Tenor. Rob Lundquist, The amazing beard, Lead Tenor. Adam Chance, called Chance because there was already an Adam when he joined the band, Bass/Baritone, first soloist in this, 4 octave range. Tim Foust, white streak in hair, Basso Profundo to Tenor, 5 octave range. Adam Rupp, the freak of nature, beatboxer, pleasant Tenor when he does sing mostly harmonies. That is just the basics so you can start identifying them.

I don’t know enough to know if it is true, but saw somewhere that Tim had a 10 octive range. Could be exaggeration.
@@michaelmclane8501 I believe it is 5 something like A0 to A5... I'm not as certain about the high end of that.
@@michaelmclane8501: 10 octaves are not possible. Dimash has a range of 6 octaves and 5 semitones and that is incredible.
@@michaelmclane8501 10 octaves would be larger than a grand piano. I have heard various recordings which total 5 + a little bit. Still downright phenomenal. Most average singers can manage about 2. Professionals use 3 proficiently depending on the genre with some extensions. One of the problems is that the voice is not as stable at the extremes for most humans. Tim is in some ways other worldly.
@CB isme His range is remarkable. The Profundo only applies to the bottom end. There is a video out there showing side by side examples including some classical music Bassos. Tim is right there with the best of them.

Austin is singing the high tenor, but Adam is creating the harmonica sound with his voice. He does a full harmonica solo in their rendition of Man of Constant Sorrow. You really need to check that one out, if you haven’t already.
Part of their appeal is the sense of fun they bring to everything.
I like Tim's sly little smile when he nails that awesome low note.
The harmonica is done by at least 3 of the group. 1) The tenor, Austin does his wale, 2) Adam Rupp, the beat boxer does a “wavy” harmonica, and 3) Tim, the base, blows a trumpet harmonica with his lips, after his deep dive. So, Yes, they all share and learn from their beat boxer, and add texture to the song at different times. So you can learn, too
When Tim hit that low note, I loved the way he held it while a smile spread across his face as if to say, “Yeah, I just did that.” He knows perfectly well that his low notes are a big reason some people like Home Free.
The typical smile of a man who knows exactly what he can do.
Aside from their incredible vocal talent (that's a given), there are three main reasons Home Free turned me into a groupie. One is that because they sing a capella & are not overly produced, they sound great live. It's obviously not QUITE as good as their albums & videos due to acoustics, the fact that they can layer their voices on tracks to sing multiple parts at the same time in the studio, etc. But they sound pretty darn close in concert! Second is that they are a true touring group (except when a pandemic ruins everything). They're typically on the road about 2/3 of the year. And third is that they are genuinely great guys. I've met them all several times, & they're so down-to-earth. Super nice, & they love their fans ALMOST as much as we love them! A few fun facts... Tim (bass) hails from my home state of Texas & has a 5 octave range! His upper register is actually really nice, & he works hard to keep it. Austin (high tenor) is a Georgia boy who previously worked as a cruise ship performer & also worked at Walt Disney World singing with Epcot's a capella group, Voices of Liberty. He is a born entertainer & absolutely lights up on stage!! Adam (beatboxer) also plays the trumpet. And as for his insane vocal percussion skills... He's self-taught & didn't start doing it until college! Rob (tenor) & Chance (baritone & sometimes bass) also played instruments (saxophone, I think) in high school. Home Free's producer is Darren Rust, who sings with a capella group The Blenders. :)
I love Tim's low note because of the killer smile he puts on right at the end.
He knows that note is hitting that really primal part of our brains and the effect it is having.

I like the fact that she doesnt over react to everything. Some of these folks who do the reaction videos go overboard with every other note and it take 30 min to get thru a song, then another 1.5 hrs to hear how much their dogs love the music. This is so well balanced and you still get those great reactions and knowledge all rolled into one. If I were to take lessons, I think I woukd have to choose her. (But too old to start now). Great Job Ma'am and for the rest of y'all, great comments as well!!

Yep, my video theory, is Tim definitely is the murder, Chance, Rob and Austin who are to relaxed are giving witness statements and were free the next day 😂. Adam Rupp was scared to death of Tim. In order to save himself, so psycho 😱Tim would not be his cell mate, he went crazy to stay alive! 👍

Adam Rupp is doing the harmonica while Austin Brown is doing a sad wail of the train whistle combined with a bluesy harmonica. In fact, the whole background is designed to sound like a train mournfully chugging down the track. Even near the end of the video Rupp is moving across the screen like a train. Pure genius to bring the train motif so far into their rendition.
There are few men that can sing so sub harmonics ! I am a man and i'm impressed by Tim on each every song . They are simply incredible . Adam is an alien , his harmonica sound is astounding .
If your looking for Tim's range, try Do You Hear What I Hear. He starts in an upper registry, then half way through he drops the floor into the basement. You'll be pleasantly surprised. Give it a listen.
I believe, the most beautiful arrangement of this Christmas Hymn that I have heard, done by Adam Rupp the beatboxer.

Great song and arrangement by them but as far as showing Tim's range I think the live version of YOUR MAN tops it.
They have produced a bunch of quarantine videos starting with "Quarantine" to the tune of "Honesty" by Billy Joel.
The quarantine video that's growing on me is "Sunday Best". It feels very different from their usual country offerings. I'd love to hear Christi deconstruct it.

Austin, the high tenor, has been releasing some solo songs on his personal TH-cam the last few weeks
Austin also does a lot of the arranging for the band. Tim and his wife just did a song with Peter Hollen and his wife. It is pretty cool.

These 'quarantine editions', as they like to call them, are out of this world. They aren't even in the same states right now, and yet they're able to pull these videos together seamlessly. It's just amazing! They are recording their own parts in their own homes, by themselves separately, and then submitting them to their video producer (Jimmy Bates) and music producer (Darren Rust) to tie it all together (also residing in different states)! Can you imagine how difficult that would be? Awesome! Their behind the scenes are hilarious because they show some of the struggles of trying to record themselves! - I just love the "jazzy-bluesy, train-rolling-along-the-tracks" themed harmony & beat throughout this song. Then Adam's "far-off" harmonica whistle just caps it off!! Love this arrangement by their music producer, Darren Rust! (Btw: they basically 'all' work their arrangements together no matter who brings in the original concept. And, Adam (bbxr) is doing the harmonica, however, Tim and Austin can also do it quite well). (Side note: Producer, Darren Rust, also has a group he has sung with for 25+/- years, The Blenders, who are also phenomenal).
Home Free consists of five vocal entertainers:
. Austin Brown (high tenor)
. Adam "Chance" (baritone|bass); (4 octave range)
. Tim Foust (primary bass|baritone|tenor); (5 octave range)
. Rob Lundquist (tenor)
. Adam Rupp (vocal percussion|beatboxer|tenor)
They *all* cover multi octaves & provide multi instrument-like vocal sounds (guitar, harmonica, etc) as well as provide some beatboxing as needed. There is no 'lead' in the group, per se. They kind of audition themselves to choose leads based on who sings the specific song best.

Adam and crew do so much more than just singing! To really be impressed with the other sounds that Adam can produce try their cover of man of constant sorrows, Chance does some of the vocal sounds in that video as well
Tims subharmonic bass gets me every time. Geoff from Voiceplay is another one, but Tim has a smoothness all the way down the register. To have that kind of Volume and clarity on a vocal growl is a true gift. Being a bass myself, im just in awe.

I love Home Free! Adam really is a wonder when it comes to what he can do. He actually learned from VHS & dvds which he shows on his episode of their series Home Away From Home (ep 6). But he had been a trumpet major in college so he was already musically knowledgeable when his brother Chris asked him to start Home Free with him & some friends for a talent show in 2000. Currently he has a Starsona page in which one of the things he offers is a beatboxing lesson. In terms of social distancing, Home Free has been putting out new music videos every other friday (with new episodes of Home Away from Home in between) since lockdown began in march when they returned home from their shortened tour in Europe. Only the first video 'Go Rest High on that Mountain' wasn't because it had been previously filmed but everything since their 'Quarantine' video released in April, has been filmed in/around their homes in 3 different states. Hope you continue to enjoy the rabbit hole that is Home Free! I suggest Woman Amen/Female, Fishin in the Dark/Boondocks, Friends in Low Places & Summer in the Country!

Home Free is putting out something new about every two weeks, and there is so much good material on their TH-cam channel. This was definitely a different version from the original, but that's what they do, and they do it so well.

Thank you for another great reaction, that was really interesting. One thing that you may notice is that one member of the group has changed since 2015, when they did Ring of Fire. The singer who shared the lead with Tim is Adam Chance, often called Chance so as not to confuse him with Adam Rupp. He replaced Chris Rupp (Adam's brother) in 2016, but while technically he's the baritone of the group, he used to sing bass with his previous group (Street Corner Symphony) and will comfortably take the bass line when Tim's singing lead. I think Adam Rupp was doing the harmonica, on another track, but Austin, who you recognised as the tenor from Ring of Fire, can do it as well - there are concert versions of Man of Constant Sorrow online where you can see both of them doing a duet with them.
More detail, Home Free was originally founded in by Chris and Adam Rupp in 2000 in Minnesota as a hobby, they needed a beat-boxer and Adam chose to learn. His degree is actually in trumpet, and he's basically self-taught from DVDs and working with other beat-boxers. He sometimes sings tenor harmony but doesn't feel confident in singing lead, unlike all the other members of the group who will take turns depending on the needs of the song. Austin Brown, the high tenor, majored in musical theatre, and performed in the Voices of Liberty and on cruise ships before he joined the group. Rob Lundquist, the other tenor, also studied vocal performance and has sung with the group since 2008. As I said before, Adam Chance is technically the baritone but is also a very capable bass singer, he studied saxophone and journalism in college, before joining Street Corner Symphony and performing with them for a number of years. Tim Foust sang in choirs in high school, and comes from a Southern Gospel background, where bass singing is emphasized - he dropped out of college to join his first professional acapella group, Blue Jupiter, and sang with a number of the different groups before joining Home Free full time in 2012.

Chris Rupp and his younger brother Adam started the group in 2000 and they took the name Home Free from one of their member's grandfather's boat. There is no one member who arranges their songs. Chris has recently been releasing some videos with insight to how some of their songs were developed. Take a look at his reviews of "Elvira" and "All About That Bass". ... Guy

Tim Foust did a piano version of I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You that you can find on TH-cam that will amaze you at his range, control and flexibility. Adam Rupp does a 5 minute solo at one of the concerts you can find on TH-cam, they performed with Kenny Rogers and the Oak Ridge Boys, and if you want to hear the most heavenly harmonies check out both of their covers of Helplessly Hoping and Auld Lang Syne

Tim goes to a G#1 in misty mountains and he goes to an E1 here
The note here is actually lower by 4 half steps, but it sounds different because he uses a different technique to get down to it than he used to hit the G# in Misty Mountains.
What really impresses me about Tim's low notes isn't that he can hit them (well, that's impressive too, of course), but that he can A) sustain them for so long and B) he has maneuverability down that low.
@@chrisd7047 I totally agree. The thing about Tim's bass is how agile his voice is down that low. If you've seen him do the gaff they put into that Josh Turner song during a live performance where he does a run from a sub harmonic growl back up to the key the song is sung in it's pretty incredible. Speakers blow, camera's on tripods shake, & ceiling tiles have been known to fall.
I think this arrangement is brilliant and I love it. I'm also old enough to remember when Johnny Cash released the Folsom Prison Blues live at Folsom Prison Concert. I grew up listening to him as my Mom and one sister were huge Johnny Cash fans. My sister in the late '60s early '70s saw him live in concert several times. They did a collaboration with the Oak Ridge Boys singing "Elvira." Probably my favorite collaboration by them, with two full five part harmony bands singing.
Both Adam Rupp-the beatboxer and Austin Brown-the high tenor make the harmonica sound. As to the arrangements it's mostly done by Darren Rust these days but I think all of the guys have done it on some songs. I know Tim Foust the bass has done a few including Helplessly Hoping although the concept and directing on that video was done by Adam Chance (called Chance to reduce confusing him with Adam R) Adam Rupp did an amazing job arranging Do you hear what I hear. I recommend you react to both these songs. That's the thing about the guys, they are multi-talented and can wear different hats when needed.
I heard Adam Rupp started learning the Trumpet in his early days, and he was given lip strengthening exercises to help with the trumpet work. One thing leads to another, and now he's a world famous beat boxer.
I really like Austin Brown’s part. His voice at times makes me think of a train whistle, which is such a great tie in for this genre.

Christi, it's great that you notice Adam Rupp, most people don't pay attention to the beatboxer.
Mighty fine reaction you have done here. Sure would like to see your reaction to Home Free's "Man of Constant Sorrow". It was their version that got me hooked onto this here group. Some back ground information....the video was shot in the rain, near the swamps of Mobile Bay, Alabama, where Adam Chance (the baritone) is from. Lots of hungry "Gators" lurk in that area.
That was the first song I heard from them, too--and was instantly hooked. I've never been a "fan girl", but I make an exception in their case!
Now that you are beginning to know the members “Mayday” and “End of the Road” are good ones to showcase their talents.
For all 5 singing, how great thou art. For the best of Adam? Look for one of his ‘drum solo’ sessions from their tours, man is a machine.

I really enjoyed your reaction and comments. Home Free never disappoints and always leaves you smiling in amazement. Their arrangements, harmonies and dynamics can be simple (I Can’t Outrun You, How Great Thou Art) or very complex (Can’t Stop the Feeling or Butts Remix) but they are always beautiful and suited to the genre and lyrics.

Oh, I could see how much you enjoyed this video! It showed on your face! I know that feeling very well! Home Free music brings me to a happy place (sometimes sad with certain songs). Imagine being in a theater in the first few rows when Tim hits those low, low notes! You definitely feel it through your whole body! One other little part that I loved in the video is when Rob (glasses & beard guy) did his ad lib! It felt like he was bringing us to church with those vocals! I would love for you to react to either Crosby, Stills, & Nash’s cover of “Helplessly Hoping” or Vince Gill’s cover of “Go Rest High” (Country Rebel Church sessions version). I really loved your reaction!! I’ll be watching for more!
What you said about hearing a song you've heard for years sounding fresh and new because last night I learned that in addition to their own version of God Bless the USA, Home Free did a version last Fourth of July with Lee Greenwood and the United States Air Force Band that just blew me away. I listened to it over and over until I had to force myself to shut down my laptop and sleep. You should definitely check it out, whether in a video reaction or just for yourself.
I wanna say the harmonica style singing is called the jaw harp and at least two of the guys do it because they use it in man of constant sorrows as well

You should react to their amazing arrangement of John Denver's Take Me Home Country Roads. They do kind of a bluesy version near the end of it. Imo, these guys have the richest harmonies of any band on the planet.
At the time I watched the original video (15 mins ago) over 200 oxygen deprived brains disliked this video, and me I'm putting it up there with the top three I've heard from them. Brilliant.
Three Four (34) years to go. Now it makes sense. I thought they were saying three more years to go and I thought, 'You killed a guy and you got three years?' lol This arrangement is killer, so to speak. I just can't ding them too hard for making a serious song so fun. Tim is just unreal with his range. I also believe that the chest fry on the low note here was a stylistic choice for the song, as he is perfectly capable of nailing that note without it.

It sounded like Adam Rupp actually recreated the sound of cocking the gun in Tim’s first solo about Mama’s warning about playing with guns. He never fails to amaze me!
Funny that you mention hearing a harmonica. Adam Rupp does that sound and actually a solo of one in their cover of Man of Constant Sorrow. And I'm not sure who does it, but in their cover of Cover Me Up, you can hear a steel guitar sound. These guys are amazing.

I am one of the "Home Fries" and all there covers for over 20 years are fun and amazing! I am 70 years old so I think I lived during the best times for legendary bands and performers! There were just too many great songs ever from Woodstock, Motown, Jagger, Beach Boys, Bee Gees, and Elvis! Too many to list! I would like you to react to the 3 sister group called "OG3NE" from the Netherland as their harmonies are flawless. They also made the term "echoing" famous in their songs. Maybe you could tell us exactly what that is! Love your reactions and hope to hear more "Golden Oldies" too!

The first song I heard them do was “Man of constant sorrows”. I was hooked. J D Sumner used to be my favorite bass but I think Tim has taken that slot now. Still love J D but Tim has wider range I think.
Which is funny cause I think J.D had a lower speaking voice than Tim, but Tim just blows him away otherwise

There are so many easter eggs to find here ... I'm not going to spoil them, but I've found at least six so far. I can really visualize the conversation that went along with making some of those happen. A behind the scenes for this one would be epic. It shows their sense of humor never quite goes away even when singing a rather serious song. They're having fun despite what's going on in the world and we should all join them.
As I’m sure you’ve been told by now Austin Brown is the high tenor. He has an amazing voice with soul, clarity, great tone, etc. For an example of what he can do try “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables done live during a Home Free concert.
You're not the first one to say that about Austin's voice. Don't we all wish we were cursed with a singing voice like that. LMAO!
Austin Brown is the one with the "Harmonica" sound, but he's actually just singing "oh yeah." It just sounds like a harmonica. It's the timing of the sound in the song, and his singing nearly his highest (chest voice) note. It's just high enough it sounds like a harmonica in a similar effect much like when women hit their "whistle notes" just not as pronounced.
