A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle went to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed $12.3 million.
In all, Jesus Christ Superstar has grossed over $205 million and has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world! - เพลง
Judas: "things matter more than your hair."
And Jesus took that personally. To be fair, that hair is fabulous.
best JCS comment EVER 💜💚
well done, Brian💜
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The crucifixion was ultimately brought upon by Judas' jealousy of Jesus luscious hairy noggin
true
How my hair look, Judas?
jesus' facial expressions are priceless. when judas started to talk again he was like 'not this again'
My favorite part is Jesus’s cargo pants lol
💟
He apparently had a lot to carry, right?
Murr, Frank and chance .
Same
I love Judas's facial expression when Mary touches his face. He just doesn't know how to react.
'Cause, you know... he's gay.
2:17 😃😃
He's so confused by the tenderness.
Also, the other apostles had to leave the women in their lives to be here. Peter, for example, had a wife he abandoned. Nothing makes you realize you're in a cult quicker than seeing the cult leader enjoy pleasures and privileges that the followers aren't allowed to have.
This is the gayest version of The Passion I've ever seen
Renee Castle won my heart with this amazing performance. The way Renee Castle directs indignation and empathy with great range of soul Yvonne Ellman is the gold standard. Renee Castle gives this role a vulnerable and spiritual depth.
Without the tender moment between Jesus and Judas that the 70s version has Jesus just comes off as kind of a self-centered diva during "you'll be so sorry when I'm gone"
That's the point though: "Jesus Christ Superstar" They used to be about helping the poor, but now it's just about Jesus.
Well yeah. If you interpret the story in the Bible to be true. Then this was a guy that knew the leading days to his demise was going to filled with pain and anguish. And knowing that Judas would turn on him and not being able to stop any of this from happening because it was God's plan to reopen the gates of heaven to humanity, then its easier to understand that Jesus wasn't exactly himself at this point.
Mary's voice is beautiful
Amen to that !! Mesmerizing !!
and her expressions, wonderful performance
She sings like an angel
Sleeping in one big room with your twelve besties gets awkward as soon as you bring a girl home...
Jesus died a virgin.
@@aclark903 you weren't there
@@thecgbrothefirst5476 The disciples were. They wrote the #Gospels.
@@aclark903 I know, I not stupid, but how do you know that they didn't have a big orgy and agree not to talk about it
@@aclark903 excuse you watch your mouth Jesus died for us be nice and don't you dare call me missy
I didn't expect Quentin Tarantino playing Judas!
+Michał Nowak Don't fuckin' "Judas" me, Jesus!
[crickets]
I'll show myself out.
Jajajaja You re right . Es decir tenés razón
That Is Not Quentin Tarantino That’s Jerome Pardon French/British Actor Who Plays Judas In The Movie
THAT'S who he looks like.
Lol.
Nah he's Flea from RHCP
This version is beautiful! Mary's voice is so calming and soothing and Judas's facial expressions are spot on! However it is a little slow, so I tried it a speed 1.25x and it sounds like the original version! It is fantastic I love itt!!!
I like it slower, it lasts longer.
1.25 is the perfect speed. Thanks
You like my musical i play Mary on Jesus Christ superstar
Just my opinion, but nobody's done this better than Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson in the 1973 film. That moment when Jesus warns Judas he'll be sorry when he's gone... that lingering stare at each other, fear and grief... It's never been bettered.
Agreed! And the way they grabbed each other’s hand at the end of the song was awesome. Showed they cared deeply about each other. Jesus just sounds pissed at Judas in this version.
There's a subtext the movie was able to achieve through imagery that was rather impressive at the time. But this movie doesn't get it.
yes that moment is stunning when Judas realises Jesus knows the tragedy of what's coming, its immense
Trevor White and Chrissie Hammond in the 1976 Sydney production were tough to beat. The late. wonderful Jon English as Judas.
Wow Judas went high. That's amazing!!!! I just love Jerome!
I probably have not seen many versions but this is the first time i saw Mary sing the song as well to Judas..and i kinda like that
:3
You should see the original one, is much more intense, and Mary also sings directly to Judas
In the -73 movie she also does that.
Renee Castle the most sweet voice ever.
"There will always be poor, so why ever bother helping any of them." -Jesus Christ Superstar.
Nada. He said getting ointment a problem? When we didnt have the resources. In fact id reword it, in my version.
I think hes feeling a bit lost knowing hes going to die soon and is telling them to make the most of him as opposed to the poor who will be always there to help
Amen!
Gospel words
"The poor are always with us" is directly from the gospels.
Jesus is such a drama queen on this show.
No one:
Literally no one:
Jesus: *ONE DAY I'LL BE GONE AND YOU WILL MISS ME*
Kkkkk I think the same
On his defense Judas was being that guy of "How can you enjoy this when there are kids starving in Africa?".
@@ramonserna8089 like my mom used to do when I didn't want to eat
So that's where everyone's mother got it from!
because it's gay show
Not gonna lie. Judas kind of has a freaking point.
That’s kind of the point of the musical.
So does Jesus. That's why the Gospel is not about solving world hunger. It's about how God is with us, even in the midst of hunger, war, disease, etc.
In the Bible there's different interpretations, the most anti-Judas ones are that he's greedy and would want to keep the money for himself, others are that it's Jesus knowing that he's not got long and just wants to make the most of the time he has left before Passion week and a horrible death,
@@elijahculper5522 It's true JCS tends to treat Judas overly sympathetically.
@@aclark903 Judas is the point of view character in the musical. He gets the opening number and the finale. His choices drive the plot forward and his emotional state sets the tone for the show-even when he’s not on stage. The information the audience is given always lines up with what Judas knows-even to the point of the show using the Sanhedrin to reiterate Judas’s worries and confirm that he’s right to think Jesus and his followers are inviting danger upon themselves. He’s the character who has the most developed arc. Judas is the main character of JCS. He’s the protagonist. It makes sense that JCS is gonna show Judas in a more positive light than the Bible.
Man she has such a pretty voice
imagine you audition for playing Christ and the director said you are perfect for playing Judas.
Hahahaha
What I love about this version (among many things) is the costume choices. Judas is always wearing red; he's the villain. At least in the Biblical sense. But this story always makes Judas to be sympathetic. Mary, at least in this version (in the 1973 version, she wear orange), wears red. She has turned Jesus away from what he was preaching; away from what Judas wants him to do. She is not the villain, but she is certainly not a hero in this story
They are two people who like Jesus and they both wear red and black. Looks like a direct correlation between these two characters
Any basis in the play for calling Mary Magdalene a bad influence..? Been a while since I saw it, but isn't she just being tender and loving?
Judas: This is so expensive! We could have used it to aid the poor.
JC: Shut up traitor!
Peter: What?
John: What?
James: What?
Jesus only said that cause Judas was being self serving as the corrupt treasurer
@@politereminder6284 this is indeed how it was described in the Bible. However that isn't the way Judas is portrayed in JCS.
@@MetalUndergroundDemo I guess it depends on the version and interpretation. 🤷 The Judas from the JCS movie in the 70s does come across as quite selfish. This one comes off as a pissed off ex lover .
I find that JCS changes perspectives but not the facts of the biblical account. It reorganizes the info, and leaves stuff out to serve the narrative, but it doesn't add much new stuff to the material..
@@politereminder6284 It doesn't add new stuff but it omits enough to change the narrative in a significant way. Judas being portrayed as a sympathetic and tragic figure is one of them. For another example, in the Bible the pharisees are aware of their role in the divine plan, since Caiaphas remarks that Jesus' sacrifice was prophesized by him and that they are not acting of their own accord (John 11:51 and elsewhere in the gospels for example), similarly to judas in JCS.
@@MetalUndergroundDemo Very true. The result is quite blasphemous. It totally changes things by omission
I will say this: His voice wasn't what you want in a Judas, but his acting is on fleek. The attitude he gives Judas is epic.
I love Jesus Christ he's mine he's my friend
One of my favorite versions. I just absolutely love everyone's vocals and they tell the story so well.
I love the instability in the music how the lyrics are relaxing but the music is tense and anxious.
Very much like life.
I like Mary singing to Judas for a moment rather than just singing to Jesus as if he isn't there.
0:30 Simon and Peter just look like Judas's older brothers and I love that😂❤
What kind of "bothers" me is that in the '73 version, Jesus seems conflicted, and sounded like he really loved Judas, like a brother, and was worried about him (all the movie, not only in this scene), and tried to teach him. Even Mary Magdalene seems worried about him too.
Here looks like Jesus is obsessed with her, and kind of bored about Judas and his actitud, like they were strangers or tired of each other.
For me, you have to give a chance to the '73 version too.
1973 version is all the damn everything.
The prettiest Mary Magdalene portrayer.
Tough call they've always used attractive women for the part, in the 1992 Australian adaptation they had Kate Ceberano as Mary quite attractive back in the day
Glenn will always be my favorite
I like Jesus.
Mary sings this beautifully
This is a lot more sexualized than when I saw it in London in the early 70s.
I think it's more sexualized than the tone of the music and the lyrics itself
I don't think the word "sexualized" is the right word. It's obvious that Mary loves Jesus. But that was also established in "I Don't Know How To Love Him." I think it's because Mary is more touchy in this song. So, more intimate maybe, but not necessarily sexualized. At least, not in a vulgar way. Just my opinion.
I love Jesus Christ superstar I’m a biggest fans
I would love to see this live. Not the original but I like it!
Judas: People who are hungry and starving matters. (there is a lot of suffering in the world, but we can do something about it if we get our priorities straight)
Mary to Jesus: Close your eyes, think of nothing. Let the world turn without you. (see no evil, turn a blind eye, don't take action)
Everyone: Everything is alright, yes, everything is alright (if we say it enough times we may start to believe it)
Not at all the point but yeah sure
I Love Judas (the actor of course) he is Just so awesome. 😍🥰
I'm loving Jesus's facial expressions!
Haha ....I love how they have cross tattoos!
That's not funny iris fishman don't you dare call me missy
Superb vocal!
BRAVO!!!
MASTERPIECE!!!!
Love it!!!
The best part of this adaptation is, in my opinion, Mary Magdalene.
True but Judas ain't bad.
I love this... 🥺😢 2021 - The end 💔
Always love that song
Excellent picture
3:19
ngl that was a pretty epic high note
Один из лучших вариантов рок-оперы. Просто шедеврально!!!
One of the best rock operas ever. Simply masterpiece!!! Google Translate.
Great cast great version
Hahaha good joke
I love this musical.
I laughed at Jesus' face at 2:06 he's like "nah imma punch you right now"
0:30 through the clip at 0:40 is such a quick insight into Judas' relationship with Peter and Simon in this version
Such a beautiful performance... everyone is so epically beautiful in this film...
mooi
Estos dialogos entre Judas y Jesus parecen las peleas de una pareja Gay jajaja
2:42 Judas complaining to two of the other disciples. They're like "It's O.K. man, we're still your friends".
I absolutely LOVE everything about this version. However, it does feel a bit like Beverly Hills 90210 meets Jesus
Myri, Judah, and Yeshua absolutely have a weird 3 way relationship going on
I sleeping in big room and i heard a vozese of haven spoke my name in my hear for one night
All the disciples and Jesus treated Judas like shit and you feel so bad for him and want him to betray them all! You shouldn't make Jesus the villain or Judas the evil man. This version made the movie seem like everyone hates each other!
+Harper Craven By today's standards, the amalgamation that is Jesus would be a cult leader.
+Taeneri Bladestorm okay but that shouldn't make him a stuck up asshole or make judas the bad guy!!! This is just my interpretation. I want to direct a production of this someday
Harper Craven
I respect your rights to your own opinion, but a mortal man who is about to have all his fame and power stripped away, then be executed, I think he is taking it all rather well. I feel this is a more realistic version of events, he knows he is screwed, but a tiny part of him is still trying to deny it and weasel out of death.
Everything alright
Am I the only how noticed that Simon already has a cross tattoo.... weird.
It was the method of execution at the time.

I love it I love the black women I watch it every day
Huh?!

You will be lost...🤔
And be sorry...😰
When I'm gone!!!🧙
What I don’t like about this version is that it makes it look as if Mary loved Jesus, and not in the “loving god” kind of way. Honestly it’s kind of creepy
Then look again at "I Don't Know How To Love Him" in any version. It's always been a part of this musical, in any version, that Mary loved Jesus in a romantic way. It also reminds us that Jesus was all God and all man. He faced every temptation, including sexual ones.
Judas Iscariot did complain about the oil that Mary Magdalene was using was so expensive and that he said in the book of Luke " Why are you wasting money on this expensive oil , that should be used to be given to the poor " but Jesus did replied to Judas " why do you bother her , the poor will always have you , but i won't always be here with you " he meant that Mary Magdalene anointed Jesus's head and feet with oil to prepare him for burial . which meant that Jesus Christ was going to die not only for their sins but for the sins of mankind
Anyone else just cracking up over the guy at 3:36??
Everyone has beautiful voices but I prefer the original. It’s what I grew up on.
I watched this at school
Jesus Like:
U wanna make Drama, Judas?
THIS ist how it's done.😅😁😂😜🤪

I think Judas was spot ON...... just sayin'.... :'( BUT I adore Mary Magdalene.... Say NO more.

Why that version is more slow than the original JCSS?
fun said
I'd say this is a close second to the original with respect to Mary
I like this tempo of the song. It fit the emotion. Even if it felt a bit too sexy
Lol why is there a swastika at the wall in the background?
Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,
Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. JOHN 12
Jesus has a point about the poor.
