The problem with this song has always been the fact that it's too short. I wish ol' Waymore would have added a few more verses before he checked out. I can remember being 18 years old, riding around with my friend and "rewinding" this song over and over and screaming it to the top of our lungs. Classic.

Usually songs have a progressive storyline, in the basic sense, but this song has no singular 'train of thought'. This is what I think, anyway.
It's probably because the lyrics are lifted from disparate songs. Two verses come from "Keep it Clean" by Charley Jordan: If you want to go to heaven when you D-I-E... and the get the rabbit out the L-O-G... and then the line about having his name on his shirt seems to be repurposed from "Blue Yodel No. 9" by Jimmie Rodgers. Both of those songs were written before he was born. I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't find the rest of the lyrics in another song. He basically pasted a bunch of songs together over a two chord pattern. I like his music. My band covers his songs (including this one) but I wouldn't call this pure genius.

Hi Jim, I really like the way you put it, this was a good video because of the close up intimacy between husband and wife talking about a song, both of them writers of classic songs. I’ve always loved this song from the early 1970s Waymores Blues.
This performance ALWAYS gives me chills
On the longest days this song does pop up and I can't help but to giggle..
I caught myself the other day saying I don't know what you're talking about ohhhh I just giggled

My best friend and I used to listen to this when we were in high school. 1977. He's gone now, heart breaking shit, but still good as ever. I know he is still loving it. RIP BROTHER
I like to think my dad was listening to this back in the day, while wrenching on his race cars. Wish I could have known him longer. My dad was awesome, a real OG hot-rodder. He owned the local drag strip in Huntsville, AL.
