    The best part about this group is the variety of different pitches of voices. Many people would think, straight away without hearing anything else, that a group piece with everyone having the same pitch is how it should be, but I think it sounds much better to have many different pitches in a group, that's why I love this song. It shows off those pitches.

      Lorna Prichard funny, I absolutely love the line ‘Infantile sermons, the multitude drools’ as I think it is much truer to the things they must’ve felt during meetings as this.

      One thing that is interesting is the change to the lyric about Jesus being cool. If that were true, why would they want him dead? I guess that they were jealous of his popularity. The lyric change makes more sense.

The '73 movie has a lot of beardy guys standing on a construction site and rattling the iron, which isn't exactly intimidating. Bruh I’m A Christian and I love this musical partly because it serves as such a great capturing of the emotional human aspects of the Bible. Just look at Gesthemane. Never has Jesus’s inner conflict been captured so well. This musical is innacurate in many ways; but it’s also so moving that it’ll strengthen one’s own faith.

    The thing this version did INFINITELY better than the original was not show the crowd during this scene. The ‘73 version showed the “whole town on its feet” and had about 15 guys standing on the ground. Literally there were about as many people celebrating jesus as there were people on the scaffolding singing about how there “a huge massive crowd”. This version however didn’t show the crowd, just using vocals and props and allowing your imagination to do the rest.

    • @mattkelland3325

      But then do you realise that the 1973 film was actually about a small acting troup performing the musical in the desert. They used whatever set pieces they could find and as for the small crowd that you referred to, we'll at the beginning and end of the film you see the entire cast arriving on a bus wearing their 1973 appropriate clothes.

      I think they cut Then We Are Decided because of what OP said, that Caiaphas in this version seems like he is the one who needs convincing to have Jesus executed and the song is all about how he needs to convince the Pharisees to have him executed

    • @johnblankenhorn9730
      @johnblankenhorn9730 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It sounds to me like he needs convincing until the line (and his far-off stare during) "I see bad things arising." It feels like that's the moment where it suddenly clicks for Caiaphas as to what could happen if they don't remove Jesus. After that the roles reverse, Caiaphas now strong-arms them into supporting killing Jesus. He manhandles them during "fools you have no perception", and "we must crush him completed," while the others give each other a look before singing "must die must die this Jesus must die". At the beginning of the song the others may have simply wanted Jesus arrested or forced underground ("go call the Roman guard").
      I think this song has a very different feel thanks to the lack of "Then We Are Decided" as others have said.

      @@TovKafur The main problem was that Jerome Pradon is (or at least was at the time this was done; his range may have shifted a bit over the years) technically a fairly classic baritenor and both Judas and Jesus are written for firm rock tenor voices. I think I even remember coming across an interview where he said there was no way he'd be able to play Judas in a full 8-show-a-week run because of the strain on his voice. That said, I agree with you on the acting front; his reactions and whatever he's doing, even if it's just in the background, is often better and more interesting to watch than anything else going on in the scene. Personally, I can forgive the pitchy and rough vocals for his acting.

    The original Aana’s singing was so “slimy” and underhanded that everyone needed a shower after he sang. It’s amazing

    love the languid pace of this one, and the bass of two of them is really great. This runs a good twenty seconds more than most other versions. Interestinly enough the tall bass plays caiphus in the arena version from 2020 with tim minchin as judas.

    While the 70s original is still my favorite, I gotta say that I think this one did a better job at incorporating the modern elements into its world, and I'm especially in love with how the place looks like an urban dystopia. Though I still would love to see more natural environments like in the original, as that setting helped the characters and universe feel bigger than just one city

    Although I’m looking forward to seeing the 2018 version with John Legend, and I Loved the original movie from the 70’s. But I never knew about this 2000 version. Looks and sounds fantastic! I’ll be sure to check this version out too!

    Is it weird that I actually prefer the remake because it's so much more over-the-top? Everyone here feels like a Disney villain dressed up as a Hellraiser villain. I love it.

    I really wish that this song, Pilate and Christ, Peters Denial, and the other cut songs were on the 2000 cast recording :'( There must be a full version somewhere!
