      Yes.
Except they had to make him black.
      Didn't they?
To infer that black is bad.
      And Jesus white.
      As in white is good.
      Neither are correct.
Where as if he did exist.
      He would of been brown.
It's quite despicable the way they predictively program the masses.
      This way.
      Amazing performance though.

It's not just that, in this moment Jesus is telling Judas that he is destined to die as part of god's plan. You can see the profound understanding on Judas's face as Judas also understands his grim role in this divine play. His expression conveys sadness, adoration, and awe at the almighty all at once while Jesus is stoic and statuesque, just as we're used to seeing him in paintings after his death. All of this is meant to convey to the audience that both Jesus and Judas have vague understandings that their lives are not their own, but part of something bigger that will kill both of them for the greater good.

Agree. I grew up listening to this soundtrack and always listen to it fully a few times a year but, weirdly, have never seen the movie itself. Watching this scene between the actors adds a whole new layer and meaning to what's being sung. When Jesus says, "... Think while you still have me. Move while you still see me. You'll be lost and you'll be sorry when I'm gone ..." the look on Judas' face reveals a dawning realization that Jesus knows something he doesn't -- that this is all coming to an end very soon.

@@boxelder9147 It sounds like you understand his response quite well... maybe you just don't like it? Or maybe you aren't comfortable with the idea that Jesus would express that kind of sentiment? I'm not sure he was saying "be thankful you're not poor', because they *are* poor, and that's his point: they don't have the resources to 'save the poor', no one does because poverty is an eternal part of the balance and structure of everything, and when you've got the son of God hanging out with you for a short while, maybe your thoughts and movements should be focused on gratitude and mindfulness rather than pipe dreams and the cost of ointment. That's my take, at least!

The thing that I really like about Ted Neeley's response to Judas (Carl Anderson) is that he was teaching and he remained compassionate. Every revival I've seen with this song has Jesus getting sort of annoyed or angry and I don't think that's him.

You make a great point. As much as I love the Arena Tour of this show (with Ben Forster, Mel C, Tim Minchin...) --- I noticed exactly what you said... Jesus became very annoyed with Judas during this song, and never showed the compassion that is seen here -- which is very touching and effective. Nevertheless, I think Ben and Mel C did incredible jobs in that production, compared to the numerous revivals of the original that followed.

It seems like some fall into wealth, live long enough, then inherit it while others are born into homes that rent from slum 'lords'. I do believe Jesus(Yeshua) punched through this dimension to tell us the GOOD news that we truly are spiritual immortal beings trapped in this material spiderweb. Pistons only have power when they are going down. When you are in the gutter, the stars can be bright. Hitch your wagon to one of them! The tree of Life was in the Garden of Eden before and after Eve came along. God ONLY forbid Adam from eating the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Not the Tree of Life. You are already eternal, my good spirit. The overwhelming pulse from the Creator God is Love. Love. You are loved. You are loved. You will never end as Adam obviously sampled all the trees he was allowed. The Roman Ceasar suppressed this knowledge. This is what insecure tyrants do throughout history. This song is written in 5/8, which is the same time signature as the famous jazz piece, "Take 5". It is one of the most difficult meters in music, and yet this was masterfully written so that it just flows seamlessly for the vocalists.

I think it's beyond Christ *knowing* - it's Judas' *_fate_* to play the role he must.
I feel, as others do, that this was Christ _compelling_ Judas to do what he *must,* and what _only_ he could do. Far from being a betrayer (as he is often portrayed), I see Judas as a *fulfiller* of the prophesies...

Andrew Lloyd Webber's music is inspired. Mary's melody - with lovely chords, mostly major chords - is sweet and in a downward, descending, easing motion. Then Judas's, and Jesus's melodic lines are ascending and aggressive, challenging, the chords in the music, bold and solid - suddenly attacking in the natural minor of the tonic. Feminine, Masculine. Major, Minor. Amazing contrast.

This brings tears to my eyes. From the intensity coming out of the verses of Carl then Ted, balanced out with the calming chorus by Yvonne. How she sings the chorus first to Jesus to calm him then basically repeats the same to Judas trying to calm him as well. Seeing Judas and Jesus clench hands then slowly break apart, its as if they both know their fates have been sealed. Chills. Every. Single. Time. My God. This entire musical is a masterpiece.

One of the great things about JCSS, is that it humanizes all the characters, they don’t include the miracles/supernatural stuff, they focus on a man just trying yo make the world a better place and his followers and the disagreements between them, as well as the complicated political situation at the time with Judea being occupied by the Romans
It just makes it so that everyone, religious or non religious can really appreciate the story which itself is a beautiful and tragic story
