  • Part 2 of Resto-modding a trashed Street Legal 1970's Yamaha RD350 two stroke and bring it back to its former glory. Many people simply thought I was wasting my time, but I like proving people wrong. There is something very special about the words "2 stroke and street legal" In the same sentence. Once you crack the throttle all your struggles fade away..

    I'm glad to see another young person modifying and going against the grain with the RD. I'm really curious to see the next episode and see how you put together the rear disc as I'm looking to do the same on my RD. Don't let the old RD guys get to your head, the RD community can be pretty toxic.

    When I graduated high school in ‘72 I bought a 1972 Rd 350 R5. It was my only form of transportation for 2 years. I rode the heck out of it. I rebuilt it and put on 30 mm mikunis and expansion chambers. It gained quite a reputation. Now I wish I still owned it.

    You have to have the crank pressed apart by a proper two-stroke crank building shop, the center seals MUST be replaced and the crank pressed back together & Trued straight & balanced.
    FALICON crankshafts in Clearwater FL is who I used for years - you can not assemble this motor with 40+ yrs old seals between Cyl 1 and cyl 2, it will leak and "Trade" intake charge between cylinders and one will end up running lean and one will run rich and you'll burn up the motor (this is true with ALL multi-cylinder two stroke engines, it's just something you have to do ONE TIME, and You'll never need to do this again.......)
    ALSO-
    Vasily: Mocking up Rear Brake using the shifter pedal.....

  • @TurboDog73TX
    @TurboDog73TX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing I would add, those old Yammi's are notorious for headshake at higher speeds, part of this is due to the ball bearings used in the head stem, they make tapered roller bearing uprades that help out a bit, another reason is sure to the pretty flexible frames of these bikes, You were wise to do the gusseting I saw in the vid, finally a steering damper would help as well.
    Can't wait to see the finished bike getting ripped on!

    CONGRATULATIONS !!! That's AMAZING !
    Chapeau l'artiste, c'est un incroyable travail de reconstruction que personnellement je ne ferais jamais.
    Je partirais plutôt d'un exemplaire en meilleur état, en état de rouler, qui je pense me coûterait moins cher en dépenses, surtout que là non seulement il faut avoir de bonnes connaissances en mécanique mais aussi être vraiment outillés en matériels lourds dans un local assez grand, certainement plus qu'un simple box de garage de voiture.
    Beaucoup de si ... donc ce n'est pas à la portée de tout un chacun.
    Voyons la suite de la reconstruction ... épisode 2 et 3.

    Nice call using the Heim-Joints as swing arm bushings, much easier to fine tune and make adjustments. The mono-shock is also the way to go, built a Honda CB-500 using a mono and swing arm off a Shadow to get a much wider rear wheel on the bike. Sweet Man good to see ya moving forward with a new build now. A Yamaha RD 2 stroke are sick engines when built right and being a inline twin pretty smooth and reliable! Keep it running fat and oiled mixed by hand on premium gas and you'll be very happy with the engine! 😉

    In the UK, during the 1970's & 1980's, 80% of café racers were 2 strokes. I still ride a CZ 350 2 stroke café racer that I built in 1987. It has just over 79,000 miles on the clock now. It had 29,000 miles when I built it.
    The engine has SKF low friction rating race grade bearings, cylinders are ported & gas flowed and Italian made Asso Werke forged pistons installed. Abbey Performance expansion pipes. Top speed was 107 MPH running on 99 RON leaded petrol. Modern E5 unleaded petrol has around 10% less energy content, so not the same level of performance nowadays. Ethanol is also bad for 2 strokes (causes big overheating & poor combustion issues!!).
