  • Star vs. the Forces of Evil is an American animated magical girl television series created by Daron Nefcy and developed by Jordana Arkin and Dave Wasson, which aired on Disney Channel and Disney XD. The show follows Star Butterfly and her best friend Marco Diez as they take on the Forces of Evil. The show started amazing, but had a terrible decline, and today we'll talk about how.

    It would've been bolder if they had actually killed off Ludo back in the Season 1 Finale, thereby showing viewers that they meant business, what with the tonal shift and all. Said tonal shift waffled between poor man's Avatar and poor man's Regular Show due to its mismatched writing staff (how does one bring on an Avatar alum with a writer from Sanjay and Craig, for example?). As for Toffee, the crew likely killed off his character in advance because his actor was undergoing cancer treatment at the time, but then why didn't they just get a replacement in the meantime instead? Imagine if the Avatar crew killed off either Zuko or Azula before half of that show was even finished! Imagine if Avatar's final villain was that one-time bully from that Fire Nation school that Aang attended incognito! Lastly, if the crew really wanted to tackle fantasy racism with such parallels to America's past, then why didn't they hire any cartoon writers of color like Kevin Johnson? He was a former AV Club critic and actually wrote a piece on "Star vs the Forces of Weirdness" on his blog Total Media Bridge.

    • @SyCaustik
      @SyCaustik  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      All amazing points. There were many options they could have done to keep the large tonal shift created by toffee and make his impact feel more important but I feel like they still wanted to keep the huge comedy aspect of the show as the focus and the plot as 2nd, but I feel as if it was a weird decision to introduce such a important and serious plot in the first place if that was the case.

    Tbh…the show fell after Toffee’s defeat.
    Meteora’s story was interesting but the politics and racism dragged the show so bad. I loved Eclipsa too
    Season 3 (after Toffee’s defeat) was okay…not great like season 1 and 2 but it had some good moments
    Season 4 was a massive dumpster fire. I hated almost everything about season 4. The one and only thing I actually liked about season 4 was Globgor but even then the episode itself pissed me off because of what happened.
    The Starco was dragged far too long for not a very good pay off in the finale and Mina being too strong that magic had to be destroyed? Stupid!
    Magic isn’t the problem, Star! The magic abusers are!
    And Moon orchestrating the whole thing was the worst plot twist! THE WORST!!!

    I feel like the monster racism thing almost works if you completely ignore the real life parallels although at that point what's the point including such a plot line anyways? I also feel like it would have been more interesting if it went more along more with what lobster claws (one of the s1 episodes) set up where monsters are depicted as by Nature innately evil although this would definitely take monsters in a different direction I think it would be more interesting especially for monsters that want to be good although obviously they would have to very much distance monsters from any racial parallels if they went with this approach

    • @SyCaustik
      @SyCaustik  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      True. Like the zootopia thing instead of the just blatant real life parallel. I'm guessing they forgot about that plotline later in the story.

    I loved the show at first, but the last two seasons gradually turned into a cautionary tale about what could happen if we gave the reigns of society to some stupid kid with an activist mindset. Star's heart was in the right place, but things just kept going from bad to worse as she tried to right the wrongs of the past without having any real understanding of how the world works, or giving any real consideration to what anyone else wants. Given the state of their worlds by the end of the finale, I'd say Star turned out to be a bigger, more dangerous villain than all of the other big-bads of the show combined!

      I don’t really think Star’s activist mindset was the issue. Mostly, there were other issues regarding the story’s writing and character that did it. A lot of what caused the show’s downfall were present in the show before she decided to become an activist.
      One of the issues was the lack of consequence or change for Star’s character. She never experiences negative consequences for what she does, or learns anything. The world either loves her for everything, dislikes her since they’re a bad person, or the rest of the cast turn actively worse to make her look better. As a result, even if she wanted to change things for the better, the show was never going to look at her actions (either selfish or activist) as anything but good. It’s not like she was an activist from the beginning, but she was a person who never had to change ever. And as a result her actions to improve society were just bad.

    If Star had been enrolled in a school in Mexico, no doubt all the boys would fall in love with her, but in the end Star would scare them with her magic and summoning monsters. In Mexico it is not common to have blonde and blue-eyed women.

    Actually, racism is a theme throughout the entire show. It’s a slow build-up which is mentioned as PART of Star’s motivation for becoming a better princess. We’re introduced to to the story of how Mewmans chased monsters away from what was originally their home, and how the history of Mewmi is centered around violence. We’re introduced to Star’s hesitancy as early as season 1, where she hosts a live action role play of the battle that lead to mewmans taking over. (Mewmipendence day) We’re also shown how Star is clearly racist against all monsters at the beginning but of the story, expecially in (Lobster Claws.) where Star actually tries to convince Marco that monsters cannot be good. A huge part of her growth as a character is realizing that it’s only okay to be a monster if you’re royalty, and otherwise you’re persecuted. So no, racism was present throughout the entire series. I also don’t agree, despite the fact that Star not being royalty is complete bullshit, considering her father is still royal, that finding out Star isn’t Mewman royalty wasn’t foreshadowed. I mean Eclipsa looks nothing like Festivia, and Meteoria was introduced early on with having strange marks on her cheeks as early as season one as well. Finally, the fact that Star isn’t a true butterfly does effect the plot. That’s the entire reason she bestows Eclipsa with the wand and kingdom again, because she wants to return what her family stole from Eclipsa. The fall happens when you realize that Eclipsa doesn’t really care about the kingdom at all, and her only motivations center around freeing her husband. Which, again. What’s wrong with being in love with a Monster you ask? The entire show is racist. You really missed the mark on a lot of important points and some of the things you said didn’t make any sense.

    • @SyCaustik
      @SyCaustik  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah. I see. I actually did notice those points early on in the show they have little teases to them and showcase the mewman and monster conflict early. My issue is how its placed into the story and how its used/when. They have it explode and become a major issue out of nowhere rather than a consistent build up that felt satisfying. And until that part came up it was a pass and go type of situation. Your point about the royalty I don't know what your talking about there tbh. This videos a year old and I don't remember what I said other than how It came out of nowhere. And her being a butterfly doesn't effect the plot to the point where a new status quo was set or much changed. It was introduced FAR too late into the show for it to have a big effect and seemed to be mostly thrown in to create artificial conflict that in reality didn't really matter as a whole. The problem with the show isn't that it features these things its how its written and how its used. As I said I believe the first season was amazing and the 2nd wasn't the worse the issue is the quality of story telling and the writers attentions and focus's being all over the place and how consistent. If you want to tell a story you should have your story planned throughout to keep it on a certain path. If you want the show to be a take on racism with the monster mewman stuff sure do that just make sure to write it in a way that doesn't seem lazy and shoehorned in. Want a romance story focus on that without the other bits. Hell you can even do both if the writing there. But I do see your points and I see the validity there and I definitely could have cleaned up this video its been a year so my points weren't as solid but I appreciate your comment thank you for watching.

    Apprently as well. In season 1 and most of 2's development. the show had writers from avatar the last airbender on it's team which honeslty expalins alot. In season 1 the show was great at juggling a large cast of major and minor characters as well as having a slowly building overarching plot. However in 2 you can really feel the show starting to buckle and that's beacuse the writers left to go make dragon prince halfway through season 2's creation. this explains A LOT about what feels so off about seaosn 2 as it's essiently Daron Nefcy startign to to take direct writing control and the old writers leaving.
    This would explain alot about seasons 3 and 4 and esepcially when some earth characters like Jackie or Janna feel unfinished and like they had something in the works to be revealed but it went nowwhere. Most likley left over plot outlines from the avatar wrriters.

    I honestly love watching reviews of this show cuz I actually dropped it after the s2 finale. There was a lot of problems and I wanted to give it a shot and hope it got better but it never did. And then after the s3 premiere all of those problems got so much worse.
    I can’t tell if fans just never noticed or they just looked past the cons cus the pros were so good until the cons started outweighing the pros. Either way, it’s fun to look back at it in retrospect.

    Yeah ok just gonna weigh in here. On something that nobody talks about/has mentioned yet in everywhere i have read.
    As i re watched the finale i think i got it. I think i got why the finale upset me so much. It was a subtle writing flaw that ticked me off as a writer that i didn't get until now. But now that i do ii understand why i still have issues. Simply put i let myself be confused by her wanting to stop mina. This is not important in the long run.
    What upset me so much was that Star never considered all the problems for others not on mewni without magic(or the spells) . what star did was the antithesis of the whole show, she became what she hated, a queen making a big decision for everyone else without actually considering the wants and needs of others. That is why i was so upset. When you break it down that is so against what Star's character is that it's downright upsetting.
    It sort of just...Makes her what she hated so much.
    Someone who makes decisions for others, saying it's for the best without asking anyone else.
    Literally her entire problem with the commission was this very thing and them lying about it saying ti was for the greater good of mewni.
    She basically does the same thing
    that feels so wrong
    Its just...
    So selfish.
    And there are no real consequences or fallout of this that affects her in a negative personal way
    It makes Star almost into a Mary Sue
    Everyone loves her and accepts her decisions no matter what and faces no consequences for her actions
    She kills magic and gets the guy in the end
    Simply put it makes star a hypocrite. Think about it. Star is litteraly a giant hypocrite by the end of the series and nobody points this out or addresses it. Heck even most people pointing out the problems of the show DON'T point THIS out either.

    For me, it all comes down to three problems, or four technically. First, fan service, we all love fan service but they incorporated it so much that it just felt like the series was just a shipping garbage fire. Im fine with star being with tom for a while since it just builds up development. But why in gods name does marco decide to build a harem? (Hekapoo, star, kelly, jackie) and you know what, i wouldve been happy if jackie was the only other person marco was "with" since as i said, it was just development and it was obvious star was gonna be with marco. But for example the kelly one even got to the point where they even kissed, but what happens the next episodes? Absolutely nothing, its like it never even happened. Second point, filler, filler is a normal thing in a lot of shows but the way that 90% of svtfoe season 3 and 4 even though theyre strictly lore based, it just becomes filler, and the funny thing is, if they took some of that filler and made it where star and marco got together, nothing wouldve been wrong with the end because it wouldnt have been rushed and they wouldnt have to pan between star and marco ship and the literal war going on. And last but not least, "No direction." thats the only thing that this show screams to me after eclipsa is introduced, like, absolutely nothing of importance happens, yes i guess the racism between monsters and mewmans but even then, they didnt execute that correctly as you said and I agree, its like there was no plan/rushed. But it wasnt, there was time and planning behind this, and they decided to turn it into this. And for last my opinion on the show, yes, i still absolutely love this show, even though there is so many problems and it ending breaks my heart, i love the starco ship, and i love the "romance" moments they get, but, its just way too many problems for me to be biased and say that star vs the forces of evil is a good show in general.
