Please look carefully at the end of this video: Mr. Perahia was in significant pain and couldn't make the bows he has made in the past. He was most likely experiencing back pain throughout the performance, and yet he remained totally focused on his musical intention. It was a courageous performance. Heartbreaking that this concerto was the last of Mozart's: only one of two in a minor key, and with the exception of the Larghetto movement, it had no peaceful resolution. The rondo was tortured and angry, then finally flippant, a kind of "eff you" in answer to all the angst he expressed. Bravo, MBE Perahia! Your playing has enriched my life and continues to inspire me with joy and great love.

Magnifique ?

A huge thank you to Sonorum Concentus Classic for uploading this video. I've appreciated Murray Perahia's performances for decades, as he performed his NY recitals in Seattle for a trial run. It's been an adventure of following his path from becoming a consummate musician to a virtuoso and back to the music he loves most. Sadly, this will be the only venue will I see him on. His luscious tone raised the hairs on my back of my neck (literally!) when I heard the first twelve bars of his opening recital of Chopin's Barcarolle. At that moment I knew I had to go back to learn how to create that amazing, delicious tone, despite a lucrative career. Did that, lucky to have a wonderful teacher who worked with Perahsia during. Rudolph Serkn's time at the Curtis Institute. This man's music has made my life more challenging, more wonderful, and more enthused with joy and wonder than I could ever express.

I remember attending a master class given by Mr. Perahia where he commented "Mistakes are absolutely unimportant" [in a performance]. Fortunately, I've been able to attend his performances for decades, and while he always had a number of wrong notes, the musical intention was never lost.

@@guillote75 He and Barenboim both originally started their conducting careers from behind the keyboard in Mozart cycles with the English Chamber Orchestra, and how far Barenboim's conducting career went. Perahia, despite a period of medical difficulties with his hands, apparently chose not to conduct full time. I suspect Perahia's a bit of an introvert. I know he felt very close to Schumann's music when he was a young pianist. Perahia always seemed to me sort of an Eusebius, combined with a frustrated Florestan. I remember him almost exasperated at the notion that Mozart was delicate, soft Rococo music. And he collaborated so well with Solti, and in the Bartok sonata for 2 pianos and percussion yet!

@@gburgess1295 Plus it seems he was having back pain again. If I were a professional pianist I would not like to perform under a major back pain problem. He could have, but he did play,
