Esthere Wamgall, don't know from which country you are, but here, in embattled Ukraine, after listening to this concert, I was going to make the identical comment - until I saw yours. Thank you for expressing it so beautifully.
I began taping my dad's LPs for my Walkman in 1981. Through college and into adult life I listened to all the mozart concerti, between 3 and 12 recordings of each, some of them dozens of times. This one, K450, K453, K466, K467, K491, and K503 I have each heard well over 100 times. Какое счастье, что был такой Гений, и подарил Нам, живущим далеко после Него , Наслаждение слушать и слышать и наслаждаться его Величайшими Музыкальными Произведениями
The play is entirely mastered: you can listen how each musical note sings (which differentiates Mozart from other composers of the romantic era such as Chopin with a lot of chords, with Mozart each single note must be expressed gracefully), how the trills are evenly layered, how the nuances are perfectly respected (legato or staccato, piano or forte). The interpreter brings its own musical coulant effect coming just a bit from the romantic era, but expresses the music as a confidential dialogue with himself and the orchestra altogether. Nuances are never exaggerated. There is reason why they say Mozart is easy for the beginner and difficult for the Master. Mrs Pires does a magnificent demonstration which you have to appreciate.
This is a very special piece in my opinion, it shows delicacy with child like innocence. Like a beautiful small flower popping up from the ground in spring. I remember walking in Mozart his house in Vienna and had some music on in my earpiece while walking his room, watching his views while he wrote the Vienna sonata's. Its was truly an experience I won't forget, I had the delight to share this with my sweet grandmother who showed me classic music all these years ago. Divinamente hermoso! Bravo!!!
A great performance of a special bit of Mozart .The thing here is the absence of any feeling that the music is being rushed , a pianist who combines strength with musical intelligence and an orchestra which is in complete accord. Very special.
In the early Mozart piano concertos, one *does* often get the unnerving feeling of a rushed tempo, doesn’t one? Yet in this concerto, Mozart finally seems to have mastered the form, and as a result, as you aptly said, we are blessed with “a special bit of Mozart.” To my ear, parts of this piece seem to almost *anticipate* that extraordinarily beautiful moment in the third movement of Piano Concerto #13, when the lighthearted rondeau theme of the orchestra is brought to a halt by the piano, which proceeds to give us one of the most meditative, expressive, and thoughtful moments of solitary, private melancholy in all of Mozart’s piano works…
Wonderful interpretation by Maria Joao Pires of this seminal work by Mozart, written when he was only 21, with an innovative (contrary to contemporary convention) very early introduction of the solo instrument, the piano, right after the opening bars, which Beethoven later adopted in his fourth and fifth piano concertos. What is also innovative is the degree of interchange and sharing of melodies, between piano and orchestra. Really wonderful.
This is simply fantastic. What virtuosity, what depth by Ms Pires!!! I heard this piece fully for the first time at a concert last kight, but couldnt understand what all the fuss was about, but hearing it now from this artist, it all makes sense to me. Truly outstanding in the work of Mozart!!

I AGREE.This concerto is indeed a gem. It was written when Mozart was 21. For him that was middle age sad to say.. He had already written quite a few operas. At a youthful age he could produce something as tender and full of heartfelt themes that sprung from his incredible musical feeling within him. All this and he is writing in the accepted concerto sonata form.
Some observations regarding form in the first movement. As is usual the opening theme group 1 starts the 1) piano entrance 2) the development 3) the recapitulation 4) the cadenza. Of course theme group one starts the orchestral exposition. Also interestingly, the movement started with a piano entrance which is very unorthodox. Mozart uses this intro to end the movement as well giving it a classical symmetry.
