It's a time of reflection ( see what I did there, also a great song ) Saturn ascending and then returning is a chance for you let go of the past and move on and evolve. I think. The choose one or ten has to do with kaballah and the tree of life. The first sphere of the tree being keter or " crown " and the tenth is yesod which is seen as a vehicle that allows movement. 'Saturn' was also likely intended to reference the Tree of Life. Each sephira on the tree has an associated planet, and the one that is associated with Saturn is the 3rd sephira, Binah. It is generally thought to represent understanding or contemplation. I'm sure that the "comes back around" part is a reference to Saturn's astrological orbit, but I think the reason he mentions Saturn to begin with is probably due to its significance in the Kabbalah Tree of Life.

"Turn these leaden grudges into gold" is a reference to alchemy, which was, theoretically, a process of turning lead into gold, which was really just a metaphor for spiritual growth/transcendence.
As a long-time Tool fan, I am hard pressed to find a "bad" song in their catalogue. There is something to like in every song, but this, this song, is a top tier song. Aenima and Lateralus are companion albums in a way. And The Grudge (first song on Lateralus right after which came out after Aenima) perfectly shows and explains how, bridging the gap. Ill explain, made me appreciate and love both even more once i really realized this, hopefully itll do the same for you. Aenima is total pessimism. Burn it all, flush it all away, as a mentality. Angry album. But then Lateralus came out and it is all about letting go, and being zen and realizing theres more to the world and conciousness you can aspire yourself and your surroundings to. Its truly an amazing musical progression of a band those back to back (amazing) albums and how distinctly diff their messages and feel are. And how deliberate Tool made them that way. (And 10,000 Days which came 5 years later is all about his mother's 30 years dealing with paralysis then finally dying, and is sort of his emotional release all about all of it)
Interesting that you mentioned Area 51. The theme on this tour focused on a lot of extraterrestrial imagery .One of the interludes on this album ,Faaip De Ooid,is a recording of a caller into paranormal radio host Art Bell’s show back in the 90’s trying to warn the listeners of an alien takeover. The broadcast gets cutoff by an unknown source while the caller is freaking out . He had claimed he used to work for Area 51 and the government was spying on his activities. Tool had originally wanted to use the interlude using Enochian chanting, but their sound engineer freaked out claiming aliens were stalking him. They changed it to this recording.
i always got chills and was freaked out by that "filler track" Faaip de ooid, so much so I deleted it from my computer. Now i know why it gave me the creeps. thanks!
its funny, because i used to be a HipHop listener than dipped my toes into nu-metal with Korn en Deftones, then following Deftones and witnessing their growth while discovering bands like Tool just gave me the same feeling....HipHop didn't hit me the same as before, it almost feels empty in a way. Still, i dont mind a banger every now and then, but men, musically this music has so much more to offer.
I was lucky enough to see them play this whole album like 2 days after it came out, I celebrate their entire catalogue, but this album is still my favorite. Definitely gotta react to the many gems on this album.
i was going to say the same, then i had a thought, all the other great tracks , so hard to say that with tool, defo top 7, no, 8 a feck, 10 :-) i like it allot lol
The Grudge is my number one. Hits me every time in the chest. My eyes start watering as it forces me to think of ways to make amends to some of my estranged family members, words to say, to sooth the pain, heal the wounds. Time is not on our side. Better get busy “letting go” or “get busy dying” with the unresolved...all of it. Dust in the wind, and it’s too late by then.

Pushit is a must, but it's still better to hear the album version first. The Salival version is still better in the context of the original version, which I'm sure most people heard first anyways.
Lateralus is where Tool turned the corner from metal to Prog metal, as far as I'm concerned. You can see on Aenima where it was starting to head that way, but it was really Lateralus that cemented their reputation for being pioneers and pushing the musical thresholds that they do. So glad you have been enjoying them and helping spread the love around the Internet.

Hey J/J Loving your reactions and just the pure joy and excitement you show while discovering new music. I think you’re as much a Tool fan as anybody, your ‘interpretations’ are as valid as any. Holding onto a grudge is a waste, holding on too long will change you. Dealing with a grudge in the right way is to let go, to drop that weight you’ve been carrying. Inflexible entrenchment vs foundational growth. The Saturn thing I think is from astrology, from a concept they call the Saturn return. Basically the same thing about holding onto grudges, letting negativity control you can change you
You know you pretty much nailed it .I first seen tool for the first time in 1992 they were the most underrated rock band of the time and no one paid attention to them. It’s only been recently that they’ve gained a lot of attention it literally took 28 years for people to pay attention to them and now they’re seeing them for the geniuses they are.
So glad to see you enjoy it so much. I think you were pretty spot on with interpreting the lyrics, at least with how I look at them. Sometimes I go deeper but I am not very good explaining what's in my head sometimes
That line where u said you can't listen to rap the same anymore because it doesn't hit you same is on point. I grew up listening to and appreciating all kinds of music. Everything from classical, blues, country to hiphop. But once you hit the realm of RATM & TOOL plus others your music world changes forever. Welcome brother, and rock on....
Jamel, Saturn comes back around is when it's in the same positions as when you were born. The scream at the end is the letting out of the things inside causing you to hold a grudge.
i am so glad .... so many folks have introduced you to such a bunch of amazing music.. man there's so much. Like 2000 and back. nothing notable since.... imho. Much love Jemal!💛
Why I prefer this type of music. As people we all have a basic start point from which to grow. Different conditions, experiences, and biology play huge factors in who we become, but some things escape these boundaries and affect us all as human beings. What this music does is it allows you to step outside of yourself and reexamine yourself and the world around you without the bias of the conditions that made us who we are. It helps us to better understand how we are, why we are, what we are, and our greater roll. Even if this roll is meek it is no less important than any other. We are indeed all brothers and sisters who are much more alike than we are disparate. I think we would all do well to remember this from time to time.
The music of Tool hits your soul like no other if you allow it. Their live shows are an incredibly spiritual experience and definitely worth seeing at least once in your life.
I think Saturn Coming Back Around Again, refers to Saturn Return in an Astrological sense. It refers to Saturn being in the same position in the sky as you were when you were born and that is around 29-30 years of age. It is seen as a significant time in someone's life, where things get reassessed. It is seen as a time where you move from what you were 'given' as a child and become the person you are as an adult. This often means letting go of things that don't serve you anymore and become the person you want to/need/should be. Holding a grudge for example.
Love your channel. You're absolutely right about how Tool can diminish other music. I struggle to find anything else that can entertain my mind the way Tool can.
your reaction for the scream at the end and the outro is priceless! great song and a beast to play accurately as a drummer. once you get done with these tool songs, you should see how they all relate and fit w/ each other in the album. the members of tool are geniuses.
I saw Laterallus Tour in Boulder Colorado USA, 2013. 3rd Row, Drummer Stole the Show. They did this whole Album in Order.🌟🌟🌟🌟 very impressive Musicianship.
I love that you said that you don't listen to rap the same way and this music has changed you. Each genre has its purposes and appeal. Simplistic forms of music tap into basic primal urges and desires while more intricate and technical styles also touch on those subjects at times, they make you look at them differently.
Bro, please react to "Hatesong" live in Chicago by Porcupine Tree. I also recommend the french band Gojira, you should begin with "Explosia" or "Silvera"
I really love seeing other people's reactions to things like this. It allows me to see other interpretations of them. It also points out things that I missed and makes me listen it a new way.
I used to be confused about the Saturn part too, but it's an astrology thing; "The Saturn Return is when the planet Saturn comes back to meet your natal Saturn. It takes about 29.5 years for this slow-mover to return to where it was when you were born. The Saturn return hits in the late 20s and its impact is felt into the early 30s. During a return, Saturn's energy can pull at you in an even more intense way than usual. It might ask you to know yourself in ways you haven't so far. It might ask you to set limits for yourself. It might ask you to accept a new heaviness, a new maturity, a new sense of responsibility." I'm not into astrology myself, but I appreciate the metaphor of a time/ challenge to grow. To cast off the weight of our 'grudges', to grow by letting go.
Dude, you hit it right on target! Your perspective comes across as being very intellectual. I'm loving watching all the black folks reactions. I'm a 44 year old white hipster and man this band brought me some much needed wisdom in my late teens.
"Saturn comes back around, lifts you up like a child", I'm pretty sure is a reference to the god Saturn devouring his children, in mythology, as illustrated in the Goya painting, "Saturn devouring his son". At least that's that's how I always took it.
You just reminded me that we don't listen to Tool, we experience it. So many levels that one song turns into many and you don't want it to stop. You really get it and it's fun to watch you split some brain cells taking it all in. Keep them coming.
You got to love that primal scream at the end. The absolute internal rage it takes to truly let go of a grudge that you have been holding onto, in your core, for your whole life.

They always make you think, which is one reason this never gets old. I swear I appreciate each song differently each time I listen.
I am so grateful to you, Jamal, for reacting to Tool. I love how you appreciate their art and attention to detail. This band is special, and you see that.
Although there is so much more to say about this song, I'll spare you. Great reaction. Thank you.
I love it! You really need to check out the O'Keefe Music Foundation cover of 46 & 2. School kids perfectly covering the song!!!

It’s amazing
The singer from this song has her own band now with some of the other O'Keefe kids. Saving Escape is their name check em out.
You are killing it today with the song choices.
Appreciate you, brother!
Lateralus is probably their best album overall. MJK's voice was never better (that 20-second scream!) and every single track is a winner. Cannot wait for you to do Parabol / Parabola....
Jason Levine Probably? Lateralus IS there best album. You can make the argument it is THE best album since Abbey Road.
@@toddgersh Tastes vary and I never try to make a declarative statement if only because I don't want to fight the person who prefers 10,000 Days or Fear Innoculum. Suffice to say we're all in the Tool Army because we love Tool and how we measure that love is less relevant than the acknowledgement that it exists.
Jason Levine wanna argue about that? Just jokes. Me funny. Lateralus number 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agreed. Lateralus is a audible walk through magic.
28 seconds to be precise.
Culling Voices has become one of my favorites from them recently. You should really listen to the songs Disposition, Reflection, and Triad on the Lateralus album, back to back without stopping. It's a journey.
Took me a minute for CV to grab me, but when it finally did.....you know the rest.

Welcome!!

Tim Matthews bruh
Lol just started watching this guy saw he had tool reaction saw this song and it brought a tear to my eye I got so hyped swear to god haha
Now i know why it gave me the creeps. thanks!

Pet?
@@skinlessskeleton It's a line taken from Pet expanded into a whole song on Emotive. (I prefer Pet)
Tool taps in to a primordial aspect. Tribal, raw and primal yet transcendent and introspective.
This was the first song on this album, their first full album in 5 years. This is how we were introduced to what was in store.
One of my favorite Tool songs as it is so well rounded in every facet. From lyrics to the transitions the melodies, everything. So fucking good.
This is a smart man. Graduate from West Point. Sings in several bands, owns and runs wineries , martial arts gyms, Yoga studios. etc etc.
its funny, because i used to be a HipHop listener than dipped my toes into nu-metal with Korn en Deftones, then following Deftones and witnessing their growth while discovering bands like Tool just gave me the same feeling....HipHop didn't hit me the same as before, it almost feels empty in a way. Still, i dont mind a banger every now and then, but men, musically this music has so much more to offer.
I was lucky enough to see them play this whole album like 2 days after it came out, I celebrate their entire catalogue, but this album is still my favorite. Definitely gotta react to the many gems on this album.
It's our generations Dark Side imo
This is one of my personal favorite TOOL songs. So much of their stuff is like a spiritual and or out of body experience.
Dude the Grudge is a top 5 Tool song for me!
i was going to say the same, then i had a thought, all the other great tracks , so hard to say that with tool, defo top 7, no, 8 a feck, 10 :-) i like it allot lol
All their songs are top 5
1. The Grudge
2. Third Eye
3. 10,000 Days/Wings for Marie
4. Pushit (live version)
5. Pneuma
6. Rosetta Stoned
Tool Army Here, check out TOOL (YOU LIED) this is a cover of a song done by a group called PEACH which was the band Justin was in before coming to TOOL, and it also showcases another kind of voice from Maynard it sounds sort of angelic, and the music is of course off the chain.

Jason Magistro I’ll co-sign this.
Especially the salival live versions
Pushit is a must, but it's still better to hear the album version first. The Salival version is still better in the context of the original version, which I'm sure most people heard first anyways.
Yes dude, Pushit Salival version. Essential listening.
Preach Jason. He has done the Salival version of Push It.
10:21 in Maynard releases The Grudge for all of us with that primal scream. I'm not a big fan of screaming in music but it's brilliantly timed/executed/necessary for this piece (notice I didn't say song as TOOL doesn't make songs.)

at 5:44 "OH!" I feel that every time I hear this song. That backbeat kicks in and the song just runs away.
Hey J/J
Loving your reactions and just the pure joy and excitement you show while discovering new music.
Basically the same thing about holding onto grudges, letting negativity control you can change you
Yes you did hear him scream for 20 seconds straight. And he nails that live every time.
Seeing this live is fucking amazing.

This song keeps your on the edge of you seat. Great song and great reaction
Excellent. You starting with The Grudge.

Saw them live during the Lateralus tour. Was a mind blowing experience.
I love seeing people react to tool, I can never again have it, so I guess I'll just be Vicarious.
Ha!
I love this one, react to descending if you havent yet.
Best song on the new album. Probably an unpopular opinion.
@@bdizzle2144 I agree, its my fav.
The music of Tool hits your soul like no other if you allow it. Their live shows are an incredibly spiritual experience and definitely worth seeing at least once in your life.
One of MJK’s most iconic screams, right there. May I suggest Ticks and Leeches for your next Lateralus track?

Holding grudges has been likened to taking poison in the hopes the other person will die.
your reaction for the scream at the end and the outro is priceless! great song and a beast to play accurately as a drummer. once you get done with these tool songs, you should see how they all relate and fit w/ each other in the album. the members of tool are geniuses.

I love that you said that you don't listen to rap the same way and this music has changed you. Each genre has its purposes and appeal. Simplistic forms of music tap into basic primal urges and desires while more intricate and technical styles also touch on those subjects at times, they make you look at them differently.

I really love seeing other people's reactions to things like this. It allows me to see other interpretations of them. It also points out things that I missed and makes me listen it a new way.
I used to be confused about the Saturn part too, but it's an astrology thing;
"The Saturn Return is when the planet Saturn comes back to meet your natal Saturn.
It might ask you to accept a new heaviness, a new maturity, a new sense of responsibility."
I'm not into astrology myself, but I appreciate the metaphor of a time/ challenge to grow.
