Great video drumeo!
Idk... I think the Primus one might have been the most difficult.
What a stud.
That was CLEAN AF. I can't believe he nailed that after 5 hours
It's just amazing the compliment Mike gives Danny and Tool throughout this whole video. You know, just the guy from that simple musical project Liquid Tension Experiment.
Now guys you have to bring Danny and make him learn The Dance Of Eternity
The DREAM!
Dude make it happen. @BrandonToews
We need this. Or some LTE.
It's only fair. Haha.
@@BrandonToews Seriously, we need DC on Drumeo. The world would be complete having him jam to a song he's never heard before (although good luck finding one, he listens to a lot of different stuff)
Glad to see you all enjoying this exercise in human torture! 😂😝 Also, relieved to see I’m not getting bashed (at least too badly) for not “nailing it”…yes, this was a massive challenge!!
As I mentioned in the video, I think watching Danny’s performance video and taking a look at the transcriptions were surely helpful…those are two additional tools I would’ve utilized at home if I were auditioning for a band or preparing to learn songs for a tour…
(I also am NOT a professional transcriber nor sight reader…which would’ve surely sped up the process for a lot of drummers who are good at that)
Surely this playthrough is rough in spots, but I did the best I could with the pressure of cameras rolling and a clock ticking…what a challenge!!! Wow… 🤯
epic god
Stunning work Mike! Is not just the humble way that you took the challenge but the interpretation itself give me a lot of goosebumps. Thank you! 🫶🏻
This was so much fun to watch. You are an absolute beast and did an amazing job!
Love everything about this video and how much fun you all had making it. Thanks for participating and showing us your process and taking it so seriously while having a great time.
Sir, this was brilliant and so much fun to watch...
"Danny Carey, Lose my number, I don't want this gig"
had me HOWLING
The fact that someone could learn this song so well in 5 hours is still absolutely astonishing!!
Yeah honestly, you can give me 5 years and I won't get anywhere close.
Mike is one of the goats
Let Danny try dance of eternity and watch him crumble

Release the Collins interview!
Looking forward to this! Is the Blake Richardson stream going to be reuploaded soon aswell? Also highly stoked for that!
Brandon you crazy devil 😈😎
I am at most a desk drummer but these vids make me wish I had the coordination to do better :D This one's going to be a ride, thanks mate
I will thank you now, later, and every time you guys make cool stuff like this.
I think what Drumeo did here was probably one of the most important videos to their channel - you just showed thousands of aspiring drummers, that even after decades of playing and probably being one of the best drummers of all time, even people like Portnoy still struggle learning certain songs.
True learning never stops! Thank you Drumeo!
Well said brother.
Keep evolving 🤘🥁🤘
Hail to that!!!
Straight dropping knowledge on em! Such a fun watch
Amen brother
I just wrote this exact sentiment to my best friend - it's so nice to see a legend appear human. Well, at least for a few hours 😂.
I would literally pay money to watch Danny Carey watching this video.
This made me simultaneously appreciate Portnoy, Danny Carey and Pneuma even more! 😲
“This makes dream theater sound like weezer” is one of the biggest compliments Danny Carey will ever get 😭
Prove it.
From none other than Mike F'n Portnoy
Ever idk but that is definitely high praise.
If you combined Portnoy and Carey youd have Super Peart.
dude he nailed it there. He says hey Danny loose my number😂😂😂
" 6-5 ... 6 6 5 ...The Neighbor of the beast " made me laugh so much
The Neighbor of Order 66 followed by the Neighbor of the Beast.
I seriously want to design a shirt now with Eddie from Maiden on the front lawn of a fifties-style home, waving like a neighbor, with that phrase "665 The Neighbor of the Beast!" 😝
Gold!
The "Neighbor of the beast" joke for 665 was done in Max Payne.
@@Jayzon666and in Alan Wake 2 recently
To hear Portnoy sound so human is honestly refreshing. I think this video shows that hard work is the key, not God given talent. Portnoy got where he is through pure dedication and grit.
right!? liek he heard a thing & went 'on HELL no' then just dug in & did his damndest
(i know f-a about music so, to me both original & the version here are incredible)
It's one thing to have God-given talent. What's up to you is what you choose to do with it
Mike has a God given talent to be fair. But the the amount work he put into this and the humble approach is impressive.
To be at the top of your game, without a doubt, God given talent, along with sharpness of mind and an uncompromising drive and dedication to your craft is a must, along with having a creative generous spirit and being willing to collaborate without ego. Without all of these attributes, you can never reach this level of success, no matter how talented you are.
At 19:43 seeing Mikes face as he , unintentionally , flips and catches his stick after an intense fill is a testament to exactly how good he is....
When you guys get Danny Carey in to cover a Dream Theater song, Mike has to be there just so he can talk sh!t to Danny. 🤣
I really like this idea.
Have him do that wack section in Dark Eternal Night
Most Liquid Tension Experiments would probably harder, but for Dream Theater, Danny could definetly do The Great Debate
Danny would slay it, and Portnoy would probably never touch the song again.
@@inconnector not even
"This makes Dream Theater sound like Weezer" got me good

Same.
He’s being very humble. On the whole Dream Theater has significantly more complex sections that Tool.

This vid should be an inspiration to all musicians. To watch MIKE FRICKIN' PORTNOY stare blankly into space and be, like, "Wtf am i supposed to do with this?" is incredible. Even more incredible, he took a swing and gave it a damn good shot. It should remind all of us, There's ALWAYS another level. There's ALWAYS someone who makes you think, "Gawd, what's the point?". Just take a swing at it.
I have never played drums in my life, but this is insane.
I tried once. Just once.

When you know how to play drums, it's even more insane lmao this shit is like through the fire and the flames for drummers
"It's all sixes and fives and threes, but that's all of music," spoken like a true prog drummer.
Like "mfers condensed the whole of music in this hellish song to play" hahah
That's so funny and accurate. Screw twos and fours!
"Six six five... The NEIGHBOR of the beast."LOL 🤣
I KNOW, I audibly laughed when he said that.
Watching _Mike Portnoy_ blue screen like a normal person listening to this is honestly inspirational.
Right?! Instead of making me want to quit music, I kinda want to buy that drum set now :)
Mike accomplished in 3-4 hrs what i have not been able to in 2 years. Even though I am not being filmed and pressured and had the playthrough video since square one...
Granted, even though there is no one to see me, im still afraid of trying it on my drumkit
so, when all incredibly talented octopus-like drummers on earth are actually normal and humble persons, what does it say about the normal person? Yes, every normal person has the theoretical capabilities to be the next Mike Portnoy or Danny Carey. It's a material quesion at the end, frankly
I have been playing drums (not very consistently) for about 10 years now. Im average at best, if you gave me a solid year to work on this song i think i could really nail that beginning part of the song. You know? That silent part waiting for the guitar to come in? that part.
I play bass and it's making me think about giving Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) another shot from him blue screening on Tool
YES dude! To all aspiring drummers, this video shows one of the best drummers to ever walk the earth struggling to learn a song. It's not a skill you learn in a few hours, or days, or weeks. Dont give up guys! If you get frustrated, just remember everyone to ever pick up a pair of sticks has been there, and watch this video to remind yourself that no matter your skill level you WILL mess up, you WILL feel silly. Persevere, and you WILL get better every single time you hit a drum head with a stick.
Just want to sincerely thank Mike for his effort with A7X after the passing of the Rev. I can't even imagine being asked to fill in a spot like that and obliging. I honestly want to just thank him for helping the boys move forward so they can keep making music in the wake of it all. As a lifelong fan of music this was his single greatest contribution to me personally. Thanks Mike!
“This is not a song, this is a Mathematical Equation” pure FACTS

Every music is a mathematical equation. Some are just extremely hard math (like this one)!

Wow! Mike gave credit calling this a masterpiece. And after 5 1/2 hours we got to see a legend play another legends work. Thank you for this video! What makes me keep returning to it is that you're showing an inside learning process, nicely edited but still one can see all ups and downs of the process. Being a musician myself, I can totally relate to it. And Mr Portnoy does an amazing job here!
TOOL's music is nothing short of a musical Big Bang, a cosmic creation and simultaneously, a poignant end to the universe. It's an experience that has left me utterly speechless, a testament to the profound impact their artistry has had on me. Their sonic landscapes unfold like the universe itself, with layers of intricate melodies, and each lyric carries the weight of a collapsing star - intense, deep, and emotionally explosive.
In every note, TOOL manages to encapsulate the essence of a journey, a voyage through the vast expanse of emotions. It's as if they've tapped into the very fabric of existence, weaving together a tapestry of sound that resonates with the complexities of life. The music is a gentle caress for the mind and soul, a cosmic embrace that leaves an indelible mark.
And this particular song, it feels like the Big Bang of all Big Bangs - a creation that takes shape only to unravel, making way for a rebirth. It's a musical metamorphosis, a celestial dance where every note and lyric converges and diverges in a cosmic rhythm. This composition is more than just an auditory experience; it's a journey through the cycles of creation and destruction, a sonic representation of the universe's eternal ebb and flow. (16.6.2024)

Listen to Images And Words from 92 and thank me later, it was the album that got me into them, easiest to dig into. The last song 'Learning To Live' is probably their best song to me
@@serroche actually gonna thank you right away god knows when we meet next time 😁🙌 Spotified right now 👍 gonna dig it some time soon ✌️ peace
This was insanely enjoyable to watch! I dont play any kind of music, but watching how a musicians brain works when listening to other people playing the same instrument, and the effort it takes, is just hands down incredible. Lots of respect and cred to Mike! This was sick!
Thanks Drumeo, that was such an enjoyable video to watch. Beyond his incredible druming skills, Mike shows us his humanity, humility and humor! What a great dude.
More generally, the video shows how much it all comes down to work, and how each person has his or her own learning process.
For example, Dennis Chambers almost instantly guessed the main time signatures in Schism. Does it mean that he's better than Mike (assuming there is any sense asking that question) ? Of course not. Only two monsters with different learning and expressing paths.
At the end, Mike killed it and what he created to fill the interlude/bridge is just mind blowing.
Cheers from France to all the Drumeo team!
Just want to say the “total time spent” is incorrect. It should have said: “5 hours and 30 minutes today + a lifetime of dedication learning to play the drums”. It literally took Mike the decades he’s been playing to be able to pull off something of the magnitude. Absolutely astounding. 🤯
Facts
Absolutely true. You know though, there is a 9 year old Asian kid who smokes this song somewhere in the world. Lol.
Well said
Yea and he's a disappointment to the family cos his cousin did it at 4 years old @@kpag3030
@@kpag3030😂😂
I love how he calls Danny's playing "tasty" while most drummers heads explode while trying to learn this song. There's a reason why you are both in the GOAT category and mandatory listening for drummers everywhere.
….he got brutalized by this song. Bad. You must not be a drummer….
@@andrewjung6987 using.... periods.... doesnt...... make...... you..... cool... If you were a drummer you'd appreciate this entire video, obviously you aren't either lmfao.
Tenei la tetai caida
@@CookilyOfficial “lmfao”
@@andrewjung6987 "Brutalized" is a stretch. I am a drummer of 20+ years, and anyone who can perform a passable rendition of this song after a little over 5 hours of working it out is God tier.
Wow. I never watch TH-cam videos longer than a few minutes. That’s 30 minutes of my life that I’ll never get back and I’m okay with that, I prefer how I spent it. You just learned one of the most difficult songs ever written in like 5 hours. You just gained a fan. Gonna go search for your shit and hear you. Amazing. Respect. Fucking rock!
There's a few Drumeo videos of MP playing through his compositions. It's great, he also tells some stories around it. Quite entertaining. Enjoy! On the other end of the spectrum there's videos from Loudwire where he plays on a Hello Kitty kids drum set and after a few years they upgraded him to a Pokemon set. 😂
Portnoy at his prime, look this up on TH-cam if you're curious: Dream Theater Instrumedley PORTNOY ONLY - "The Dance of Instrumentals". It's a medley of different songs, lots of twists and turns.
Fantastic! Just LOVED this video. Great job Mike and great attitude. :)
The best part of this session is that he became determined to crack it. At least in what we get to see, he never get's overly frustrated, always seems to be having fun. Makes it so enjoyable to watch.
Yeah paying someone handsomely will do that
@jamesadamgleason9471 no guarantee he's getting paid for this, however, directly... that is, this is definitely good press for their upcoming album.
@@jamesadamgleason9471 You really think this was all about money?
@@jamesadamgleason9471Do you work for free?
Mike calls wife: "Honey, I'll see you in December. F*cking Drumeo did this to us." My take - they hate you, Mike. This was time signature waterboarding. I'd file with the Geneva convention, brother.
"Time signature waterboarding" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
What time signature does Danny Carey play in? - Yes...
@@HotSkorpion actually, that’s Bill Bruford. ;-)
"time signature waterboarding" is fucking hilarious :'DD
Best thing I've watched on TH-cam this week! Great job Mike!
Love every second. Amazing job MP!!!
Danny Carey should react to this video. And then Danny Carey should learn a dream theater song to be fair
That would be epic
He should tackle The Glass Prison 😎
FAIR IS FAIR
YES!
Danny playing sixteenth notes using a Swiss triplet stick pattern for like six minutes with one foot thinking in threes and the other in fours is superhuman. An evil ask to make to Mike, but he performed unbelievably!
Bro understanding that is superhuman too! lol
as soon as that kicked in, my head started to hurt. the sticking was in my head, the kick was in my head, and my brain said durrr

A true masterpiece and a true master Rising to the challenge. A thing of beauty to watch. TY!
Outstanding!! Really enjoyed watching Mike push through this. Definitely looking forward to seeing Danny Carey on here learning a DT song - I bet he's already practicing!
This was just awesome. Drumeo makes constantly great videos, but this was just wow! Portnoy - hell of a job!🤘🤘🤘🤘
That is actually amazing, I really hope the non-drummer viewers realize the absolutely insane gap between trying to learn a song like this in a few hours vs. a standard 4/4 song with maybe a few shifts
mindf*ckin' experience!
I'm not a drummer but I can recognize how mindblowing this video is
Non drummer but guitarist here. Tool songs in general are tough to learn, but the guitar parts are miles easier to learn than the drums.
For drums, not only do you have to play the odd time signatures, but you also have to learn the polyrhythms and execute them with multiple limbs.
I’m always impressed with drummers who cover Tool, and for Mike to tackle it in this short amount of time is amazing.
@@Don_Josefo Same here, I reckon it would take me the rest of my life to learn this, if that.
Very apparent. Haha.
The fact that we have Mike in his natural environment showing the reality of the process without the ego interfering in any way is for me the greatest asset of this video! Yes, more than five hours, yes, final version in several takes, yes, imperfect...but guess what, this is the reality! The human aspect presented in this video is gold! Learning to appreciate Mike even more! Thanks Drumeo!
Well said. It's a reminder that all of us go thru this to learn songs, even the best like Mike.
No embarrassment, no ego...just learn the music.
his ego was there all along. he dont want to be showed as bad drummer. and etc and etc
@@user-bv3qt2jt2v Yeah, but every great has an ego. The trick is aiming it back at yourself as motivation, rather than at other people.
@@user-bv3qt2jt2v I believe there is a misconception on your part, I said ''...without the ego interfering...'' the fact that your ego is always part of you does not mean that you will let it act in an erratic way, which is actually the case here...lack of basic text interpretation ...
@@leerobbo92 Excellent observation, very well said.
Just caught up with that. What an excellent video. Really enjoyed it. What a lesson in learning. The back and forth was as much fun as the drumming parts. Mike is a trooper, great guy.
23:32 shows you how good Mike is. He even incorporated some of his DT licks in a Tool classic. Amazing.
Thank you for this video @Drumeo
Dear Editor, thank you for your service.
This is a wonderful thing for a drummer at Mike's level to do for aspiring drummers. Showing himself struggling, making mistakes, and being human. This is the process. This is the reality. He wasn't born a magical drum god. He works his ass off.
Amen!
Here here
It's about the work. Learning the sing lead was 4 hours straight twice a week plus shows, and about a year and a half to 2 years of that. Nobody realizes the hours and time it takes to be great at something.
Hermosa sesion , cuanto trabajo, un gran ejemplo para comprender que nada es facil. Felicitaciones DRUMEO Y Mike, gracias por compartir, saludos desde Argentina!
Amazing to watch the journey - both the song and the expert analysis.
"I don't want this gig, Danny Carey lose my number" hahaha I'm dead. This is fantastic!
This tells us that there is no single best drummer in the world. Each drummer is unique, with their own style and performance. We love and enjoy every masterpiece they create. Thanks, Drumeo, for this episode. ❤❤❤❤
Pretty sure this does nothing to show that Danny isn't the best in the world
@@radicalstanza3614 I bet Danny would be the first person to say he isn't the best in the world.
@@radicalstanza3614 like you could write anything close to it 🤣🤣🤣
One lesson here for the learning: even the best of the best must work VERY hard. Talent by itself is not enough. There was a time when even Danny couldn't play Pneuma.
@user-zo5hz4fy6t you may want to reread what you're replying to. He would be agreeing.
thats amazing and a great lesson for all musician! how you can organize all the info and set up your mind. thanks drumeo and Mike
The complexity and the insane amount of detail of learning this song!! I’m the same way, I’m feel guy when learning a drum piece. I have a hard time understanding sheet music main. But listening and watching does help me. I watch this video and I go , Mike is so humble and him admitting that it’s hard learning this song!
