      It is interesting that that was the imagery that the music produced for him, given Alex gray's kelidescopic work, and the sacred hall of mirrors. It almost seems hard to believe in a way that someone could make that connection without knowing.

      Doug Arnold Tool was an acquired taste for me but grabbed me after I first heard them at 16 when the song Stinkfist came out in 1996 off their second album Aenima.
      At 16 their songs went way over my head and only after I saw/heard them live did I really appreciate how unique and complex they were, as I hadn’t seen or heard anything like it before and had seen hundreds of bands live like Metallica, Panterra, Pearl Jam, Faith No More, Sound Garden, Maryline Manson, Korn, Placebo, Whole, the Offspring, RHCP etc etc
      If you watch clips of Tool in 1994 before half of those songs in the concert came out you’ll hear silence from the crowd during the songs new songs partly because they had never heard anything like it before. Songs like “Pushit” and “H” and a bunch more. Going from Grunge bands, to that.

    Listening to Tool is an introspective experience. Don’t go into a song with expectations, try to go with their flow instead.
    Use a lyric video to understand the song better, but don’t expect to understand the track on your first listen. Tool’s songs get better after listening to them multiple times, because they reveal themselves to you more with every experience.

    Tool , from day one, has just gained equity and purity in my music library. They are truly masters at what they do.

    I love the moment when his vocals come in... everyone else keeps playing the same rhythm but his voice becomes the down-beat, switching up the entire cadence of the melody

    Hmmm. Well, I'd recommend either "Pushit" or "H."' which get as close as you can get to "slow death" like you said. But "The Grudge" is pretty indicative of Tool's overall sound.

    A lot of people are saying to start off slow but your facial reaction at the very beginning set the tone for all of Tool. They will make you feel every kind of emotion. All their songs amazing. Do them all.

    • @christophbresch
      @christophbresch 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      for me, lyrics come later, the first couple of hundred listens it's just about the sonic experience. if you read the lyrics while listening you automatically get distracted from the other instruments - it would be like reading the guitar, bass or drum sheets while listening (i've done all of that, but only after i knew the songs by heart)

    My first was "ænema". That was 19 yrs ago. Imagine seeing your cousin have a full blown seizure to a badass song you're hearing for the first time and you're actually torn between stopping the track and getting your cousin some medical attention...
