    Brother, please.... Take my advice. I have been a machinist for almost 30 years and PLEASE please wear safety glasses. It only takes one time to get a chip stuck in your eye and it would be a hot one at that without using coolant. Machinery of all types are no joke but especially a lathe! Please be safe and keep both of those peepers in working order.

      @@THESLlCK big agree, I love offroad and road riding so they are the best for me. My 1980 xt250 is pretty much stick visually but did allot of engine work and reversible cosmetic changes to have it look sleaker. And for God's sake people need to put real fenders on their scramblers, unless you're a poser who pretends that you ride on dirt

    • @THESLlCK
      @THESLlCK 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seafire820 honestly fenders are kinda mid. So long as you have some kinda basic fairings I think it's a-ok. I'm not mudding with mine and I'd never run through big enough gravel to damage me or the bike. Pebbles are where the buck stops for me.

    • @seafire820
      @seafire820 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@THESLlCK I agree for cafe racers, but if you have a scrambler and you're not doing actual trail riding like you say then you're using it wrong. That's why I made that comment, the majority of scrambler I see don't have fenders and are just posers who don't actually offroad

      With little restoration work that bike would been worth around 3K€. You cant get 125cc version under 1K€ here. So kinda sad see it modified so heavily that you cannot restore it anymore if and when this caferacer trend dies off, but then again glad its not going to smelter.

  • @davenawahine4428
    @davenawahine4428 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Depending on what you mean by stiffing up the shock, we'd need to know what the total travel is?
    What the rider sag is?
    And what the free sag is?
    If the numbers show the spring rate is correct but it blows throw the travel to easily or the rebound is too fast then you have options.
    1. Have a suspension shop revalve it for you.
    2. DIY stiffen the shim stacks yourself....pretty easy to do.
    3. Use a heavier weight oil.
    Taking the shock apart is fairly simple, same with bleeding and reassembly.
    Lots of shock TH-cam vids out there, filling the shock with nitrogen can be done at a local shop.
    If your spring is too soft then that's the first thing you need to change.

    love the aesthetic you've got going on!! But.... you NEED to brace those swing-arm tubes, front to back and the shock mount locations. When the shocks were piggy-back the mechanical advantage acting on the tube is much less than in the case of a mono shock (Probably Stated Already). I promise you, from experience, you don't want a swing-arm tube to fail at speed..

    That's a nice front brake conversion, a major weakness fixed. Re. the wheels; most people aren't aware that those early cast wheels are heavier than spoked ones (they were actually cheaper to make which was a win-win for manufacturers, kind of "making a virtue of a necessity" in terms of marketing), and on a light bike like the RD it messes up the sprung-to-unsprung mass ratio. Personally, whatever the cost and hassle, I'd always go with spoked wheels, probably even retro-fit them on the RD400 (having to use a rear drum brake instead of the crappy disc is no loss).

    That's an R5 engine and tank. Piston port engine. RD's have reed valves. Otherwise similar bike but R5 came with front drum brake and no locking gas cap. The engine and gas tank are from a '70-'72. You *can* put an RD 350 reed topend on an R5 but that one is piston port. Fun bike.

  • @calholli
    @calholli 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    RD 350 is just a Yamaha Banshee engine.. (in case you didnt' know.).. They are the same engine; it started out on the bike and then was developed into water cooled cylinders and put onto the Yamaha banshee quad. Which was built for like 25 years or something crazy, without many changes at all, if any. So there should be endless parts on ebay for these things. I'm pretty sure you can upgrade these with the aftermarket upgraded cylinders which can go as big as 700cc.. and some even have a built in power valve. But all that stuff costs thousands. lol.

    Best safety squints are clear plastic. Your eyes are no joke. Bike looking great. Can't wait to hear it run. Nice set of spannies coming up? That looks like a set of YR5 barrels rather than RD350 as the RD had reed valves and these appear to be piston ported. If you do go reed then a good tip is to fit the YPVS reed block covers as they allow the connection tube to be fitted. Be sure to space back the filters as well. They prefer the longer tract and it gets rid of some of the torque holes. My 74 350B was barely ten years old when it was my first bike.....

  • @donellmuniz590

    Vas, with your mad skills and tools, I think you could build custom bikes full time, like Roland Sands. You could make cafe racers or bobbers out of older Japanese bikes, British bikes, Sportsters, whatever. I think it's important to use original headstocks, serial numbers, engine cases (not aftermarket) and titles, so they retain their value and legal identity.

    Hi Vasily,I used to ride with a lot of guys that rode the RD 350's. Me on the other hand I had an experimental Titan Suzuki 500 with the high low range gearbox, I have not ever seen another one like that bike in particular. I guess I should have kept it because she would probably be worth a fortune right now. I love the way the two strokes would sound when they were all together like a pack of bees coming down the highway. There is no other sound like that anywhere in the world. If ever you get a chance to do a build look for the Titan 500, they were actually a very dependable bike and had very good road racing results. I wanted to tell you thank you for sharing I enjoy watching your videos. Even if I am an old fart. Many blessings to you and your family.

    Your videos are interesting and very addictive, you have good engineering and mechanical skills, pretty good mig welder too,
    Your tig welding will get better the more you use it.
    Just a couple of things l would change if it were my bike, the silencers on the end of the chambers look a little too long, maybe shorten the chambers a couple of inches?
    Also the rear rotor doesn’t look right, it needs to be changed for a more modern vented rotor like the front.
    As a biker of the 70’s, Suzuki 250 gt, Kawasaki kh 400, one thing l remember very well they all vibrated big time, so it would be a good idea to ensure the engine is rubber mounted.

    The shock supports you welded onto the frame and swingarm look flimsy to me. I was lead to believe that the banshee was water cooled, not air cooled. The water cooled engines have the YPVS exhaust valve, the air cooled do not. Expansion pipes are a must on two strokes and can, to an extent be tuned for the type/style of riding you will be doing. Dependant on the engine tune, the exhausts can be made to give more torque or top end. You should be looking at about 60hp, maybe more. Stay safe!

    Took a KZ900, made a set of rear shifter and pegs, clip on handle bars, did a couple more things to her.
    That was in 1982...

    I knew you had a slight accent together with your name being Vasily suggests immigrant from eastern Europe, but when you said kilograms I knew for sure I wasn't imagining anything. Americans never use kilograms as a weight measurement. Assimilate!

    Cool project with this RD. Nice brake upgrade, from which Triumph came that Brembo calliper or what is the product code? Brake disc year specific yamaha fz600 model? The looks of the modern tyres looks great on that aircooled rd

    Do you ever sell your projects or fabricate things for people? You should get into making mini bike frames that'll take a 200cc engine

    I had an RD400.....one of the few bikes I wish I had kept! Ran the piss out of that thing. K&N filters and stinger pipes. Traded it in for a 76 Kawie 750 2 stroke triple. My fingers are still numb.

    "Safety Squints" I love it. But after I saw my friend get one of the wires from a wire wheel stuck in his eyeball I pretty much put something on my eyes whenever grinding or buffing or wire wheeling stuff now. Yikes, that was a little disturbing.

    Get a steel sprocket on hand. That aluminum sprocket won't last long at all. Maybe 1000 miles if that. I don't recommend them for street use.

    The mounting point on the swingarm is too short. It gives the rear wheel too much leverage for the suspension. Look at a tzr 250 3ma swingarm and try mimic that. It allows the shock to be moved higher up and thus and further back stiffening up the back. You have a great engine there. A little port work will go a long way on that engine. You wont regret it

    It's is a shame you couldn't restore the RD350 back to factory, because the value of them are crazy and just to have one would be cool as all hell.. but,all in all it's still bad ass..🤘

    Been following this build and have to say you obviously have good fabrication skills, apart from the disregard of safety specs,. But for me the real hard graft is the cleaning and refurbishing of the engine parts, forks, wheels etc. and it appears you have palmed that off onto others to do for you, and are throwing a bunch of new parts at it. It is what it is and I’m still interested to see how it turns out, but let’s see the the difficult stuff as well.

    I sure hope you installed the axle bearing spacer tube inside of the wheel hub because your bearings won't last long if you didn't... You also need to tension the headset bearings to where there is a certain amount of drag force when you turn the bars,otherwise you can and will wind up with handlebar flop at speeds or on ruts or twitch during turns.. Any of which can be painful or even deadly at higher speeds...

    Shock off of a heavier bike is your best bet, you can also measure your coil spring and look at websites of spring manufacturers for something the same size but heavier.
